Ghost of Tsushima - Review Thread

As far as review scores it’s what I expected for Suckerpunch and glad it managed to stick in the 80s. Would’ve been worried for the future of them if it didn’t.

It’ll sell quite well and maybe get a goty nomination if they’re lucky. Hopefully next time with or sequel or whatever they’ll work out the flaws and propel themselves into a top tier developer. For now, they’re just good/solid.
Insomniac, Suckerpunch, and Sony Bend haven’t made a must own essential game yet.

But they’re 3 studios that have laid good groundwork for sequels to give them an uncharted 2 moment hopefully. Looking forward to what they do next and hopefully they get that final push towards essential greatness!

Spider-man is a must own to a lot of people... massive franchise now thanks to Insomniac. I loved R&C too.... I think they are top 3 of Sonys studios... SSM, ND and Insomniac, followed by Guerrilla.

I can agree with that. Spider-Man is just like Spider-Man haha it’s great for anyone to play and I’d recommend it to anyone. Idk, still feel like ND and Santa Monica are decently above the rest of PS studios. Horizon 2 can get them on the level possibly. Insomniac I feel is just feel like are very versatile studio and is more about output than long development cycles. That’s not a bad thing, but they have extremely strong output and most of the time it’s great shorter games.

They're very consistent and as you say 'versatile'... I was really surprised that they had R&C and Spider-man MM both ready to show for the last presentation. I agree with you on pretty much everything...

Maybe SP should be given budget to get a few hires to improve story, writing and character design a little, I think that would boost their scores a few points.

Well, it doesn't need to require skill if it's satisfying. It did lose some of its lusters after a while but there is nothing that compares to it when it comes to traversal in open-world games, it's a unique quality to Spider-Man, it sets it apart. Overall, the web-slinging, fighting, and navigation mechanics (point jump, attachment to buildings, etc.) is an absolute masterclass in gameplay mechanics, it's must have taken a massive amount of work to get all those systems to work as well as it does. Now, that doesn't mean the game is amazing, I think the 87 on Meta is about right, but if you try and boot up that game and sling around a bit, it's hard not to get impressed by what they pulled off.
Something that requires skill is more satisfying to me.

I won’t deny it’s quite an achievement, as you said, but if it was less auto-pilot, I’d probably enjoy it more. That’s me though.

Yeah it’s crazy. Any word on release time for ratchet? I suppose 2022? What about Spider-Man sequel as well? Lol man they’re machines. I think they may even make a game for PSVR2. They really were such a great buy for PlayStation

Still waiting for SP to top the original Infamous. Loved that game. Haven't really been a fan of anything they've done sense.

They need to add a harder difficulty mode based on many reviews saying the game is very easy

I'd count on a VR title after R&C, they have serious talent in that area I hear.

I think they will always have a team on Spider-man now though.

I think Sony should expand into Marvel properties though.... maybe a Logan / Wolverine game or a game based around a villain such as Doctor Doom.

Popped in and fucking around with Second Son. Mocap and facial expressions still look impressive six years later. Plus that soundtrack. Fuck. Brain from Primus wrote half that album or more.

Sucker Punch always delivers in the soundtrack department.

Can’t wait til Friday. Hype is reaching critical mass.

I can’t wait! Looks amazing, i’m a bit eeary of gameplay though. It’s like along the road of development they decided they didn’t want to force a gameplay choice of ghost or otherwise, dumbed down things. But all this is from what i’ve read of some reviews, and they really don’t add to my decision, cause it’s already bought 🤣.

I do have to mention, i read kotaku’s review and one bit left me dumb. Reviewermentions that there is the Kurosawa mode filter that adds the monochromatic b/w filter, but that it doesn’t add much else, not warm like the Kurosawa films... I’m like, what did he expect, it’s just a b/w filter 🤷🏽‍♂️.

By the way...who’s doing the OT? Looking forward to it!

some questions for anyone here who has reviewed and played the game.

1. is it just melee or does jin use range attacks?
2. how extensive is the armor? are there armor sets and is there also an inventory item limit?
3. how much sidequests are there?
4. without going into spoilers, is it a solid ending or does it set up for a sequel (which i doubt there can be one due to the historical events).

He was talking about the story.
I can understand why you don’t like the story but if you’re saying tlou 2 gameplay isn’t fun so you must be crazy.
Yeah, prime example from TLOU2 mid game:

The Abby vs Ellie first boss fight is objectively a great little cat and mouse boss fight and Ellies AI is soooo good to fight against. It reminded me of an MGS boss fight. She will even mock you for using tactics like throwing bottles to distract her

But the whole time it doesnt feel "fun" because you're in Abbys shoes. It feels conflicted

All I take from Druckmann is the gameplay can be as fun as anything buy not to shy away from violence or uncomfortable moments

this man has to be the most professional reviewer in gaming, don't trust any other opinion until he vouches for the game.

I'm not convinced he's ever seen a cherry blossom tree, but it was a good review. :p

It is my 4th favorite game this gen. The point isn’t that the game is bad, just too much at times and we need a gamey game with focus on pulpy action as opposed to dense themes right now.

I prefer more darker games and want more of what tlou2 offered. But sure ghost will be relaxing in its own right. The beauty of being a PlayStation gamer

Eh, even as someone who liked it, 28 hrs of that was too much. Overstayed its welcome by 5+ hrs.

28 hours? My clock said 19 hours when I finished it. That’s a 10 hour difference. It dragged its feet a little. I read where the main quest for GoT is about 20 hours. Anymore, I don’t really expect total game length to be accurate. The time is what you invest in it. Going from point A to point B is always going to be looked at differently.

Variety is the spice of life and I can appreciate both colorful and darker games. If movies can have both comedies and gritty thrillers why can't we have different kinds of games? Anyway I pulled the trigger and pre ordered it. The footage I saw today sold me.

Combat seems really boring and easy . Enemies takes turn in attacking :messenger_grinning_squinting: Seems like it's just as I expected , flash over substance
Thats on an easier difficulty and this is prevalent in most games. However if you want to take it to a technical level I dont think you want 5 guys rushing in with swords as there will probably be friendly fire in the process, thats smart design

Peaceful places, that you just want to relax in and enjoy the vistas.... now that is an amazing open-world! That's what really makes it for me.

Yep, I did that in TLOU2 and even Dark souls 3 on PC. I love great vistas and the ones in this game will probably push my in game time to 60 hours lol

Good reviews! Though, disappointed to see a few knocks against the characters and writing in general. I'll wait for the players to get to voice their opinions on the narrative before I jump in at full price.
