Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I have no problem with DRM.

But people are idiots if they do not realize this is just "legacy" stuff just like the 360's Xbox 1 support at launch. All this "loan games to friends under certain conditions" and "trade in games to certain retailers," that will all go away eventually, just like the backwards compatibililty promises were phased out.

This policy is just a trojan horse method of appeasement.

i hated how, every year, my caff in my school raised the pizza slice by .25 cents.

course of 4 years, the 2 dollar pizza became 3 dollars.

right now, after 10~ years. the pizza at my old highschool is 3.50

...huh.

Except steam is on a open platform with lots of other competing services where as the xbox is a closed platform no competition at all from anyone else to drive game prices down.

Eh? I didn't know MSFT is the only one selling games now?

Crap, there goes those awesome Amazon sales.

This is going to change consumer buying habits irrevocably!

I swear they will do all this anti-consumer bulshit and they will just end up with less people buying their games.

The mass market doesn't seem to care, from my limited observation.

I ask all of my friends IRL who like Xbox if they care and they really don't.

"My internet doesn't go out..."
"They said you can still sell and buy your used games."
"The graphics on the next Halo are gonna be sick."

They really don't give a damn.

Folks, it's time you get with the times. All software except for games moved down this path many years ago. The physical "I own the software" time is over. It's only time when music stops making CD's and movies stop producing DVD's and go all 'cloud'.

Will cost come down with games in this new world? I think so. No more are the publishers stuck with agreements with retail to sell downloadable games at the same price as retail. Steam can offer sales because retail abandoned PC games. Steam just filled a hole. MS and Sony must see this and act accordingly or there will not be another generation.

Worst part so far is Cliffy B, David Jaffe and other devs condescending to people.

"Over-reacting"?

Eat a massive interstellar cruiser full of shit.

Ahh yes Cliffy B, the man who thinks hes the only one who has ever been with a good looking woman or driven a nice car.

He can do one as far as I am concerned. He's alright when his game is about to launch, just dont give it a 8/10

Stunned at the # of people that are OK with this. MS just put out a release that confirms most if not all of our worst fears regarding DRM and used/rented games and there's a sizable contingent of people that are happy about this?

It's not, you can't give trade games on steam.....

or gift them.....

Of course not. A digital game purchased and downloaded on Steam is a completely different product compared to a physical game disc you went into a store and bought. Purchases of physical property belong to a separate paradigm entirely. Or, at least, they used to, before MS decided to change the paradigm.

Looking at his history: yes, he did.

That one is not joking, shill as well.

Many of them aren't "people" as such.

It gets better when you start looking at the posting history of these accounts.

You find accounts with 40 posts that are only active to either defend Microsoft or shit on the products of one of its competitors, over years. You find people that implied XB1 hardware secret sauce right up to the reveal. Then you can start identifying the various diversionary tactics that have been designed to deflect from or counter genuine issues, and how they evolve over time. It's a dark place, and discovering it has made me a more angry poster.

I wonder....? Neogaf seems like an awkward site to do that kind of thing, considering the wait for membership, but some people do seem particularly devoid of logic/reason.

What's hard to understand? Someone starts Call of Duty. The other 9 people on your list are no longer allowed to play Call of Duty until the game has been freed up. It's no different than you passing a physical disc around. No more than one person can play the game at any given time.

I think the more important question now is, how does one make it known to these companies that this is an anti-consumer decision?

This is what I've been saying. They're not going to care because of these factors. Don't take the "family" list literally. It will be any 10 people you designate as family.

Or it is the way new family xbox live accounts work up to 10 people. So if your "family" member is banned your games are gone to since accounts are linked.

Look, Microsoft. People want console gaming. What you're giving, with bullshit like the App Store and Steam, is PC gaming. This means, I'm not buying your console. I'm buying the PC version of any game on your console that interests me. And you've already scared off your XBLA stable to make games on Steam instead. I suppose you'll get an Xbox related sale out of me when I buy a new controller to play these games on PC as one of the ones I own has a faulty LB button.

This "console" does not let you play a game without some license authority nearby unless you shell out cash. That's not how console gaming works. It's just not. You might as well drop the discs; in the far future if I somehow ream myself in the ass and decide to buy this as a "Microsoft developed Steam Box", I'd only buy digital because that's all it's good for.

To share the game I would take a very strong bet your "family" will have to each pay for xbox live and be in a family network of sorts like they where doing with the family plan. That pay wall grows and grows.

Wait, so THIS is their version of appeasement? Oh god, what is their version of fucking us in the ass?

I think GameStop might be happy with the used games policy. They continue doing business as is and not have any real competition.

Of course they'll be happy, since you won't have permission to sell or buy used games anywhere else other than the Microsoft approved retailers of which they will be part of.

I did. EA's complete abandonment of Nintendo pretty much confirmed to me that this was happening.

I can't wait to see what happens if Sony allows all used games. I'd expect the same thing.

EA not already going all "unprecedented partnership" on Sony like they did with MS is giving me hope. Sony just might not do this bullshit.

The 24hr check-in thing is going to last until the first DDOS attack paralyzes the authentication servers... Talk about handing the hacktivists a giant fucking hammer to beat you about the head with lol.

What an achilles heel... omfg what were they thinking?

The "participating retailers" bit is funny too, what're the odds that this is going to be extremely limited geographically at first; like US/UK only.

Bottom line: I'm no fan of the current situation regarding used-games, but this is just a BAD solution, its fucking awful.

Jim Sterling deserves special credit since May 21. He has not for one second allowed Microsoft to stomp all over him with PR nonsense. Sticking up for the consumers is the ONLY right thing to do as a game journalist; if you do not, get the fuck out

Yeah, he's pretty much the only (press) guy that sees it for what it is.

I'm completely confused about the 10 family members thing. What the shit does that even mean? And how does it work?

I'm sure it's like having 5 favorite friends on your phone contract that you can call at any time without being charged minutes.

These are 10 people that can see and play your games at all times.

And we all thought nothing could be worse than 599 US Dollars and giant enemy crabs. Well think again.

If only we knew half of what we know now, back in '06/

No renting. No lending. No resale. Always online.

Fuck off.

Was day one with OG Xbox and X360. Never touching this one.

GS makes out like a bandit. Less competition means less they need to give you and they get "used" games with less wear and tear since they aren't spinning in the drive all the time.

Pretty much. That is what is funny about this. Publishers have treated GS like the bad guy for years now blaming them for all their faults and now they are going to give them even more power.

Wow, so everything ended up being true. The worst of it is no renting or properly lending games. I'm sorry, but I don't have $60 to drop on every game that I want to bloody play.

•Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud. So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but does this mean you have to install the game on your friend's console in order to play it? Or do you just sign in and play it via the cloud storage?

This is a sad day, for the industry even. I guess things will never be the same.

For people who are all or mostly digital though (like me), I can kind of see where people are coming from who aren't as outraged as others.
Well, it could be better too if Microsoft gets burned really, really, REALLY badly with this, as that'd probably stall out similar happening with Sony or anyone else until we reach a point where it's legitimately unavoidable for whatever reason. Of course if Sony does the same or damn close (at least the dialing home BS) and they get burned badly as well... things will end up really, REALLY interesting to see, albeit likely not good for core gaming unless PC or maybe Wii U has a huge surge. Wii U would be just fine with me, but probably not those who mainly wanted cutting edge games.
