NPD via Major Nelson: Close to 50% more online gamers in USA use 360 than PS3...

First, we want to thank you for choosing and for spending more time with us. In the last 12 months, we delivered more than 20 billion hours of gaming and entertainment on Xbox, over 17% growth over the previous year. We’re proud and humbled to be the top online gaming service – according to NPD’s August 2013 Online Gaming report, close to 50% more online console gamers use the Xbox 360 for playing online than the PlayStation 3.

So that's interesting. Would love to see that online gaming report...

Isn't this taken for granted since it's NPD and the US? I'd expect something similar here in the UK as well

How is this even tracked, just by having any xbox live account or what. Its a pretty useless stat if its just accounts made.

Is this proportional?

If it's not, well I mean, the 360 is more than 50% higher than PS3 in unit sales in the US.

Well... yeah. It's no secret the US is 360 territory.

But for how much longer?

I wonder how long the dude who does Sony press releases has waited for the day when they can call Playstation x the best selling console of the month.

PS3 was on top for the slim release month iirc tho.

I'm more interested in the 20 billion hour breakdown into Netflix, HBO go and actual gaming and if the 360 still trails behind the PS3 in entertainment app usage.

It would be interesting to learn more about what "online gamers" are, or the actual data this is based on.

Not that I don't buy the 360 having more hours online (in the US), but even the wording itself seems like its some specific data stretched to sound like more than it is. 50% is a lot.

Didn't Sony say more PS3 users connect to the Internet on their console? Isn't the Wii the home of the highest Netflix userbase? So it isn't just people connected. I imagine its something like "people who spend more than x hours playing multiplayer games online" rather than "gamers who have connected to the Internet"

The 360 has around 50-60% bigger install base in the US if I remember correctly. So considering playstation 3 online is free, it is very impressive. Really goes to show despite the whole RROD fiasco that the ratio of actively used 360s to ps3s seems to be about equivalent to sales.

You know.. I almost wonder if he's out there getting this info out because PS3 possibly outsold xbox 360 in the US due to the GTA bundle? Also does anyone know for sure if Amazon is counted in the US npds?

And why are you focusing on your platform that has been out for 7 years? Tell me why I should buy the new one.

Are you being serious? NPD releases data that shows the 360 in a positive light and you expect Microsoft not to flaunt it? If the report had showed PS3 gamers playing online more often than 360 gamers, you can be damn sure Sony would be stringing the news up on a flagpole and parading it all over the internet.

I believe that's actually PS3 last I heard.

that is what i don't get really. those PR honchos use sometimes those, actually nothing telling phrases, "xyz is the best selling abc, backed up bei NPD". Mostly saying "well we are the best in the USA". Then the blogs, pseudo blogs, news base their opinions on ongoing topics on that, though the world is more than just what NPD covers. globally active companies should have that in mind, although i know its better for them, when people think those numbers are world wide.

Yes I am being serious. They have a $500 price point to justify and telling me the 360 has a higher user base (something I have known for a while) is not going to do it.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
That's a nice way to put a 40\60 split in their home territory, i guess?

I personally thought the PS3 would be ahead due to the XBLG paywall. I mean the 360 does indeed sell more, but not all of those are people who buy gold subs and by last count, MS claimed there were 40m (I think) online connected gamers (not gold subscribers, which is undoubtedly lower), so 360 still beating the PS3 by nearly 50% is surprising to me.

To me Live is only better for ONE reason - you have the ability to mute all communication. It's not something I've ever paid for though and I probably won't pay for online on PS4 either, unless they continue offering free games like current PS+

I used to be online with my 360 until I realised than other than purchasing an indie game occasionally the online did nothing more than help Microsoft serve advertisements to me. Now when I boot up I get a nice black rectangle occupying three quarters of the options of the home tab telling me to plug it to a network to get an improve experience, or something along those lines...

Where have you been? PS4 will follow the same route as PS+ on PS3, "free" games every month, discounts, early betas etc...Also, Gaikai is rolling out but the pricing on that is difficult to guess.

Drive Club and Resogun are day one PS+ games...

With the PS3, just buy a cheap $5 sound card, plug it into the system and route all voice audio to that output (in the system settings): All mute function achieved.

But I fully expect we get a real system-wide (and not game based) mute function on PS4, so this kind of work-around won't be necessary anymore.
