Is There Any Fanservice In Western Games For Straight Men Anymore?

STOP IT YOU'RE RUINING THE NARRATIVE!!!
But lmao. They always act like straight men are the only people who like this. Like bi and lesbian women just don't exist or don't like looking at women.
Even straight woman like sexy female design. Like I said before there are lot of straight female cosplay as characters like 2B. I personally like sexy design in both female and male characters in my games.

I’m embarrassed to say that, up until now, I thought “fan service” in games was supposed to be “in game” software that helped the PS4’s fans from being too loud while playing. Which is also why I thought no games had any.

Leaving thread now.:messenger_pensive:

Quote from the article: "Our design is just getting more mature and respectful. You’re not going to wear a bikini to a fight. You’re not going to be showing so much skin. I think it’s just what the game is about: You’re going in to fight for your life, and you’re not going to be wearing such scantily clad items."
You could also argue that all fighters would be half naked and covered in oil to have an edge, because clothes will be used against you in a fight to the death, especially when there are no rules. Ideally, you'd wear something that counters your opponent... so you should have both, sexy stuff and heavy armor.

I mean you could find arguments for anything, really, this is why I hate when devs try to use real life logic on their fantasy games. It doesn't work and no body armor can protect you against someone swinging a sword at your neck, hands, feet whatever. This is especially funny when you look at the male cast... they badass steel skins, they need no protection, gaarrr.

So why bother with body armor/protective clothing for females at all? lol. They should come out and say it how it is, they succumbed to the regressive mindset where T&A=bad.

And what gave you the impression creatives are under the obligation to reflect the entire spectrum of women's bodies?

And along which dimensions? Weight? Height? Complexion?
Where do you draw the line and why?

You can think it's ok all you want. But do you have a valid reason why creators ought to conduct themselves accordingly when writing fiction?

Interesting.
So morbidly obese female midgets who limp would make for equally combat-worthy soldiers, right? And, therefore, equally valid candidates for protags in looter-shooters, right?

I don't think creatives ought to do anything in particular, but that it's ok to change things up when necessary and I'm not tied to tradition or Mortal Kombat's illustrious reputation as a rebellious product.

You're going to the extreme to make a point but half the op is about mild changes, manly wide cheek bones and clothing. If you go unto an Army base, the uniformed members will not resemble Lara Croft ok.

Don’t call people obtuse when you are the one okay with mediocrity. Everyone should strive for the best in entertainment not the backwards illogical stances you have going on.

I am okay with my games looking less attractive? Now that’s obtuse.

I've never associated the quality of the entertainment I consume with the level of attractiveness and or a characters lack of clothing. Good luck with that.
Ok go on thinking the average female is like Ronda Rousey then. Contrary to the way you people think most women like to be women and not pretend they're men.

Man what.

It's fucking bullshit you can't even bring up this topic without some braindead idiot calling you a misogynist, incel, virgin etc.
Side note I'm really proud of neogaf because this exact topic would have been locked after 3 posts not too long ago.

Due to my inability to discuss this topic like an adult, and to try and be 'clever' in an adolescent way, I have been removed from this thread.
There is something called pornographic sites

It's projection. They can't get laid and don't want to be reminded of it. They jizz in their pants if they can tear a woman apart in Mortal Kombat but avert their eyes if they see some skin.

This is a big part of what makes no sense about it, there's tons of female fans of sexy female characters, there are tons of sexy female cosplayers, clearly there's a large percentage of female fans who enjoy it, so why is it so taboo?

It's better to have eye candy than not have it, no we don't "need" it and it doesn't HAVE to be in every game, but it's nice when it's there, there's no reason it has to be so thoroughly scrubbed out for political reasons.

That is also a big part of what makes it so absurd and stupid, we live in an age where infinite pornography is at everyone's finger tips but it's the end of the world if a female game character shows some cleavage? Get the fuck outta hereeeeee....

I'm clearly not their audience anymore, but I always take issue with the way they word this (Paladins designer used the same argument). It sounds like they're saying you can't respect a female fighter in a bikini, which is just one step from calling her a whore. This kind of thinking used to be projected directly at women, "have some self respect, cover up". I guess indirect slut-shaming has proven more progressive and effective.

The whole thing about MK11 being "mature" and a "fight for your life" is just some halfhearted nonsense the individual probably thought-up a few minutes before the interview, in lieu of being able to give his real feelings on the matter.

For me, this is the meat of the Polygon piece: “I’m sure that will disappoint some fans. We don’t have bathing suit fighters, and I think that’s fine. If people are disappointed, I don’t regret making that change by any means.” The quote is another demonstration of the conceited attitude spilling out from the entertainment industry that chooses to dismiss consumers by essentially rubbing a middle finger in their face, telling them to either get on board or get lost. If a company decides to change how certain content is represented in their now 27 year old consumer product, at least have the decency to show a little respect to the customers that have been designated as potentially worth sacrificing. This is Mortal Kombat, of course, so the franchise has a lot of leeway in how it messages things, but this interview is something I'll remember, next time NetherRealms or Warner Bros. wants to sell me a game.

It must be hard to regret something that hasn't affected him yet. The game isn't even out yet. Let's see if he regrets it in six months.

While I would like to see this interview bite them in the ass, I don't expect it to happen with MK. I am interested to see, post launch, whether consumers who don't follow the media have mixed feelings about the game's female representation.

Yeah this unfortunately won't affect sales of mk whatsoever, cause normies love the story and the fatalities, so they will buy it in droves.

That's true, as well, unless the mechanics, over-the-top fatalities are screwed and the story becomes Tekken-levels of nonsense the MK series is not going to be hit hard.

Ah, the “Don’t like it? Don’t buy it!” marketing strategy that worked so well for Battlefield V last year. Good thinking.

Considering how women were represented in entertainment for the past several years I understand the need for change.

It's true that recently these companies may have overdone it to compensate like we see in Spiderman, etc... And as much as people hate to hear others say it...

The solution is to offer sexy options for all genders equally. I know some people dismiss such a primitive solution without a real argument against it, but it is ultimately what's fairest for everyone, and the quickest way to kill this stupid debate.

I'll say one thing though, seeing more and more female leads of different ethnicites is great. Perhaps avoiding fanservice during the first years of this shift is to help prove that we don't need sexualization to have a female lead both men and women care about, while capturing a certain subset of women who avoided games due to their sexual pandering nature toward male players.

This is too logical a solution, please see your way to the door.

Soul Calibur did (does? not sure lately) this actually. I remember Ivy in SC2 having her standard metal lingerie as her P1 outfit and this cool noble...lordly...type purple suit...thing? as her P2 outfit. It was a neat look and the total opposite of her standard fare.

But it’s not about options or equality anymore to Them. It’s about removing, destroying, taking away the things they decide they don’t like.

Update 3:

Mr. David Jaffe the creator of the God of War franchise shared his opinion about the topic of this thread, its very interesting to see the point of view of a veteran game dev who worked in the video game industry for years, i find his opinion about the exclusion of fanservice from western games in recent years very important , so thank you Mr. Jaffe much appreciated.

At 52:30 mark.

This is a very interesting viewpoint. Western developers aren't toning down on sexyness for the right reasons; they are just being nuttered.

Black Cat is sexy for a reason, and that should go with his looks (JUST like with Mary Jane, she's a normal girl so she should look normal).

If you're talking in the context of the recent Spider-Man game, I suppose that's true, but (at least traditionally) in the comics, she's supposed to be gorgeous, eventually going to work as a model.

I kind of said incorrectly. Mary Jane is not really sexy in the way Black Cat is.

The hypocrisy is nothing if impressive.

That's the only thing that actually annoyed me.
Don't BS me with "they're fighters so they would dress up" when you only do it for half the cast.
You wanna do that then go all in. Don't piss on me and tell me it's just a bit of rain.

I want to live in a world where Chun Li wears this as her default costume - or at least has it as official DLC

Brutal Ace is such a good modder.

Old and fat? Theres a winning combination for anyone who hates looking at pretty girls.
I expect to see this kind of stuff from Western devs at this point, but its still an ugly sight - in every sense of the word.

I really wish sexuality in western games wasn’t treated like such a crime nowadays. Censor this, censor that. It’s getting to be fucking ridiculous. I didn’t think Netherrealm would cave in like they did, but maybe WB is to blame for that one. Still, I am sick of it. There’s NOTHING wrong with sexuality. It’s human fucking nature. I guess anything and everything is going to offend SOMEONE these days. Why do we have to cater to this crap? There was nothing wrong with it before, so what’s so wrong with it now? I am getting really disgusted with western society as a whole. Everyone wants to throw a fit when they don’t like something. Seriously?

The Body Positive movement is the worst shit since mumble rap and youtubers happened. These idiots think being fat is the "new beautiful". No, it isn't, nor will it ever be. It's ok being fine with who you are but forcing people to find it beautiful is too much. Fuck this.

:messenger_savoring: The fatties need love too. I suggest you start putting out!
