China is seriously pushing towards renewables and electric vehicles.

Never thought I'd see the day that I'd view them as a the saviors of the planet and the US as the villians

Eh, the US have always been the villains in terms of co2 output. Your output has always been way higher than any country (with some very few exceptions).

China and Russia have to stupid with glee over this. In the biggest, broadest picture, what both of those countries want is to be seen as honest-to-goodness world leaders, not just in economics or in military terms, but also in soft power. They want to be acknowledged as leaders, and that's something that takes more than a strong military or a robust economy.

To become the leaders of the environmental cause would be a huge coup for them and their legitimacy and a large diminishing of America's role in the world.
