EDGE: Why "increasingly frustrated journalists" need MS to reveal its new Xbox

We are frustrated as well, but I want them to make a good show so all we can do is wait. I would like to see an official announcement for the event very soon though, so they can acknowledge it exists, game creators can talk about it, and hype us up a bit.

^ that time will come, there are several months more before the supposed holiday release of the consoles. they can talk all they want at that time, what matters now is MS getting ready and confident enough to show why should we buy their console.

I have a lot of concerns about the next Xbox, but sympathy for the poor journalists who thrive off tech reveals and blockbuster previews and exclusive interviews just aren't among them.

I would be perfectly happy if they did not exist, so I do not mind if they are starving. My distaste for the hype machine spans virtually all tech fields, from hype surrounding Apple's next iPhone to reveals of new televisions to the reveals of new gaming machines.

This is how tech journalism deserves to be treated:

We've been given no reason to think otherwise. Perhaps if some of the non-disastrous details were to leak out instead of the disastrous ones, we'd have just cause to think otherwise.

There are non-disastrous details, right? Ones that don't make it seem inferior to the PS4 in every way fathomable? Those exist, right?

Yep id fucking kill for a positive rumour right about now.

Neil Long said:
What is the next Xbox? It’s a restrictive, always-on console bloated with DRM and flooded with ads. It doesn’t want you to play second-hand games on it. It’ll break the moment your internet connection has the slightest wobble. It’ll be a trojan horse – designed to seduce the games playing public into buying one before taking over their living rooms, pushing videogames into the background in favour of gaudy mainstream entertainment.

The truth? 360’s successor will be Microsoft’s own connected entertainment hub – in and of itself, that’s no bad thing. Microsoft will never completely abandon the core games-playing audience it has built its Xbox business upon; the next console will be powerful, and play host to excellent, big-budget blockbuster releases. Its online services will mark a more aggressive push into the broader entertainment market. The next Xbox will be a formidable piece of hardware, and a worthy competitor to Sony’s PS4.

So, Long is now disavowing his own publication's reporting? Seems to be what his wording implies.

If the rumors are false, Microsift can wait all they want. The rumors won't matter if the announcement clears the air.

They need to fucking blow socks off at that revel, after the shit talking by their own staff like major nelson and billy then it has to answer all question day one and leave nothing on the table.

'Journalists' are annoyed because they are probably privy to one or two things they are not allowed to repeat and likely too they are noticing over PAX/GDC their supposed 'mates' aren't telling them anything over a social drink - almost like their professionals or something.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't think Xbox will be 2013. Can't prove me wrong ;)

What's changed? You didn't know dick about it then, you don't know dick about it now.

Then: Assumed it would be basically a 360 but more powerful, and then some silly gimmicky social shit I never touched.

Now: Forced Kinect. Forced Online. Can't resell my games when I'm done with them so I'd literally have to throw them in the trash.

Another month in which editorials like this will be written by increasingly frustrated journalists who just want this ludicrous shadow-chasing to stop. The next Xbox exists, and it’s not the disaster the internet thinks it is – Microsoft just needs to show it to us to make all this go away.

OR maybe these "journalists" could get some integrity and stop writing articles to just get site hits? Everyone is quick to blame MS for not revealing because Sony choose to reveal early. MS is totally in a shit position right now. They had a marketing plan...and had it not been for the twitter blow up of Adam Orth I have no doubts MS could have carried through with their plan. But given the blow up and the mob mentality of the internet everyone is jumping to conclusions and acting like the world ended. Now MS is putting some distance between their announcement and the blow up. You thought they were on lock down before? I am sure MS sent an internal death threat to all employees to shut the F up after this all went down. Not saying its related but I found it odd there was no major nelson show this week. I don't recall him saying they were taking 2 weeks off.

Its funny cause I like this to sports a bit. You see a similar mob mentality when sports teams win the championship... a few idiots start breaking stuff and suddenly every moron in the streets thinks its cool to trash everything. They go hog wild in the streets for a solid night... The police more or less stand back and just make sure nothing truly detrimental happens like killings... the monitor and try not to incite any more rage... things begin to die down...the police move in and mop up the mess. MS seems to be doing the same thing... let the rage die down....they will then come in and try and clean/clear things up. Damage certainly has been done though.

I don't think Microsoft should announce any news out of obligation to reporters.

I think they should do it for damage control now. The fact they aren't is worrying. Most of the rumors spreading is very damaging and coming so close to E3 it could be dead in the water if the Always Online rumor proves to be true. It kills their console out of the gate.

Would a simple 'No it isn't always online/you can play used games' kill them?

Their silence indicates to me that they think they're holding a winning hand. And that they believe the media impact of a full reveal of the machine and its associated capabilities will be more effective than Sony's carefully measured information release.

I don't think they really give a shit if the media is getting frustrated. As long as developers/media partners have the info they need to develop their products, then everything else is gravy.

Time will tell however.

Ding ding ding!

Everyone else has shown their hands and the river card is about to be played, yet MS is still holding on to it's cards, show us now damn it!! "River card to be played on May 21, 2013".

Dozens of rumors suggesting the same things?. We knew most of the PS4 things before it was revealed.

It's a rumor. Should be taken with a grain of salt until it's confirmed. Like I stated before no one but a privileged few know what is what. If you are basing purchasing decisions on rumors the jokes on you.

I really think that many news are going to be confirmations of the many bad rumors. In that sense, I think delaying is a big mistake. If they think people are going to be excited about always on-line, no matter the (only in US) services they provide with it then they are just dead wrong. If none of that is true, and the news are all great, then they can wait a month or two.

Just don't literally put up a Circus to announce the damn thing.

This just proves how MS needs a change, starting by it's main CEO....it's like a dinosaur runned company...

Man...going by the constant calls for dudes to get fired, it would suck working for some of you guys...or hell if you guys were shareholders.

errbody fired.

My god, the nonsense coming out of some posts. "I wanted an xbox now I don't"..because they didn't announce it yet? Really?

Pretty much, that's what the internet is for, we'll probably find out details through leaks anyways.

Its not just some rumour out of thin air though, its being backed up time and time again. Look at the ps4 revel we pretty much knew nearly every single detail bar the 8 gig of ram.

How is not announcing it bad management? I thought the 360 was announced in the same timeframe as what is happening now with Durango?
That's true, but they also weren't dead last in doing so last time.

I'm not suggesting that makes it bad management, but that does account for the impatience at this point.

An article about nothing and how it sucks to have nothing and, somehow, things suck more when people fill that nothing with stupid where it didn't exist or even have a reason to?

The entire point is that with no other info due to Microsoft's silence this is the only info people have to react to. It is a bunch of negative publicity that could either be entirely denied by Microsoft if it is false or at least messaged better if true. They just need to say something.

6 months ago I would have been excited to see the new xbox revealed and been ecstatic to buy 1 day 1.

Now I doubt I'd even watch the event and I doubt I'll ever own one.

Why wouldn't you watch the reveal? It should confirm/deny whatever rumors have made you not want to buy one.

Not even sure why people are up in arms.
If Microsoft wants to fuck up badly, let them.

Give Sega a chance to sneak back into the game. lol

It really aint that big of a deal. Once its announced it'll be plastered all over the news sites just like the PS4 was. Only people making a big deal of this are the ones who are obsessing over any tidbit of info they can get.

The average consumer doesn't care about always online, the potential lack of GDDR5 or no BC. its only the GAF crowd who's going crazy over shit like this.

MS really should say something soon. Even if a lot of the rumors end up being false, they've been out there for a while, and MS has nothing to say to discredit them. It's forming a bad public opinion on the console.

MS does not need to rush anything just to appease these gaming terrorists.

At the moment, we're approaching Windows 8 levels of anti-hype, and Microsoft has a dreadful record at combating anti-hype.

It's far simpler than that.
They want to shit out system wars click bait articles non stop. They can't do that until both systems are revealed.

Cause: Effect

Can't play used games: 'true'

Always online was brought up: and QUICKLY shot down.

New Controller: 'true'

My guess is the reason they are waiting so long is for full on damage control the second always online is announced.

I can imagine as a journalist getting blasted daily from readers if they have any new information on the Durango gets old really quick. It will set the internet on fore like the PS4 when it was announced but it will also get rid of the majority of the rumor threads and comments which are irritating on both sides.

If its not a disaster as the Internet thinks it is, Edges reports on the system didnt indicate otherwise to me personally.

For Microsoft, I just hope they have invested in new, compelling ip

At this point regarding Durango:

Why would I want to buy one?

Since it doesn't officially exist, have anything other than a codename, no release date or price point, I'm not sure anyone could tell you unless you like product recommendations based on speculation and conjuncture.

I'm irritated with it too. We don't live in the age of 'wait and see' anymore. It's 2013, not 2005. People like information. Hell, GTA info is driving me crazy but it is what it is.

No matter how false/true rumors are, the stuff flying around now causes me to be reluctant and only tarnishes a generally positive image that I have of them.

All we can do is wait, but the longer they wait the MORE they will have to offer to win me over. I imagine I am the last person they are interested in though with the recent focus on Kinect.

Yup the 360 was announced in May of 05. Some people have short memories it seems.

I remember. I also have realized that the landscape has changed regarding information. Twitter wasn't founded yet, Youtube wasn't even remotely what it is, and Facebook I think was still only for college emails. Things have changed and people are a lot more connected. And there was probably a fraction of the gaming blogs/sites we have now, but that's something I can't find any information on.

I mean, I get it, they love 'dem secrets. But holy shit it if isn't getting annoying for enthusiasts. It's obvious there is a market for this information as a single twitter conversation of about 4 statements turned into a huge media happening. It honestly feels like a Wal-mart door just before opening for Black Friday.

And those were rumors until confirmed. Even if the rumors are 100% accurate, they are not accurate until confirmed. So I don't see why there is such a rush to base what you are going to do on an unconfirmed rumor. They very well could be 100% accurate, but we do not know, so it is best to reserve judgment. Then again this is Neogaf, so I wouldn't expect anything less out of some posters.

Well if it is true then the negative press will follow even more so, if none of this is true then MS comes out looking good. Just have to wait. Either way people are buzzing about the machine.
