Best combat of any game?

God of War games in general, loved Horizon Zero Dawns overall combat against the machines and most or all souls borne games.

For TPS I thoroughly enjoy Uncharted combat and traversal implementation in mp.

For FPS I think Resistance 3 just felt sooooo good.

OH someone mentioned dishonored and I agree now tht I think of it. Ninja Gaiden games too.

I still need to play Atelier. I don't have a Vita though... I mean, I have a PS4 and PC, but this seems like the game that I'd enjoy more lying in bed.

Super Castlevania IV has to be one of my favorite playable games of all-time.

Not 100% sure about best combat (control niggles), actually would mark down GoW (4) for the same reason (because turn on R stick is tank controls..)

but surely Rising has the best boss fights ever ? (pls start that thread someone)

Definitely the best boss fights ever, especially the final fight against Armstrong.

Came here for Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor Edge, OP did not disappoint. Best combat in an action game ever. Also, some of the best level-design, especially when you tackle the optional boss of each stage along the way. The game IS challenging, and I like to do all optional bosses in a clean run with the unlevelled character.

Bayonetta is worth mentioning as well, even if I do find Ninja Gaiden 3 RE much better. And Bayonetta 1 is >>>>> Bayonetta 2 in terms of pure gameplay and level-design.

If I had to pick a Tactical-RPG, it would probably be Mystaria on Saturn. The game aged quite a lot visually, but the battle mechanics and map layouts are fantastic. This game respects your intelligence and you will get destroyed if you don't take the time to think about your actions. It does not require too much time either, so it respects your time as well. Great balance.

The Wonderful 101 for me. The defensive options and resource management mixed with the crazy amount of combat interactions is just a step above. It's one of those games where you come up with some clever idea and it always turns out to be actually possible. It just rewards creativity in the most satisfying ways.

I see Nier Automata being cited a bit, but I don't understand why. Combat felt pretty basic and did not require much efforts, and even if you can do elaborated stuff, it is absolutely not required to do so. So things could be improved. I found that this game had serviceable gameplay, but that's it.

Well if you play normal difficulty, Its was same way with Bayonetta that in normal difficulty you basically button mash through the entire game.

It's one of the most fun I've ever had as a button masher + some combo depth.

Way way too easy though. Which is why I wouldn't cite it myself.

Well shit, you already picked the best ones OP :messenger_winking:

I'll nominate God Hand instead. It feels like a dog's dinner when you first pick up the pad, but once you get used to the tank controls and become one with the jank it turns into one of the finest beat 'em ups ever made.

Yeah, but Bayo doesn't let you level up your character in the same way NieR does- you get more utility, but there are no damage buffs tied to your stats.

The combat and animations in Automata are superb, but after a point it becomes meaningless because you're doing enough damage to kill before finishing a single combo.

As much as I LOVE NieR Automata, I agree the RPG elements in Automata is not very well balanced.

I also like to mention, World Ends with you on DS.

This game has most interesting and unique combat I have seen in JRPG.

The combat in DmC was definitely better and more fun than DMC5.

Monster Hunter and Dark souls to me have some of the best combat out there. For RPG? maybe... Grandia.

I doubt many will agree but - Ryse.

The combat, blocking and finishing moves feel so satisfying, realistic and have oomph to them. Not to mention, the facial expressions while the combat is being performed really pushes it even further.

It's a simple and somewhat repetitive game but I think Ryse is criminally underrated and has some of the some satisfying combat I've ever experienced.

This so much. It would have been my favorite game this gen if not for this. As it was I just stopped playing. afaik there's no way to stop the OP leveling.

I was literally 1 shotting all the the end game bosses (inside the tower) (including a brief light attack from the droid).. I had to just toy with them to see a few of their moves.

Tendency to blame SquareEnix management asking for "players to be able to feel a sense of increasing power with leveling" or something - cannot believe Platinum did this to themselfs - unless Taura or another of the newer P* designers is incompetent. If I was in charge someone would be escorted out of the front door by security for that cock up. lol.

.. they already had a levelling/power system with the chips AND weapon upgrades.. wtf they added level scaling too. Mystery of the generation.

What a fantastic game even despite that..

As flawed as the RPG elements are, the core combat still fantastic. You can be very creative with your combos using Pod programs.

I have some clear winners in some genres or categories:

Fighting: Tekken, maybe VF5 is better if i go by what the internet tells me since i never invested enough time to understand it well, but Tekken has survived super well while having a skill ceiling as high as you want basically. Tekken 7 is amazing in that sence, tiers are becoming meaningless in that game, there is a fucking Panda World Champion, like WTF, that's commitment. EVO 2018 was crazy fun in Tekken

In third person melee combat, i think DMC5 is the obvious winner, that game is everything, it has every mechanic and polish you could want to in its combat.

TPS is kinda of a tie for me between Vanquish and Uncharted 4, i know Vanquish already has a lot of internet clout but people like to shit on uncharted because is story driven, the truth is that it's combat is super unique and adaptable, if anything, the campaings are not getting everything out of the core mechanics. Combat is super focused on movement and efficient use of melee, no too diferent than Vanquish in that sense....i really need to make a highlight video for uncharted 4's combat. Random sample i had upload showcasing movement and options.

I've been playing a lot of X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror From the Deep since finding the OpenX-COM mod, and without a doubt the combat really holds up today. The mod makes a few tweaks to UI and resolution here and there, but funnily it still hold it's own without them.

It makes it difficult to enjoy the recent releases, given how shallow the experience is in those titles. Both of which needed DLC to make them a fully fleshed out ecperience...and even then they still felt quite meagre in comparion.

First thing it comes to my mind nowadays, when I hear combat is Dmc, Ninja Theory fucking nailed it
Aside from any critics about Dante appearance, emo haircut!!111 that game has a crazy good, state of the art Battle system

Ex aequo with Destiny 2 ( whose I'm a big fan of, it's pretty clear from my posts haha) the best fps so far, by miles, it's so intuitive and smooth, It has a so good and fluid movement, and a satisfactying gunplay, I have an hard time trying to imagine someone capable of top it
Every Battle is an adrenaline shot

Then MG Rising
Star Wars The Force unleashed I-II

Arkham series, who established a new combat genre himself with the freeflow, and Spidey who greatly benefited from him, punching felonies, put one to KO then rapidly stick another one to a wall with a fast web is addictive lol

Mind elaborating on how tank controls translates to a good TPS? I just find them outdated and frustrating.

You're right for DC1, though I still love it like the First day, but DC2 has top notch fight even nowadays, just going around shooting dinos is so much fun

Mgsv has good combat too, but I maybe played aggressively like 30 minutes over 175 hours I played overall, almost 100% stealth through it

I didn't include any fighting game in this list on purpose, too much predictable

I Also include Darth Maul from Battlefront 2, love the hell out of all Force heroes, but he's absolutely incredible to play as

Oh and does WWE Day of reckoning 2 count? That game was awesome

For Honor is great, but I have some difficulties to be good ad it again, even at lower difficulties :(

I insert R6 siege too, pure satisfaction

And Re4

LOL I'm on the way to insert every existing title on earth 😂
