How Microsoft isn’t getting its deserved credit.

The best thing Microsoft has done is to put all of their first and second-party games day and date on Steam with cross-play and both sets of achievements intact, essentially saying no to anti-consumer exclusives. You have a point that they have not gotten enough credit for this, because console fanboys are too busy arguing over what the second-best gaming platform is to see the big picture.

The best thing MS did for gaming was give us windows and indirectly Steam. The god of gaming platforms. For this, we all should be eternally grateful that we are not stuck with macintosh and apple shit show for our PC gaming needs.

That said, it's been a year with no first party exclusive game release on xbox, so the timing of this thread is mid tier trash level. Sorry OP.

Steam is cool but I haven’t bought a single game on there since I got gamepass. Like right now I’m playing the new Plague Tale and there is zero chance I would’ve payed $70 for it on steam…

The reason I use xbox is because I don't really care about sonys exclusives despite having a PS4.

And because I prefer their controller.

It did start out with Halo Gears and Foza back in the day,amd ironically I don't really play any of them today.

I have had racing fatigue for some years now, I don't like the balance in gears of War, and Infinite lacks content.

Gamepass is nice when you have a PC and Xbox combo. Many of them can be played on both with cross saved, and there's some games only available to either platform.

Agreed. Hate on Mattrick all you want, but the guy DID know how to line up exclusives and get them out.

Cmon dude, people praise MS each time they buy big publishers for too much billions. What do you want more? No opposition? No competition just like in the OS "market"?

They absolutely don’t get enough credit. The gaming industry is far better having them in it. Look all the things they have done through the generations they have been part of. They have helped shaped the current Industry as we know it today.

Great memories. But of course, you have the usually crew in this forum who shoot down EVERYTHING Microsoft related.

For what?

Is it?

Look carefully.

"Industry as we know it today"..... Yikes.

Well, you can't handle the truth then.

The thread is a bit of a "ah okay" moment, but I'll agree with the sentiment in general. They do a lot of things better than anyone else but it doesn't get as much attention because the platform is smaller overall and as such isn't as represented on boards like this one.

I mean, xbox trying to increase the price was a fucking shitty move NGL, but excluding it to Microsoft, given sonys changes in price point lately is hypocrisy
Glad you enthusiastically agree with my bullet point, which wasn’t just that they simply attempt increase Gold but tried to double it. This is a thread in Microsoft so my points are focused on them vs ‘warring’, and it followed my positive points on them. There’s been many threads on Sony’s failings and it wasn’t the focus of this thread.

👆 case in point.

I agree.

Microsoft has done a lot of great stuff for the gaming industry and that can't be denied at all.

They've been well ahead in terms of features too, that get zero credit at all.

Like free cloud saves, I literally booted up my save file from killer is dead on the Xbox 360 and finished the game on the series X 9 years later, without any screen tearing!

Great stuff.

Microsoft get credit for the good things that they do. Its just that outside a few years with the 360, they have lacked consistently quality game releases. They have largely been shit in that department since like 2009. They still struggle today with it. 2022 has been a no show and don't get me started on what's happened to halo. They still have a long way to go.

I fail to see the lack of attention on Xbox on this or any other forum. Xbox is part of the daily conversation here.

I agree Xbox has great features. I disagree that they get "zero credit". Whenever console features are brought up, people like yourself are always here to give credit for what you believe are features that should be credited. To say those features are given "zero credit at all" is not true. For example, your post here is factually not the first time anyone has praised Xbox cloud saves. Quick resume is a feature that has been lauded numerous times. Dolby Atmos. Dolby Vision. None of these have received "zero credit".

To be fair Phil was likely the one who signed contracts for The Ascent, Tunic, The Medium, and they had new Xbox 1st party release Psychonauts 2, MS Flight Sim, Gears Tactics, Hivebusters, plus Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite as you said. And Gamepass was nice but I assume that’s not Phil’s doing.

MS does not get enough credit for what it did in general gaming development (particularly on PC), which includes tools, apis, frameworks, engine back-ends, ETC.

Xbox on the other hand, simply should not be just sliding on that GamePass fame and built their fucking games right.

This is a pretty ridiculous topic. The only thing Microsoft really does get credit for are GamePass and Backwards compatability because their software output certainly brings no attention worth commanding to the table at the present moment. It's literally the only thing they can rely on until their studios actually start releasing games.

And GamePass / BC are NO SUBSTITUTE for new games either, so they should be rightfully criticized for their lackluster output

I shouldn't say zero credit, but definitely under credited. :)
It's a feature I never even thought about and was pleasantly surprised when all my saves for skate 3 and pretty much everything else I've ever played on Xbox 360/Xbox one was on my series X without any hassle.

Obviously someone somewhere (especially on a gaming forum) will probably have praised x or y feature :)

Hell yeah. I can't speak to the gaming side of a development but I haven't seen any company equip developers as well as Microsoft does.

I'm with you there. Cloud saves are certainly under appreciated on Xbox. Sucks having to pay for them elsewhere.

It just one of them things I had never even thought about before and was pleasantly surprised by :)

Especially when switching over to Xbox one in the first place and shifting my Xbox 360, I never thought I'd have any use or anything for these saves, as you couldn't play Xbox 360 games originally. 🤷‍♂️

But here I am going back to 360 games I never finished in the past :)

It's a shame it isn't free on other platforms though, definitely a feature I don't think people even think about or consider.

GamePass is only a rental service for me. If the game is worth supporting, I'll buy it on Steam. To each his own though. The only wrong ways to do PC gaming are (1) not to do it or (2) to support Epic Games.

I haven't been into racing games in a long time. And I keep going back to Forza Horizon. That Hot Wheels event is one of my favorite/most fun things I played this year

Once they get a nice stream of releases going in the next year or two I think they'll really be on to something.

N it'll be several years till it will be transformed into paid hub for cencored, politically correct live service hell.
GP is pretty great as of now n ll be like that for some time, but this "greatness" is there as a tool for getting the market by it's balls
How devious, making a great service just so people use it…

The censorship argument is also quite hilarious when you know the situation with Japanese devs, where one platform is removing way more content than the others.

I don’t believe GP price will go up because it’s designed to bring people to the ecosystem. Once they are in they will spend the other 80% of MS’ gaming revenue.

For everything you list with MS regarding making good moves this gen, there are caveats and in some cases done better by other platform holders. GamePass IMO still has not proven its worth; remember the service was pushed messaging-wise to have all MS 1P games Day 1...but the games have been very slow to come, especially of the AAA variety. Quite a few of which have come, have died off relatively quickly or didn't make a lot of a splash to begin with. They have several games revealed in 2020 and even 2019 that we still have no release dates for, but credible rumors of a few being in various states of dev hell/trouble. That doesn't inspire confidence.

GamePass's existence also seems to be the fuel for MS to make numerous mass-scale 3P publisher acquisitions, or at least that's their intent. The notion they need an ever-increasing amount of content to "fuel the beast that is GamePass" has always been false; you just need a decent amount of QUALITY content, high quality at that in ways that command presence. I personally don't have an issue with MS buying Zenimax, or even ABK, but I think if/when the ABK acquisition is approved, they need to chill on further acquisitions for a few years.

It's time they actually show they can do some amazing things with what they already own, instead of adding even more food on a plate they've barely started to eat, otherwise it will make them look gluttonous and greedy (something they're already contending with not just with many gamers but also regulators investigating the ABK deal). IMO, take a good 4-5 years to make your acquisitions put out some consistently great work and elevate them beyond what they would've been able to accomplish if they hadn't been acquired. Show us what you can do in terms of managing these teams, and then maybe if/when you want to go after another publisher in the future, you'll have a lot less resistance from gamers and maybe even regulators.

BC is a nice feature to have, but apparently MS either can't justify (through demand or licensing costs) the need to add more OG Xbox support through the BC program. IMO it would've been best to just include some legacy hardware in these systems so they could do some hardware-based BC, but I understand the costs in ensuring that. I think Sega was onto something when they did BC for Master System (in the MegaDrive) because the way they planned their architectures was to bring forward older designs into new ones building on top of it. That way you could have your hardware-based BC but also use that legacy hardware alongside new hardware for next-gen games of the time. That was the plan with Saturn to some extent, too, but obviously that fell apart for various reasons.

Messaging is a mixed bag. TBH both MS and Sony have had some mixed messaging this gen, but focusing just on Microsoft: this ongoing ABK acquisition is really bringing out the worst in them and some of the zealots in the fanbase IMHO. Leaked documents from the court cases are showing hypocrisy in MS's messaging to regulators vs. messaging towards fans on the benefits and intentions of the acquisition. Their public Twitter account has actively engaged in enabling console war toxicity against PlayStation with specific tweets (including one within the past week or so), placating to some of the worst people in that community when it comes to anti-PlayStation toxicity like Colteastwood and Destin.

It's also hypocritical; you had Xbox executives and ambassadors calling for unity and being nice to each other in the gaming space when certain gaming credentials of people in the Xbox Ambassador program were exposed & questioned, but I don't see Aaron Greenburg or Phil Spencer on Twitter calling for peace among fanboys anymore when it involves stuff against PlayStation. I understand why they aren't doing that (MS and Sony are probably not on the best of terms these days considering what's going on with the ABK stuff), but it doesn't make it any less hypocritical.

Yeah Hot Wheels is fantastic, but why not release it as a stand-alone game? It’s an all new map, new mechanics, plays nothing like og FH5 and people will miss it and forget it even released. It’s as if Insomniac would’ve hidden Miles Morales inside of Spider-Man. Same goes for Hivebusters at launch. I don’t understand their thinking, they’re throwing great content under the bus. Do they need DLC money because of the day 1 Gamepass strategy?

Let’s start with releasing at least 1 must have title after 3 years into the generation 😬
Let’s start by learning to count to 3 because the gen started less than two years ago. And I’d argue at least Psychonauts 2 and FH5 are must have first party title but this kind of things is subjective by nature.

You would want to pay full price or 40 bucks for a DLC instead of having it as DLC for 15?

You'd really have to include Halo in there as well, it might not be perfect but still a must play for most of the Xbox userbase.

Going by the Most Played Xbox charts (let alone Steam charts), no it's not. I mean even supposing the Xbox population is 20x that of Steam's for the game, 60K concurrent peak for a flagship marquee MP-centric IP on its home territory of millions isn't really great IMHO.

I’d be gobsmacked if it has 20k concurrent players.

My comment was in reference to Gold offerings being worse than PS+’s offerings not in reference to price increases. I can see how you’d think it ironic if it were the other way.

PS Plus as a service having games like Demons Souls, Returnal, Spiderman Miles Morales, God of War, and FF7 R is incredible. Most PS owners have already played most of those but for those that havent tried them its great to check them out through the service

Gamepass is talked up highly. For a good reason, The quality of Gamepass games from first party just havent hit that level of those games I listed on PS Plus.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all have down their part in this industry. Sony and Nintendo have focused more on releasing games consistently
