Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

So whats the guarantee that majority of publishers won't restrict me from letting my friend borrow it? Or letting me sell the game if I found it boring/don't like it?

But why would they do this? Publishers and Developers have driven the DRM issue because they want a slice of a massive market. Publishers Blocking 2nd hand sales makes no sense whatsoever.

Instead of getting a small cut of a used game, they get a big cut of a new game.

There has to be something we're missing here. Because if all they're offering in return is the ability to play your games without needing the disk, they've fucked this up badly.

And this is coming from someone who uses a plethora of MS services and products, both subscription based and not.

Forgetting all the other onerous shit, any kind of required internet check-in means you don't own your games anymore. You're just renting them from the publishers for 6 years or so and then when the authentication servers get taken offline, you're shit out of luck.

Fuck Microsoft and the publishers pushing this shit. If Sony follows suit, I'll happily switch to being a PC only gamer.

"With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."

I thought you might be a able to lend a game to a friend for a day, but they thought of that too. It looks like you can give a "friend" a copy once?

"Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

"Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once."

Unfortunately all my friends are on PC/PS3 right now.

Doesn't this pretty much take Gamestop and all the mom-and-pop stores out of the equation?

Awesome. haha

It's worse than I expected. I guess I naively thought they might loosen up on the rules after the uproar, but this announcement today is a clear statement they are proceeding just as planned.

Amazing.

The best part is they are expecting people to pay anywhere from $299-$500 for a device with that many restrictions.

It reminds me of the old Divx discs that Circuit City tried selling at one point. You would pay $4 (very cheap back then) for a DVD which was watchable for 48 hours. After that, the disc wouldn't play. If you wanted to play it again, it would have to dial up the Divx servers and then you would be charged again.

Divx was a total flop and I can only hope that Xbox One suffers the same fate. Anyone that supports and buys this draconian, anti-consumer, marketing guinea pig of a device is just a plain fool.

I'm sorry, but I buy used games and this isn't going to work. There are tons of games that I don't play until months after release and I can pick up for $10. I bought Demon's Souls a few years ago for $7. With this going on, it looks like that will not happen again.

I like the family shit. Now me and my son don't have to buy two copies of CoD to play online. Good shit.

Also, hooray to day one DD. Will never buy another disc.

There is no way in hell MS is going to allow two (or more) people to play the same game simultaneously with one disc.

So have people put two and two together yet... As bad as this is, wait until you see the real writing on the wall. Live will be REQUIRED with this console.

People are okay with this? Damn, maybe that was MS' plan all along. Condition people to expect something REALLY FUCKIN BAD, and only get something FUCKIN BAD, so it's not as awful by comparison.

Sony should've announced the PS3 at $999, then said "We've listened to the complaints and we're lowering the price to $599. See, it could've been even worse!"

This doesn't feel a whole lot more restrictive than Steam. And I love steam. /shrug

In fact, if I had to pick one route or the other I'd like this. I often travel out of state to family/friends and having full access to my game library there is kinda convenient for me.

This isn't for the sake of 'defending MS', I just decided after years of Steam use that I prefer having an account with all my games that I can access all over more than a library discs.

Probably just me though.

I might even not bother watching the press conference now. The paid for cheering and clapping will probably lead to me destroying my monitor.

That and the fact that there's now literally nothing they could do to get me back.

They've confirmed there is no online requirement.

They say it clearly on their page. You have to connect every 24 hours. But it's okay, you can still watch tv.

You can't be serious right? :p 24 hours checks vs offline indefinitely? None of these options they are proposing serve as any benefit for the customer, it's all benefits to the publisher.

I've been gaming on Xbox for over a decade. Been a paying Live member for what, 8 years? I've bought and played all multiplatforms games on 360 and it is quite possibly the best hardware I have owned.

But I simply cannot buy the Xbox One. I am a collector at heart. I collect games, like I collect movie props. The idea that I will lose all my purchases when MS decide to stop supporting the One is quite frankly disgusting to me.

It's something I quite never thought would happen for a major game company like this. I would even bend to the used games restrictions, but the online check-in is the ultimate dealbreaker.

....So it's even worse then before? I can only trade in my game to authorized retailers only, which we already knew, but there is a chance publishers wont let me trade it in at all? Lol. They better price these games at $40 or fuck off.

On a closer look, this actually seems pretty fucked up. Also, are they not even requiring fees off chosen trade-in retailers? If so, then what is the fucking point. I don't get it.

The family thing sounded pretty good but then i noticed

but maybe thats parsing it a little too closely

Yeah this needs clarification too. I have a feeling all the games are linked to a single account, and only one person can play at a given time or smthn.

There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

This is the most disgusting, pathetic garbage I've ever seen.

Then you haven't seen much, if that's the worst thing in life you've seen. It is needlessly convoluted for sure and I don't like most of what they're doing, but it is almost certain that Sony will have some similar news to share in the future.

i buy 2 consoles for each system for me and my wife... is the family sharing enabled for both consoles? (like buy 1 game, share between 2 consoles?)

I think we've just found out why the Wii U isnt getting any third party support. This is a deal struck by publishers with both Microsoft and Sony. There is absolutely no way a publisher is going to release a non DRM game on one console and not the other. We might as well just get used to this.

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then it is stuck with them.

In the context it's written it doesn't say they would be stuck with the game, just that you can loan it to them only once.

It's still shitty but...
