Hidetaka Miyazaki has been named one of the 100 most influential people of 2023 by Time magazine.

The From Software president has directed a string of highly influential games including Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and most recently the fantasy blockbuster Elden Ring.

He becomes only the second video game developer to ever be featured on the Time 100 list, following Shigeru Miyamoto in 2007.

The annual list, which notes people of influence from all walks of life including politics, sport and the arts, also this year features US president Joe Biden, Elon Musk, and World Cup winner Lionel Messi.

His approach to game design and difficulty has been a massive kick up the arse for video games.......I would love to see him take on something fresh and new,the Souls thing is stale as fuck to me.Given the sales of Elden Ring I am in the minority there though, lol.

Well deserved.

Easily the best and most consistent designed of the last 10-15 years.

I mean, most influential might be a little weird given how little other studios have actually (successfully) implemented many of his design philosophies.

GOAT tier game director. Completely changed my taste in video games with Demon's Souls in 2009. Before that I was somewhat of a filthy casual, but when I finally git gud with the subsequent Soulsborne-games, I transformed into a bonafide hardcore aficionado who spits in the face of easy difficulty modes.

LOL. Alright, who on the Time staff is a Dark Souls fan?

He has been very influential in the game industry though.....

I bet Elden Ring ends up influencing a ton of different creative endeavours for many years to come.

He must be getting so much action at home rn.

Dont get me wrong, I love the Souls games, but dude have been making "the same game, but different" ever since Demons Souls originally launched.

Personally, I think that Famito Ueda (that inspired Miyazaki to make games, btw) and Kojima are both way better directors (in very different ways).

But this is a 2023 award, and he certainly deserves it for Elden Ring.

Naw. I love the way Demon's Souls remake looks, but it's doesn't have that FROM Je ne sais quoi.
I'm not comparing the developers or arguing in favor of the creative liberties taken by BluePoint.

It's what FromSoftware game design would more or less look like with higher quality assets /models etc. So it's not hard to imagine is my point.

Okay, fair enough. It does seem like the missing piece. IMO, these are some of the very best games every made, and if they can pair their unrivaled game design with better tech, I legitimately can't think of a reason it wouldn't be the best game ever made, at risk of sounding hyperbolic. I mean, I could already accept that answer for Elden Ring as it currently exists.

It certainly would be great if they moved to an updated engine that resulted in not only better visuals, even if not bleeding edge, but also better performance.

Although considering how well their titles are doing despite that, I don't see that happening anytime soon. Maybe once they move development from cross-gen support entirely to current-ben hardware 🤷‍♂️

Winning game awards, sure, but among 100 most influencal people of the entire world? WTF
Is this some pandering list, including some figures from groups as diverse as possible and some Tiktok dancer, some Twitch streamer some K-Pop idol and whatnot is also included?
I doubt even among gamers 50% can name him as the creator of souls games, and certainly practically no one outside of gaming.
He basically just did one game and made iterations from it, that's the usual standard for many creatives that are not on the level of Miyamoto which is probably the only figure that might actually deserve to be on such a list.

I don't think you realize Miyazaki as a game director has already surpassed the likes of Kojima and is as famous as Miyamoto outside the forums
Dude made nothing but masterpieces considered some of the best games ever made and basically made a new genre of games

The top 100 most influential people will never appear in the top 100 most influential lists lmao.
