Day never. Have both consoles this gen but will probably get a wiiu/pc combo if sony follows suit. Really was hoping to get ps4 day one and xbone down the line but I can't support a company with such a disconnect with consumers. If that includes sony as well, then...um...welp...

Jaffe's already coming up with strategies:

Funny, I was just going to post this exact same thought but when it hit me, it just seemed that it would be awful and abusive. Exact opposite reaction that Jaffe had, of course.

I could also see publishers restricting sales and used game credit for a specific title after a couple years, too. EA / gameatop isn't going to want to deal with hundreds of thousands of old madden licenses in their database.

Need further clarification on this:

"The Xbox One also lets users give disc-based titles to friends by transferring the game's license, as long as the person has been on the user's Xbox Live friends list for at least 30 days; each game can only be given in this fashion once"

Does this reset for the new license holder you give your disc away to so that they can transfer to someone else?

The "family" statement is very carefully worded. I bet it means that 10 consoles can access one account, but won't be able to play a shared game at the same time.

Yes, it sounds like only one person you shared it with can play it at the same time as you, not all 10.

With all these rules, sharing quotas and online checks, one simple question;

What happens if your console breaks? All of your pre-registered games are then subject to hourly online checks instead of 24 hours on your replacement machine?

Im eagerly waiting what Francis has to say about this on youtube. He'll probably need an ambulance right at his door while recording.

Publishers will surely be fair to the consumers with sales and not create fees out of false pretenses! Also this will totally end that evil GameStop that the publishers are totally enemies with and never partner up at all for promotions right? Right? Guys?

Amazing how Microsoft can flat out state they are taking your rights away but word it in a friendly manner and you have people cheering them on in this thread.

LISTEN, PEOPLE, TO THIS!

Also, what if Live servers are down? Your internet doesn't matter a shit if the problem is at MS's end!

Agreed, I don't think I could ever willingly pay full $60+ price for a game with this restriction (on both ends) and the possibility of it being useless at any time let alone if I want to play say a launch game sometime after that generation has ended which I've pretty much done in the passed on all of my consoles, particularly back in the SNES, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, PS1 and PS2 eras.

This pretty much reads like they'll block the resale of the game until sales have dried up and then they'll allow it.

If that's the case, I wonder what the publishers are thinking, 2-3 months, or more like blocking Fifa 14 resale until Fifa 15 is out, hoping you'd then use that money towards the next one.

Maybe I'm just being cynical.

No, you're just being realistic. That's too good for pubs to pass up.

Imagine the lines at Gamestop the day after the "sell back" deadline passes.

If these idiots will really let you game share with 10 people then they are...well...idiots.

I can see groups of 10 forming now. You can then get all new release games for $6 each.

I really don't get that part either. Developers would fuckin revolt if that is the case. They would slash sales of a title potentially by 10 fold! What is the catch? Can anybody explain?

1) Add 10 friends to a shared account
2) Each friend pays $6 for a new game
3) Share as needed
????
4) Profit?

I'm not buying this console though. Maybe in a few years.

I bet you can only have one person playing a certain game at a time.

Scrap that. I bet only one person can access the entire library at a time.

Fuck ALL of you guys who buy this thing. Dead serious. Real talk.

This actually pisses me off. People are celebrating and defending this kind of anti-consumer bullshit.

Un-fucking-believable. I hope this things crashes and burns. HARD.

The catch is "family members".

The problem here is that EA and MS are doing the DRM thing. I'm finding it pretty hard to believe that EA would release a game on Xbox One that has DRM and release it on PS4 without DRM.

The way I feel is EA will likely reimplement their drm as it is now on PS4. Sony already said its up to publishers to decide their own. Plus I'm thinking that PS4 will be much more successful than XBone so if EA wants some damn money they will play along.

Yup - We had a whole thread confirming the PS4 can be played totally offline and full of people playing ignorant.

Have they said publishers won't require you to be online to launch a game?

Sony have used very sly language. "You can play used games" and "you can use the system offine". Both of those statements are true of Xbox.

I thought it was up to 10 people (accounts) but on the same Xbox? Just being able to give the game to 10 people is pretty sweet.

10 accounts on your family account meaning in the house with multiple Xboxes of GT I assume yes, not out to friends unless they can be added to family somehow

If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command

Why is everyone ignoring the family member thing? Who gives a fuck that you can't lend games when you can let "family members" winkwink, play it? Am I missing something?

Everything else sucks and there will still be hidden stuff regarding the family thing.

Pretty sure that will require Xbox Live Gold for each "family" member too.

What about my Gamefly account??? I use it all the time to see if I like the game (which is a great thing to have these days with so many games coming out) and usually end up buying quite a few of them. If they are not allowing rentals anymore then this just as wrong as a Tijuana donkey show....

Also, what kind of revenue hit will Gamefly take when this happens?

Also lol at Publishers being able to choose if their games should be allowed to be traded in! Online passes is one thing, but the entire game? This is merely the beginning to more fuck consumers in the ass ploys.

If one company was going to pioneer such crap, it had to be Microsoft. It's the pay to play online of this generation.

Wow, if Sony does this shit as well, Wii U might have the most amazing comeback in the history of gaming.

Don't forget, on top of it all, you'll most likely have to pay for Gold to be allowed to have access to some of these features!!

The family stuff is very clear. Again:

* Up to 10 "members of your family".
* Play from any Xbox One.
* Any ONE of your family members can be playing from your shared library AT A GIVEN TIME.

This IS as bad as people have been saying it would be.

Yeah, anyone thinking they can have some kind of "friends pretending to be family club" and buy one game between 10 people for all to play at the same time is batshit insane.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Umm, how is this any different than the PS4? Sony has said its up to the publishers there, MS just said the same thing. How are the situations different?

Also interested in the share games with 10 family members, how will the One know they are "family"?

Jaffe loves it too. All publishers and developers are actually celebrating right now. Having champagne parties. MS has saved the industry.

Most people only buy a new game because they have been able to sell the old one and i'm not talking about selling for $6 at Gamespot but for me selling for $30 on Kijiji(like craigslist.) Without the ability to do this most people won't buy as many games. They shouldn't be happy.

People sell used games so they can buy more new ones. On PC the games are cheaper in the first instance. Case in point, Tomb Raider (probably the last new PC game I bought) was £21 on launch from Green Man Gaming. £35-£40 on console. With used sales choked, it'd be even more expensive on XBone.

It will also charm first day sales, as I guess more people will wait for impressions. It's a hell of a risk to spend £40 on some average game and not be able to get any of that money back.

Yeah, the Steam comparison doesn't really fly for multiple reasons, but the biggest one being that people are willing to take the "DRM" of Steam because it's a pretty good, consistent service that ALSO offers games at significant discounts fairly often. If the Xbox One actually manages to start offering crazy deals on games on a regular basis like Steam does we could have this conversation again then. The problem is that Microsoft has done nothing to earn that assumption, quite the opposite really.

It's crazy but when you think about the XB1 will be the first console where you cannot years from now, purchase a used set with a lot of games on eBay. Unless the original profile is on the system, which would be dumb from a security point of view.

Seriously. This POS will be a brick when the Xbone 2 comes along. I can still whip out a Dreamcast and play the games. Not so with this abomination.

They need to bite at some point and give details on their system and DRM. Which i don't think is going to be very much different to Xbox.

Sony on blocking used games: “It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.”

MS on blocking used games: "...game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers."

They are both clearly going in the same direction, only question remains is how Sony will implement it without having to check via an internet connection.

Can someone clarify? I find it confusing. =/
Sorry for being an idot.

It's ok because it is meant to be confusing...

24h internet checks
no private sales
sales to retail have to be approved by publisher
games can be given to exactly 1 friend (has to be on your friendlist for at least 30 days)
no rental of games

It's over. The question is, is it over for just Microsoft or the entire industry? If Sony goes this route I'm going back to PS2.
