Nintendo doesn't need to beat MS and Sony at their own game but they do need to meet some basic standards. Long ass gaming droughts kind of kill a console and Nintendo has had these multiple times over multiple generations. If they won't get third party support, they need to man up and build the support either through partnerships or through expanded development. They come up with some cool ideas but they need to show some consistency as well. You can't say motion controls are a gaming revolution and then just give it up. That is flakey beyond belief.

Lost in all the salivating over cell phone Mario is the fact that their portable gaming division is in no way their problem. I don't think they want to cannibalize their 3DS market like that.

And while the Wii U has had a rough start, they're also committed to it for at least the next year, so I don't think you're going to see them ordering Xbox One devkits any time soon.

Fair enough. In that case I'd wait until Mario Kart 8 to drop the price, and then hit the media with a huge 'MK8 + PRICE DROP!!!!' advertising blitz.

that's been my thinking. if they have the biggest game they're releasing for the machine coming out anyway, might as well really make it count.

It's sad that it's possible that Nintendo has already manufactured all of the Wii U's they'll ever need :(

they really have themselves to blame. i can't believe what a fiasco the wii u was. it's like it didn't even come from the same minds that the wii did.

This is only good news for gamers. We get to play Nintendo games on hardware we actually like and own, and Nintendo games will finally be compared directly to other next gen games, this forcing Nintendo devs to up their game. Reality has caught up to Nintendo.

They don't have to go 3rd party, and probably won't. I really don't get why many posters are acting like this is the end, is it like this on every Nintendo is doomed thread?

The problem Nintendo has right now is that the 3DS peaked, more than anything else. They are obviously working on their next handheld but I don't expect them to release it until 2016/17, do you guys think their plans may change because of this?

Also, I know we're not the minority but I love the Wii U, and I don't even care about the PS4 or One.

Putting more effort into targeting core gamers is their best bet to fixing some of their bigger issues IMO.
That's not surprising coming from him.

It'll be time to buy some really soon, I guess.

Depending on Iwata's response on the 30th, they could plunge even lower. A "Please understand" would net the most negative response.

Regardless, this period would be a good time to buy if Nintendo announces plans for mobile devices later on in the year.

It's up to you to decide whether Nintendo is actually going to go that route. ;-)

For example:

mobile mario ain't happening

^ He thinks there's no way in hell that it would happen.

Yep, and this is how their shares are distributed:

That is risky? Shouldnt nintendo proceed to buy out some of its own shares? How much money would it take for an aggressive takeover?

Their portable division is shrinking significantly, both in terms of hardware and software. Nintendo needs to be prepared to embrace mobile platforms if they can't stop mobile from rendering dedicated handhelds more and more niche. Some of their IPs are even well suited for it, F2P Pokemon or Animal Crossing could be incredibly successful on mobile.

Same crap I've been reading almost every gen for Nintendo and one thing they know how to do best is jump back and and destroy the competition. Someone make a img of my quote and use it when E3 rolls around, all of you will be eating your words!

The day Nintendo starts putting there stuff on mobile will be the death of the company and gaming as a whole. i see nothing on next gen that remotely interests me. yet ive had a blast with w101 and Mario 3d world. i use the pad for streaming video at night before i sleep with the tv off, its awesome. Nintendo just needs to learn how to market it, and more importantly get some software going on the console. Going ios/android isn't the solution but a short term band-aid that would heavy damage the Nintendo brand. likewise if Nintendo went third party, again it would heavily damage the brand. it would be Sega 2.0 and we all saw what happened to Sega, a decent into irrelevance outside a few niche titles and sonic.

Think about it this way, If apple made it easy to install osx mavericks on non apple hardware products, would people still drop the $1500+ on a mac book pro, or buy an average pc that's cheaper looks nice and just slap on osx? Nintendo like apple's experiences are inherently tied to the hardware software combination they respectively use. To ask Nintendo to just give up that synergy up because one "failed" console, and one bad year of business is madness. Things need to be fixed but the proposed solutions by the media do nothing good when thinking in the long term.

There is zero evidence this is the case but Iwata should send some strippers with knives to Gabe Newell immediately

Japanese history sets a somewhat different precedent for paying lovely women with knives to visit potential rivals than what you may be hoping for, regardless of how much Gabe loves knives and is indifferent to strippers.

yep. going after both audiences is a nonstarter. either it has to be like the other systems (complex and expensive) or not like them at all (accessible and inexpensive). with the wii u and 3ds they went with complex and expensive, but acted like they were accessible.
I don't see why they wouldn't have teams working on both mobile and consoles, assuming they go 3rd party.

Personally I think they should just try releasing ports of old games like SE(only not at stupid prices) before doing something crazy like moving Pokemon and AC to mobile.

I'm not saying Nintendo should go third party but posts like these aren't helping.

Nintendo would be fine as long as they restructure and get a headstart on third party development. SEGA had no chance of doing this.
Also, SEGA already destroyed their brand. Remember 32X?

This past week has been the first time that I ever legitimately feared for Nintendo's future. Depressing times.

It just pisses me off so much because I look at mobile, I look at PC, I look at Western games, I look at Xbox One and I see very little that I want to play at all. I look at PS4 and see a few things that I want to play. Vita moreso. But the only company that hits the mark almost 100% of the time for me is Nintendo and if they cave in to this mobile garbage or go third party I feel like I'm going to go nuts.
Feel this way too. Good thing is that Nintendo has always pulled through. They managed to turn the n64/gc/3ds around when they get desperate. Just hoping that mobile/third party to not be their solution.

well i'm talking about making hardware in this case. a third-party nintendo probably shouldn't make games for consoles when their audience isn't there. sony and microsoft don't court the families/kid audience so it's not worth pursuing.

and really, a third-party nintendo would be better off doing something like playstation now, a service they can promote across multiple devices. maybe sell a year subscription with a controller that plugs into a usb or something.

I agree. I was really talking long-term if their the handheld market continues to decline.

With how badly Nintendo treats the VC on their own platforms, I don't think VC is a make or break thing for anyone buying a console.

VC on mobile isn't a bad idea now. At least it would give more kids playing Nintendo's games.

Exactly. Nintendo should make Super Mario Brothers All Stars Volume Two. Will buy day one.

I always assumed that if Nintendo DID put stuff on mobile, it would be classic franchise like the original Mario, or Mario Kart. I can't see them putting out new titles on mobile/tablet, as long as they want to stay in the hardware business.

I said this in another thread, but if they were smart, they would create a mobile division to make small games for iOS with Nintendo themes. Mario Casino or some shit, would sell well.

Hes, because without physical buttons Mario would be unplayable shit.

Then don't buy it. Mobile/tablet games generally play poorly. People still buy them. The point is to make money here, not appease you. I would never go near a classic Nintendo game ported to mobile for the reasons you stated.

Really? Why do some of you care so much if Nintendo releases stuff on mobile. Jesus.

There's a significant fear that they'll go down the same path that Square and Capcom and other companies are going down with mobile, or that if they go all the way and abandon making hardware they'll become even more conservative with what they fund. Goodbye to anything like Wonderful 101 or Bayonetta 2 or Sin and Punishment 2 or any of the other billion quirky things they do simply because they can or because they need something to fill in space in the library to help move their console. No more unusual hardware or software initiatives like the Wii remote or Miiverse - they don't make the console anymore! Just Mario, Zelda, Pokemon games and spinoff games all the time. Just like Sega.

There's a charm that Nintendo has that comes with them being a purely first party developer, a distinct gaming philosophy that is not replicated anywhere else in the industry right now. And it's starting to implode and that's frightening to a lot of people who want the kind of alternative that Nintendo provides rather than have them be swept up in the trends currently gripping the industry.

Mobile Mario wouldn't even do much business on IOS/Android. Platformers aren't big sellers on mobile. Pokemon would be money though.

I hope that Nintendo comes to their senses and can adopt to the gaming world of today. A world without Nintendo hardware is a world that is a bit more sad.
I will at least get a Wii U soon, I feel that there are just about enough interesting games out and in the near future that makes it worth it for me, I hope that more people feel the same way.
