Katawa Shoujo |OT| (VN, Free, Waifus, etc)

Tried this out for shits and giggles after a friend told me about it, but it's surprisingly fun so far. The writing's all-right, the music is nice and the story's got an interesting angle to it. For a dating sim, I mean.

Anyway, what's this I hear about Misha not having her own romance route?

Lilly, Hanako or Rin?!

Such a difficult decision!

I think by not picking shizune you made a mistake. :p

EDIT: You can choose between Misha and Shizune near the end of Shizunes route. Not sure why you would though, Shizune is by far the best character. <333

Finished up my first run through yesterday down the Emi route. It was surprisingly easy. I was going down the right path so they didn't really even offer me many choices, and when I went back to check the bad end stuff most of the choices are something along the lines of, "ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THIS THE RIGHT WAY?".

Was pretty happy with where the story went. I liked a lot of the themes even if the main character doesn't seem to be following them all that well. Looking forward to playing some other routes but I would be surprised if they're as interesting.

Maturity, bitches.
Played the demo yonks ago and have it freshly downloaded. Never got round to playing it yesterday, but I have a three day weekend now so I should be able to find some time. Looking forward to the chocolate.

The only problem I have with the protagonist is firstly, the way they've got the protagonist to speak English. Even though he's supposed to be friends with everyone he always speaks like he's speaking to his mum, he's far too formal. Secondly, in Shizune's route he learns sign language and after a single class he seems to be a master. I know that's down to the fact if it wasn't it'd make for a boring story, it's just whatever he wants to do he seems to be able to do immediately without any form of time lapse.

I picked up a lot of basic sign language when I was in fifth grade across the span of just a few weeks. It's surprisingly easy to learn actually.

Dunno why anyone wouldn't go Lilly. Also, fuck Rin. Also, I died.

I really stopped thinking much about their disabilities pretty quickly, which says a lot. I do like how the characters are quick to go "WELL MAYBE YOU SUCK" when the protag gets stuck with handling the girls disabilities.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
Even though I 100%'d the act 1 thing a few years ago I just got the shitty ending twice, woops. I'm going down Shizune's path first now.

Proud of having been a seeder of the Linux (and now fixed) version I wonder if I should seed the others, although with the people's camaraderie this project spawned and seeing the reception the 'gold' release had, I don't think it will be needed for a time.

Farewell, Four Leaf Studios (4LS)! Your final legacy will keep on going.

I've been following this game since 2009, and am good friends with the developers, so it's very nice to see a thread for the game here too. Enjoy your crippled waifus everyone.
I was wondering, and judging by your sketches (http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=32825665&postcount=15269)... have you collaborated with additional art or character designs that has been posted later (by you or another person) in some of the threads on 4Chan's /a/ about the project? Or I am confusing your work with someone's else? I remember thinking about it when I saw your posts here.
Also, you should post more on this forum as well!

Ended up on the Emi path despite pursuing a Hanako path. Damn my youthful exuberance! The second act is always enjoyable, though I can't recall if I made damn near any choices in the last hour or so. Who cares. Very interesting having nearly the exact same dialogue with Rin in some locations but it meaning very, very different things simply due to not having the correct context or prior relationship built between the two. It's real depressing being this close to her and not being able to meaningfully connect, but that's the nature of 'path'-based gameplay I suppose.

I love how Hisao overthinks everything in his brain but presents himself like a completely normal person.

Lol yeah, some of the art posted in /a/ threads are mine. You can find most of it, as well as a buttload of other fanart on the Shimmie and you can find my stuff under the name VCR (nsfw warning for some of the pics)
Don't scroll back too much or you'll see too much QUALITY art orz
.I'm mostly a fan, but I've helped the devs with a few minor things. I also designed the emblem that they used to replace the ones on the gates in the bgs, the Yamaku Salmon

Also I'm more of a lurker than anything really, I'm much more talkative on IRC, specifically animegaf's IRC channel

Just started this ..it's very nice to see that despite the fact that it's not a commercial work , everything seems "good".
Quite impressed by the team behind this.

Yeah, I was sort of indecisive if I wanted to take the Emi path or the Hanako path at first, but then I noticed an flag for the Emi path, and I just took it.

I certainly don't regret it. It was probably the most engrossed I've been in a romance in a long time, and somehow it knew exactly how to push each of my buttons and put me on edge over it
NTR threat, distancing, insecurity, hypocrisy, all very painful, but human relationship traits
, but it was all brought back together really well in the end and I have a hard time believing any of the other routes will be as good. Hisao's writing I feel is probably the game's weakest point. His observations are somewhat terse and sometimes the "VN language" (declaring something as cute/adorable/etc) came across poorly. What would have worked better would be Hisao's emotional/physical reactions rather than terse observation. Like, instead of saying "It was cute" they should have written "The way she purses her lips when she thinks about something sent impulses to my fingers to squeeze her cheeks and go 'd'awww', an impulse I thankfully resisted"

The rest of the cast, however, was written fantastically, and the way the story progresses is engrossingly natural in the progression of choices and the way that you can feel the impact of each selection without needing to try the other selections.

I'm glad to have played it. VNs don't tend to appeal to me, but this one, probably because English was the language of origin, managed to work out for me. I give it a recommendation. Sure, all the smut shows about nothing crucial, and having FTB moments in what's basically an adult game anyway always feels like a cop-out, but the other elements of the game work well. Heck, even the smut was very classily done and always felt like a part of the story more than "Congrats! Here's some 2D porn!" for my efforts to chose the correct response in wooing the waifus. With or without adult content, this game is certainly a top class douji-soft romance VN. The boys at 4Leaf Studios should be proud of themselves.

Downloading this right now just because.

I wonder what Raita (the guy who made the image that started it all, also the character artist for Valkyria Chronicles) thinks of this.

How the hell would you even die on Act 2? Heart attack? There's like one choice in the whole chapter, at least on the Lilly route. I must see all the deaths!

I'm not to familiar with how visual novels handle deaths or bad ends, but does this game have like checkpoints or anything or do I need to save constantly?

Hmm, that reminds of the time where I played and finished a game called kara no shoujo. Definitely giving this a shot, but these types of storylines always depress me at the end. (if you've played a shoujo game you'd know what I mean)

PS: If you enjoyed this game, you guys definitely should play Kara no Shoujo, its a top tier VN game.

I knew it! And I recognize and remember much of your drawings, of course... keep up the good work! And thank all the team on my behalf (although I've already shown my appreciation in other places and moments).

I'm mainly of the 'lurker' type as well (specially in here), but you are on another level, man!

The beginning is kind of slow, I'm only at the part where I get to talk to the black haired girl with scars the first time, do I get more choices later on with more paths?

Played for about an hour and honestly it's pretty boring. Will give it one more shot tonight before I hang it up.

Just save whenever there's a decision to be made (so you can backtrack if you want) and you'll be fine imo.

The library in extras seems to checkpoint all the decision points, so it's easy to backtrack even if you don't save all the time. Though I wish the skip mode went a bit faster.

I would have thought your dedication to girls in wheelchairs was stronger.

Played my first visual novel (Tsukihime) recently and I enjoyed that immensely so when I saw this thread I immediately decided to download this VN to get some more VN goodness.

I think I'll try to get on the Shizune rout seeing as she looks awesome and sign language is badass.

Hope it is good GAF!

Finished a third girl. Think I'm done with the game, got the enjoyment out of it I was going to get.

Are we suppose to be able to die in every act? Not sure how to do it in the later ones, or maybe I didn't pick the right choices.

Speaking of which, do VN's usually have lack of choice? I seriously didn't like the protagonist and wish I had more choices in order to change his responses. Obviously this is free and I've never played a game like this before so that might have something to do with it instead of generalizing about the genre in general.

Seriously went into this thinking it was a more "choice your adventure" type of books I read as a kid.

Isn't that the one Leigh Alexander wrote a pretty good perspective on?

I'm gonna say you probably chose badly if you didn't at least get to the end of Act 4. In terms of choice, the style of VN that Katawa Shoujo is a lot more novel and a lot less interactive.

So, I finished a first run-through. I went with the blind girl, and
she got fucked on the floor, felt up in the bath, fucked on the bathroom floor, fingered herself in front of Hisao whilst he was blindfolded, and then she fucked off to Scotland.

...Did I win

Yeah I probably should of changed my perspective just a tad and make the right choices...

like this one. I guess another run through is in order.

At least. Some have a third end which is between them.

Jesus, really? To think of how many times I almost ended up there in Emi's route. I... I don't think I even wanna know at this point... It would really be too hard on me... who knows, it might spawn a congenital heart defect and I'll have to finish college at some cripple school.

I was aiming to get Lily's route, but ended up (as far as i can tell form the Act2 intro) at Hanako's instead :V

Does the story branches from your choices at Act1?? or can you alter your route to end with another girl from Act2 onward?

Once you hit Act 2 you're on a route and can't get off.

Edit: Lilly and Hanako's routes are both pretty close in terms of getting on. Pick the other choice at the end of Act 1 on the Lilly/Hanako path and you'll hit Lilly's route.

Emi GOOD route finished!
While I saw the revelation of her father being dead coming a million miles away after the track meet (and what her mother said there), I think it was less about the actual reveal then it was about having Emi break open and be trusting. Also, the anal in the storage closet made me laugh.

I almost had a hnnnnggghhhh attack when they would do the track art for her, or her cute green-top casual outfit. Also her mom is hot. The nurse is such a bro, and hell, even they suggest in-game that he should have a cigarette :lol "I better check to make sure he didn't line my pills with cyanide."

I'm taking a break for a bit to distance myself from the game since I'm not going to be able to get into any of the other routes with Emi on the brain, but yeah, I agree. Actually, I kind of wish they
went to a hospital instead where he was in some sort of a coma or a quadriplegic vegetable. That certainly would have been a curveball, and it would have made the revelation that much more heart wrenching
. Still, I think the Emi route will be hard to top, so I really should have saved her for last or something. Then again, I don't think I'd have such high praise for the game if it weren't for that route...

Thanks! So that's how it works...

Doomed made me curious about Emi, she looks like the lamest character and was going to ditch checking her story altogether. Now I think ill check it out (after checking all the other girls first).

Well, I was aiming to see all the girls stories anyway(The writing is surprisingly good!), I hope i wont stumble into a bad end because of a vague choice :p

I finished Lilly's route. It wasn't quite as angsty as I was expecting, but it seems like the other routes go more in that direction.
