Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Just got home...holy shit, is it just me or is this just super convoluted, messy, and nonsensical? It's sorta like when someone is trying to give you bad news but they're trying really hard to make it seem like it's good news?

I don't understand how they can make something so simple so fucking confusing. Good job, Microsoft. Maybe some idiots will actually take your bullshit and eat it.

They purposely did that by using negative statements. The use of the word "enable" is a good point to notice. People think.. yeah, they're enabling me! It's empowering, however in reality they're actually restricting you. It's fun with words. This whole thing is still a huge bad idea and this is still just as bad if not worse than what was initially revealed.

I just don't understand why it's necessary to connect every 24hrs. What purpose does that serve? It seems like Microsoft is just making a product that is worse and it shouldn't be that way. Instead, they should be busting their ass trying to make the console that everyone wants. When they release this it shouldn't sell and that's the only way they will receive the message that it's a shit console. It doesn't matter though because it will end up selling.

Console Checks in Every 24 hours

Trade-ins are up to the publisher and only at participating retailers

Ouch.

The literal text of what you posted has Sony saying they did not consider a DRM scheme similar to what Ubisoft used and later dropped because it was so severe. The XBONE is not "always-online". A console that needs to check in every 24 hours is not "always-online".

A console that needs to connect to the internet every 24 hours in order to play games is essentially always online.

Just wait for all the 'cloud' games - then the 24 hour check-in will be like a dream scenario.

Bone is a mess, tbh.

I'm sure it's like having 5 favorite friends on your phone contract that you can call at any time without being charged minutes.

These are 10 people that can see and play your games at all times.

I'm pretty sure it's more like a phone family plan, except only 1 person can make a call at any give time.

•Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud. So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but does this mean you have to install the game on your friend's console in order to play it? Or do you just sign in and play it via the cloud storage?

Yes, you have to install on a friends console.

I want to ask something (if I can survive the post assault). Given that yosp has said that the PS4 can be enjoyed completely offline ("old school"), how is it possible for Sony to implement ANYTHING of all these. Am I wrong to be optimistic about it?

This doesn't sound all that good to me at all tbh. As this gen wore on I pretty much took to buying all my console games used, from a little indie shop near my house. I assume this policy means they won't be selling xbone games correct? And that's just the immediate part that effects me directly, I'm leaving well alone the ramifications of all the rest of it.

Is the sharing with 10 people thing basically PS "gamesharing"?

That seems really too good to be true. $6 for brand new games.

Or it is the way new family xbox live accounts work up to 10 people. So if your "family" member is banned your games are gone to since accounts are linked.

I'm not sure if this will be possible because you have to factor in how accounts were created in the past on the Xbox 360. Xbox accounts are not starting from scratch. If they were, then yes you could implement it this way. But they're already tied by the fact that a ton of people have accounts already.

No, because only one person at a time can play. It's not as good as PSN.

Hasn't MS had a family XBL Gold plan for a while? From what I remember, all the billing information was shared, or something, which discouraged friends from sharing the plan. And would be doubly effective with the death of points for purchasing. I could see MS using that framework to determine Xbone family.

I'm just sad I'm going to miss out on the xbone exclusives. Hopefully nothing too awesome will be denied me...

Cuz fuck this console.

I'm genuinely worried about PS4 now, though we have been told Internet check-ups aren't required. That says a lot.

Bye bye XB1. If I cant trade in my games to places like Gamestop or craigslist/ebay then you lost a customer. Ill still wait it out because Gamestop might be all in on this but then again only SOME publishers might enable 'trading' in games. So we'll see.

If Sony does this too then I dont know what i'll do. Most likely just say fuck it and buy whichever system offers me more as a consumer but I will most definitely buy LESS games. Not because I want to but because selling my used shit has always given me a lot of money to put back towards the industry.

Nintendo didn't use DRM so it's only logical that Sony won't! After all it'd only be logical to compare a Japaneses company to another Japaneses company. Right?

LOL

Am not sure if your being sarcastic, this has nothing to do with the country the parent company originated from. This has to do with how the company is run, and as we have seen over the years they (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) do not run their company the same way, so when someone states that "Sony will probably do the same" as a justification for Microsoft doing it, it comes off sounding idiotic. Not to say Sony might not end up doing it, but Sony doing it does not make it right. As they say: "Two wrongs don't make a right

I love the people who think this means you won't have to buy two copies of a game to play online multiplayer in the same house.

I mean, really.

I'm sorry - I buy a game, I put it in, and press start. If I need to download a patch, fine. Anything other than that, I'm not interested.

well you need to buy two copies of a game to do that now

Yes, some people do, in fact, not like that and don't buy them, but may change their mind if they can buy it on sale 66%-90% off on Steam.

And let's be honest, Steam isn't this shady about how they talk about this stuff.

In other news... might be time to look into some PC gaming, folks. Based on what this mess looks like, PC gaming looks to be nowhere near the hassle.

GS makes out like a bandit. Less competition means less they need to give you and they get "used" games with less wear and tear since they aren't spinning in the drive all the time.

Still will have Best buy, Amazon, and other corporate entities out there, who honestly are more on Gamestop's radar then your local mom and pop. However, this does screw over small businesses, unless "participating retailers" is an easy way for any retail store to sign up as an "authorized" reseller. Time will tell.

From their own systems no matter where they are in the world?

They can collect their own achievements on their own profiles without ever installing the disk or downloading anything? Everything is pulled from the cloud because I'm on the original owners "Top Ten List"?

Is that right?!

Yep don't actually own the games, then no thanks MS

IF sony do the same thing with PS4, not going that route either

As I have said before, if I have to buy games with DRM then I will just make a PC as Steam sounded much better before and now sounds even better

Sure the family thing sounds great

How exactly are you going to prove to MS that you're family?

How do they check that? MS ain't one to let you share games with anyone lol

They will have rules upon rules for it mark my words

Wouldn't be surprised if it checked ip addresses or something so you're all in the same household but on different consoles is ok

This stinks....I hope they do something about renting/lending games. I really like renting from Red box. It has saved me from some bad purchases.

The mass market doesn't seem to care, from my limited observation.

I ask all of my friends IRL who like Xbox if they care and they really don't.

"My internet doesn't go out..."
"They said you can still sell and buy your used games."
"The graphics on the next Halo are gonna be sick."

They really don't give a damn.

3 friends =/= mass market.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of people without a broadband connection. Can't wait for this to blow up and hit the news.

steam doesn't have an online check-in, and it has strict resale/DRM rules (in that you can't, period).

if they want to, they'll find a way. if they don't, they won't. I don't really think the online check-in thing will factor into used games either way on the PS4 though.

It all makes sense now.

The used games sales publishers have been bitching about aren't their retail partners at Gamestop, Best Buy, etc. giving $10 in trade value for a game they'll turn around and sell for $55.

No, the used games "problem" in the industry is us shitty consumers. We let untold MILLIONS of people just borrow our games, we sell them on the black market that benefits NO ONE (not directly affiliated with the publishers themselves), and we have this inordinate sense of entitlement whereby we think that if a game is shit we shouldn't be stuck with it until they personally feel it's acceptable for us to trade it in to their specific list of retail partners.

This isn't anti-used games. This is anti-consumer in it's purest form. Consumers are the only target here (except Gamefly I guess). Microsoft and their partners are literally saying the problem with the industry are their customers.

Absolutely brilliant conclusion. How could this have played out any better? Gamestop, Best Buy, etc. were just handed a monopoly on buying used games. Why give $10 for that game you'll sell for $55 now? Why not just give $5? Its not like these poor saps will KEEP it since it won't work in 10 years when the XB1 servers are shut down and you can't update your 24 hour registration.

Fucking hell. Die in a fire games industry.
I just want to quote this post, because it's true.

Kinect is going to use the facial recognition to tag people. It will ask new people "Are you a part of the family?" and use the heart rate monitor to tell if you are lying.

The funny stuff are the parts MS thinks are "good" and "nice", which are not there at launch and maybe never will.
Maybe they just add this stuff, which will be not ready at launch, just to the list to generate less rage until people just forget all this and MS never release this stuff.

But for me the worse part is still min. req. of 1.5Mbps!
There are millions here in germany with 1Mbps or less :/
Why the hell i need 1.5mbps for online gaming?

No trading used games on Steam. Only gifting new codes there.

Only really free place is GOG with no DRM.
