China has warned Donald Trump that he will be defying the wishes of the entire planet if he acts on his vow to back away from the Paris climate agreement after he becomes US president next January.

In a sign of how far the world has shifted in recognising the need to tackle global warming, Beijing — once seen as an obstructive force in UN climate talks — is now leading the push for progress by responding to fears that Mr Trump would pull the US out of the landmark accord.

“It is global society’s will that all want to co-operate to combat climate change,” a senior Beijing negotiator said in Marrakesh on Friday, at the first round of UN talks since the Paris deal was sealed last December. The Chinese negotiators added that “any movement by the new US government” would not affect their transition towards becoming a greener economy.

India also joined in the warnings, saying Mr Trump’s appointment would force countries to reassess an accord hailed as an end to the fossil fuel era...

...“We’re talking about the big challenge of climate change,” said Russia’s lead negotiator, Oleg Shamanov. “This issue is bigger than life. This is a long-term issue, longer than any mandate of any president of country X or Z, even if that country is a big one.”
Fossil fuel me if old.

When China is warning you of your consequences regarding climate change that's when you know there's something rotten on your side.

As noted before, China is going to push back hard on this.

Putin won't be far behind, he's also on board with fighting climate change (particularly since the negative repercussions are rather serious for his homeland).

This will just make him to want to do it even faster.

There's a four year buffer put in place by the original draft, so Trump can't do much but threaten to pull out in four years. If he threatens it for now, China and the rest of the world will hit the US hard with sanctions. Four years of heavy sanctions is going to hurt, a lot.

Hahaha I knew it, the easiest way for world leaders to take advantage of this is to make the US look like the bad guys.

Tbf China only started giving a shit when people's mouths started to be filled with clumps of LITERAL SMOG.

And at this point, Republicans will only start to do the same whenever that happens in th US

Shit, this could escalate if these countries literally believe this threatens their lives.....which it kind of does.

Considering the Siberian permafrost has begun to melt, it's not too surprising that Putin would be big on fighting CC.

This is an issue that goes far beyond the borders of the US.

But who cares what i say, i'm just likely to be part of the first generation that will have to deal with the full effect of neglecting the climate, nothing special, right?

To some this planet is their home, to others a piggybank

Trump has to realize how bad going the course of fossil fuels will be

you fuck the planet. But also as efficiencies are made that bring green energy well beyond the efficiencies of fossil fuel, you lose an opportunity to become a central player in the field. When price:watt goes in favor of green, US would be fucked as no one will want fossil fuels anyways. Sticking to it is just going to hurt them in the end.

Supermaterials are about to change the world and the USA is going to miss out.

Pretty interesting that China of all people would warn about this

Very interesting

Makes you think, doesn't it?

The pessimist in me thinks it's just because the US abandoning the Paris Climate Agreement would just give them a competitive business advantage (as in, China is using this as a ruse and don't really care about the environment at all.)

let us hope that trump will be more like the mold for the people and wishes of the world (cause he has no clue what he is doing) and will actually do things that will benefit america or he can bet his ass that an angry mob will be out for his wig.

also it is scary when china and Russia are actually wanting to stop climate change from getting even worse than it already is.but it is good because it shows that in even in bad people they have some good qualities about them (talking about Putin here mostly)

In defence of China, per capita emissions are not *that* bad and much of what they emit can be blamed on the west as a big share of their emissions are from manufacturing things for the West. I always find it interesting that the Gulf nations who emit the most evade blame, and outside of them (since they are so small) so do Australia who are the next biggest culprit per capita.

I really hope he doesn't back out as this is shit that could have a really bad long term impact. He is bound to it for four years though right?

Hopefully countries are willing to push back hard.

Most ironic part is that a bigger push for clean energy could create jobs, but Trump and company don't want to see that because it doesn't favor the existing big money.

Oh Putin will be extremely serious on this matter, no doubt.

We're on a precipice, the whole rest of the world would be right of mind to nuke the US under Trump if he actually tries to do shit that would speed-up the climate change and its impacts. It would endanger the entire human species.

Well China is in huge trouble with pollution that it is adversely killing their people.

They are desperate to move to renewable and clean energy sources.

China is investing a lot in renewable energy sources. They are #1 in both solar and wind by installations.

The time for naive optimism was before November 8th, 2016.

Damn even Russia is against pulling out of the agreement? Maybe Putin can pull the puppet strings to do good for once.

lf Russia's pushing for this then maybe he'll listen to reason there afterall!

Or is he just going to go full super villain?

If you guys have watched Before then Flood (Leonardo Di Caprio's documentary about climate change), you'll see that China has actually changed dramatically and I think is actually doing better than the USA (not sure about the latter point but they're definitely going in the right direction), so this isn't surprising!

The US should pave the way for other countries and yet it's doing the opposite. Sad!
