NPD September 2012 Sales Results [Up2: Madden, Fixed 3DS Minimum]

What you are showing is the clearing stock of an outdated model. You honestlyt feel Sony is still making this outdated model in their factories and selling it to retailers?
I doubt they are making that model in factories but wouldn't be surprised at all if they are still selling them to retailers.

Wow. The Wii used to sell twice the xbox 360 and PS3 combined. But now it sells 1/2 to 1/4 of what each of those sells. The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.

Well, the Wii was not HD and started pretty cheap. HDTVs caught on and the Wii didn't have much room to drop the price.

I don't think that's the problem at all -- the problem is software support. If the Wii still had GTAV, the next Metal Gear, the next Final Fantasy, Bioshock Infinite, etc. all lined up for it the way PS3/360 do, I'm sure it would be selling quite a bit better.

Sorry man, but that is not the reason Wii stopped selling. Of course the Wii did slow down going in 2009 and 2010, but December 2009 Wii broke the record for best month of all time. The Wii is in a shit state because Nintendo treated it like a shit this year and last year. When Nintendo was the only company supporting the system, what do you think would happen when Nintendo stopped that support? It's honestly shocking the Wii even sells as much as it does. HD has nothing to do with it.

Of course not but what does this mean to customers when the shelves are still filled with old models which probably won't run out for a while. So 249 is the lowest price PS3 available until stock runs out which is what the whole original discussion was about

Presumably one of the reasons why it doesn't have those games is because of the huge difference in power, so he's not all entirely wrong.

I suspect wii u will face similar issues once ps4 and 720 release and are demonstrably more powerful

Really? From what I remember last NPD BBS and DDD pretty much tied, and I thought 358/2 did much better. I don't even remember seeing specific Coded numbers. But yeah, 40k shows a big lack of legs and that the 3DS definitely needs to get out there to a larger audience.

Absolutely. I just want to make it clear that the Wii did not die an early death because it was doomed to it from the day it launched because it was a bad console; it died an early death because it didn't get much software support from third parties, which is absolutely normal. The PS2 also would have died an early death if it got little to no software support in 2003-2006 while the Gamecube and Xbox got the games instead.

It's an unfortunate truth of the marketplace that making a unique, different console is strongly discouraged. I've mentioned this before, but if there are four consoles -- we'll call them A, B, C and D -- and D is very different such that porting is not easy, while A/B/C are all highly similar, D is likely to going to be lose out on many games while A/B/C get lots of multiplatform support.

It creates a strong incentive to avoid unique platform design, and instead remain normalized to avoid the possibility of being the "odd one out." Again, that's unfortunate, as it suppresses hardware innovation, but there it is.

DDD just barely eeked out ahead of BBS. Basically tied though.

358 / 2 days: ~201k

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Eh, not a good second month, but I'd wait the Holidays ( also because it's still a Disney title ) for a better opinion about it's LTD possibilities. Probably, the drop is also due to the fact its NPD debut accounted basically for all the days considered, from the beginning to the end. It's been released on 31st July, not the same day as NSMB2, to say. So, it had much more sales concentrated in the first month than many games. Still, it could have had a better second month.

Creamsugar, could you post Dead or Alive numbers? ( was it considered in this NPD? I don't remember now XD )

That's not correct. Not only are they still selling the $249 160GB PS3, it's the headliner of their PS3 systems page.

Now please, once the cheapest PS3 you can buy in North America costs more than $249.99 we can resume this discussion.

This is such a silly argument, we have no idea how much stock is out there for the $249, so people could be using this argument this time next year if they see one on shelf. Were there not rumours the $269 model drops to $250 soon?

7k > psv > 5k > wii > 2k > 3ds > 1k > psp

They wouldn't be profitable if the target market for the game was the US.

These numbers are horrific, particularly for Vita. FIFA has been noted as one of the titles meant to reverse its sales fortune this fall (along with Madden, NFS, UC3, and CoD). Obviously not a good start. Combined with 3DS sales, it paints a pattern of almost universal rejection of portable sports gaming in the US.

It'll be like this unless EA decides to doing portable versions which are

1) Not just roster updates
2) Some exclusive features possible only on the portable platforms
3) ADDING THE ONLINE FOR THE 3DS VERSION

I don't demand a complete shift of resources from PS360 versions to the others ( 3DS and Vita, Wii is basically dead now), but at least they should TRY.

EDIT: Nothing, you already corrected about FIFA 13 Vita on the other charts.

I don't think anyone is claiming EA made a huge effort, but I think the low sales are more indicative of the state of the platform itself.

Have any of you seen that the 160GB PS3 is hard to find? It is true that the $269 bundle is the only official version on paper right now, but does it matter much whats on the paper only?

The Uncharted 3/Dust 514 bundle is said to be a limited edition, so it will be discontinued some time. There will most likely be a base model (as in no games included) after this.

The whole thing is a bit strange, the way Sony has gone about it. It's not liek the old slim wouldn't sell out if the new one was $249 along side it, there probably wasn't much stock this time of year anyway and the holidays would ensure they all got sold. I'm not sure why they have to make this new model $270 then drop to $250 again a month or so later.

Oddly, the iOS version is mad popular. Nearly 1 million downloads in the first week, IIRC.

Edit: That was probably worldwide though.

I think the idea behind it is to make the $270 bundle look more attractive. Instead of paying $250 for a 160GB, for $20 more you get 90GB more storage and and a free game. That $20 extra means more profit for Sony.

It wont really be a drop from $270 to $250 because there is already a $250 SKU available. The new base model wont include any games like the Uncharted 3 bundle, so this will just replace the old $250 model. That is my take on it at least.

The only infos about the iOS version

It was also a record-setting opening for FIFA Soccer 13 on iOS around the world. FIFA Soccer 13 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad achieved the biggest launch-day performance of any EA iOS game in history, with downloads up 62 percent over last year*. FIFA Soccer 13 also hit No. 1 in Top Paid Games in 55 countries and No. 1 in Top Grossing Games in 24 countries on the App Store^.

I know I'm not that poster, but ... yes. And the percentage growth is also right.

I think that's got to be one of the biggest success stories in a fair while, hasn't it? I suspect in part due to the steam sales and aggressive discounting of the first, too; people wanted in at the outset this time.

How if Borderlands sold 546k in october 2009?

Is all of this taking the PC version into account?

Is that number really surprising? The ad campaign was massive on the level of something usually in the holiday and something that usually would sell much more. I don't think it underperformed, but I don't think T2 expected any less.

Lol Borderlands 2 sold 1.5m, what was it Insominac said about the original art for Overstrike again? Something about people not wanting it, yea clearly bullshit.

We don't really know the 2nd months and beyond for the KH games. We know the games have legs but we dont know where they stabilize.

Its hard to say how it will do, but it has had a decent start considering how theyve been fracturing the fanbase lately.

Portable sports gaming has a problem from the word go... the fact that most people want to play these games with friends, on the couch. You can't do that with portables. It's not the same experience at all. The portable game will always be an inferior version of the game people really want to play.

Insomniac seems to have something of a failure of nerves. For instance, the controversy about the Cole redesign in Infamous 2? The entire thing started because they arbitrarily changed the character to make him look "cool" in the way that was at that time trendy: a Nathan Drake clone. 30 year old youthful faced male with fop of brown hair, a smirk, and a half tuck shirt. People got angry at it not because they evolved Cole's look, but because they shamelessly warped the character to pander to a perceived trend.

Which is why all the defense forcing of Insomniac when people complained missed the point entirely.

The business with Overstrike's art style is just a more spectacular example of what's kind of wrong with them.

It's great that they do listen to players in some ways, such as the changes they made to A Crack in Time. By the same token the seem to lack the ability to stick to a vision.

Their vision is what is trendy today

Infamous is SuckerPunch, not Insomniac :) There really isnt much of a difference between Cole in Infamous 1 and 2 by the way. I recently beat Infamous 2 and i didnt notice anything particularly difference compared to Cole in Infamous 1.
