ive been reading some studies that basically say how gaming ruins our dopamine receptors and the reward system inside our brain

ive seen alot of people that say how they feel unmotivated and because in their mind their biggest achievement is getting the best gear , finishing a hard game like souls games but when it comes to their personal life they never went above average , they never felt to reach a higher place in their profesion , they never improved their health through diet or exercise

ive been gaming since i was around 8 years old , im 32 now and i dont think that my dopamine receptors are screwed

do you think that gaming stopped you from achieving more in life ?

Yes, gaming can get in the way of your actual life if you allow it. If all you do is game non-stop and can't take breaks it's a problem and I'm sure it's affecting your life one way or another.

But like everything, you gotta be disciplined. I play games but I also hit the gym almost everyday because I want to take care of my body. I also love my career and make sure that I'm on top of everything, once those two things are satisfied I enjoy my games guilt free if you will hahhah

But if all you do is game and got nothing else going on, it's a problem unless you do it professionally and make money from it.

You can't take exceptions and apply that to everyone. So what if few guys made it big and are millionaires, there are hundreds million gamers out there.
And thers hundreds millions poor and homeless ppl that never touched a videogame. Assossiating videogames to ur success or failure in life is dumb. Videogames are a hobby, some ppl can now make loads of money thanks to platforms like Twich and Youtube just by playing videogames, others will just consume it as entertainment.

Same way some ppl spend they life in social media and watching tiktoks, while just a few get millionairs by creating content.

If your are addicted to videogames to the point you dont want to do anything else, then its a problem, but ppl get addicted to all kinds of things and all those addictions can become a problem.

Sorry bro, not going to convince me watching tiktoks all day and playing games all day is somehow a good thing for you. Like I said if you're making a living from it great, but even when you make a living you can't be consumed by it.

Gaming ruined my life. Now, I only can feel happiness the couple minutes of the police car chase after robbing a bank, or when breaking into a house and looting everything. I even took steroids to minmax my physical stats, but the growth rates are too low for my taste.

As a young kid , yeah , after 21 , nope, unless you f u with addiction as a child then you've to deal with it the rest of your life , but after that age it all depends on what you do and eat like getting enough sleep and eating pumpkin seeds.

It can if you're addicted but other things such as porn, masturbation, drugs, drinking and fast food and even music fuck them up a lot more.

Addiction aren't just related to video games, you're just mentioning common symptoms of addiction in general.

I highly recommend watching this podcast from Dr. Andrew Huberman and Dr. Anna Lembke, both Standford professors who specialise in Neuroscience.

Dr. Anna specialises in addiction and it’s clinical therapy. She mentioned how gaming is a highly rewarding task in terms of dopamine response which means it’s much higher to develop the risk of addiction, and what many may not know is that addiction causes many negative
changes in brain due to the low dopamine.

Here’s another clip of Dr. Huberman talking about how his nephew was failing school, became anti-social and depressed because he developed an addiction to gaming. He was ultimately cured by abstaining. Again it’s not that gaming itself is bad, but high dopamine activities really need to be enjoyed in moderation.

People who are addicted often have the same symptoms as people who have ADHD, and in some cases it can cause mis-diagnosis.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Been doing the weed + videogames combo for many years now. I think my dopamine receptors are fine, but it's true that I've procrastinated in some aspects, like exercising or game development.

Maybe my receptors are kinda fucked up after all... or it could be just lazyness. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

1. Stop playing GAAS / live service garbage
2. Stop playing open world shitfests

The above two are the biggest problems plaguing modern day gaming. They're all an unnecessary waste of time.

I prefer linear 8-12 hour experiences for that reason alone.

I can go days and weeks without playing games mind you. But I use it as a tool to relax after work. The problem is many games demand an unnecessary amount of your valuable time with pointless additions and useless quests.

gaming is the least of the problems. porn and drugs are much more dangerous in that aspect. not that im innocent. used to do alot of drugs in my younger days. now i just smoke weed and even that can be a problem on your brain chemistry if used habitually for a long period.

I've been gaming for as long as you. I'm 38 and a principal engineering lead at pretty much the height of my technical field.

So the answer is no for me.

I think porn has a significantly worse impact than gaming. And I also believe that the worst games for ruining our dopamine receptors are the super addictive MMOs and GaaS tripe that is specifically designed by devs using research from clinical psychologists to manipulate gamers into keeping on playing the game.

As long as you stay clear of that shit. You'll be alright.

Same with porn. At some point it's just not enough anymore... Or basically everything else that keeps your dopamine levels constantly high. That's how certain drugs, food, sugar etc work as well. It's all about the dosis.

It's not irreversible, though. Taking a break should be fine and work well. I don't think receptors are permanently screwed.

I’ve known people where this is definitely the case but for me - no. I’ve never been into MMOs and for the last few years Ive only gamed when other people would be watching shit TV.

you mention souls games… they have taught me patience and persistence and moved me. I cannot wait to play through Dark Souls 1 with my son.

One has to be very careful with studies, as there has been for some time now a proliferation of them funded by diverse interests in order to manipulate opinion and policies, there are quite a few bogus journals that can make them see as legit. I would not be surprised if NA christian militant groups are behind most of this anti porn/game propaganda, the same type of groups that infiltrated the US supreme court to ban abortion for example.
