Media Create Sales: Week 30, 2011 (Jul 25 - Jul 31)

BladeoftheImmortal said:
why would retailers mark them down when they bought them for a higher price already? They'll wait for the last possible moment before they take a hit on their inventory.

They don't take a hit, Nintendo is reimbursing the difference of the price cut, they have utterly no reason to mark the price down of new systems till the 11th(they'd actually lose money if they did so, as no reimbursement from Nintendo)

I find it amazing PSP should hit near 20 million LTD in Japan, never would have thought that. Definitely a good place for Vita to start

Makes you wonder how well the console could have done if Nintendo hadn't treated it like shit. It seems like only 1 software hit was needed to get back to PS3 level sales. The short lifespan of the Wii was written in the stars for years now, but Nintendo didn't really do much to fight against it.

Still the weirdest aspect of this generation: Nintendo stomping everyone out of the gate, but the Sony platforms slowly chugging along and even reviving a bit after the Nintendo platforms have fizzled out.

I'm looking forward to the 3DS sales. The horrendous lows followed up by an (expected) peak will be entertaining.
Uhh....

|System | LTD |

| PS3 | 6.804.789 |
| WII | 11.670.002 |

I understand what you mean, but the Wii still has nearly double the consoles out there. PS3 has revived a bit but it's NEVER going to reach the LTD sales of the Wii, and that is saying something.

If you like archiving those, this other site has top 10 for systems and top 10 used sales, but with Media Create data. Also numberless.

Thanks, I didn't know about those either. I probably won't have time to archive Famitsu Top10s every week, but with MC Top 50 it's only really 360, NDS, and 3DS which have less than 10 games in it, so I'll probably just post the games outside of MC Top50 if I have time.

No need to point that out, as I wasn't denying it either. The DS vs PSP story is even better to illustrate. Nothing will reach the DS' LTD in a looong time, so I'm not denying Nintendo's success with the platform. It's just that when Nintendo has moved on to the 3DS, Sony is still relying on the PSP for a while, and ironically the platform is performing better than in its first years, especially in software sales/releases. Or so it seems at least. My main point was that (if you look back to 2005 and 2006) the Nintendo hardware was stomping all the competition into oblivion, while today weirdly enough the Sony hardware from that same generation is on top in weekly sales. I think this has rarely if ever happened in a generation.

For that alone this generation has been very interesting to follow. Oh man, and going through the Media Create threads from late 2005 to the end of 2006 are utterly hilarious, and the numbers are so ridiculously high compared to 2011 it's kinda sad. Hard to imagine a piece of hardware consistently selling between 200k and 300k on slow weeks like the DS has done for a while.

Could anyone explain why we get a Taiko Drum Master on PSP and not on DS anymore ?

That sounds like a strange move. But I heared in this forum a very relevant comment as to why third-parties progressively abandonned DS in favour of PSP. But I cannot remember what the argument was.

DS got a new Taiko last July, they can't release a new game every 12 months, so far only 3 there are for the system. This December there will be a new Wii or DS or 3DS Taiko.

I think it's time for Taiko to move next gen. 3DS holiday 2011, Wii U holiday 2012.

This is a survey from 4Gamer, the sample is big but not representative.

According to the article a proper market research from Media Create is following soon.

There are many points in the article. What I find interesting.

80% of those who participated at the survey belong to 20-30s showing the demographic of current 3DS adopters.

Software line-up is the biggest minus for 3DS and non 3DS owners, price comes after.

There isn't confidence for the future even with Mario Kart and Mario Land.

70% of them is interested in Vita.

Generally disappointment for 3DS.

And this guy's comment really reveals everything about this Gamasutra article...

I like this article. Much like all the other articles out there bemoaning the state of Nintendo's union, it's filled with numbers, like the fact that over 60% of early adopters are happy with their purchase, price drop or no. (Note how I call them early adopters--shall we go back and look at the launch of the original DS to compare?) It even tells you that only 9.4% of all people surveyed without a 3DS are considering a PSP Vita. What's more, the survey shows that over 60% of all the non-owners did *not* cite game library as their primary reason to hold off on a purchase! Just imagine how well the 3DS Lite will sell when it finally comes out, backed by what's soon to be a Nintendo-filled catalog of quality software!

...Wait, am I reading the data wrong? It's almost like I used the data to see only what I wanted. Hmm...

Well Media Create will soon release their market research so we'll just have to wait and see. Still, this is a good indication of how the Japanese core gamers think about the system and the pricedrop and there's just not enough games for them to be interested.

Is the guy basing those numbers straight from the 4gamer survey charts or second-hand though? I'd rather see the charts translated.

I don't really think a sample size of that low is really indicative of...anything, especially as it came only from a specific site's viewers. It's like if Gamefaqs or GAF were polled and people took those polls seriously

But then we have no news to twist into making the 3DS look doomed!

6500 people is a pretty good sample for a certain demographic(in this case core gamers), market research usually doesn't poll more than a few hundred at best.

It's still important to note the demographic of the poll:
- 93.5% male, 6.5% female
Age breakdown:
004.gif

Of course, Iwata has admitted that adoption thus far has been "mostly young males", so it is useful to an extent.

Ok, so the sample size might be large enough but using a single site's polls for your ENTIRE sample is still nonsense. A quick look at today's Gamefaqs poll and it has 37,000 votes. Now unless a large number of users are deleting their cookies and re-voting (if that even works) then it should be even more indicative of "core games" views and we all know it isn't

I agree with you here, the problem with this poll isn't the amount of people asked, but that the demographic is too specific and as such only reliable for a rather limited group of people. It's not indicative of what the 3DS is going to sell.

They aren't claiming that their poll is representative, though. They specifically asked their readers what they think of the 3DS and they are selling the article accordingly.

Any chance of Dragon Quest X releasing this year?

If Wii ends 2011 ahead of PS3 I'll be jailed. Christmas always punches Sony down, lol. Not fair, for real.

No fault on 4Gamer's then, just the people overinterpreting it.

SE is going to announce DQX together with a first trailer at TGS, if they aren't planning on a surprise release (they most probably aren't) the chances of a DQX release this year are very, very, very slim.

I'd say it's impossible for DQX to make it out in 2011 at this point.

Considering we're just getting the first footage of DQX with the DQ Wii Collection coming out this September and considering the DQ Collection itself, it's safe to say DQX won't come out until 2012 imo.

Yeah I think it'll come out in 2012, won't be surprised if it comes out in 2013 though.

By 2013 the wii will be dead and buried. I know they have released DQ on a console after it's succesor was out but i doubt they died off as fast as the wii is/will.

Seems like a silly move to be releasing a DQ game on the wii in 2013.
