Are you guys saying that Resident Evil did very poorly, as in not making money this gen? Didnt the ports of 4,5 an 6, and RE:HD sell nearly 3 million copies in total? Is it delusional to think that the franchise did good overall this gen?

RE7's not doing very well by the general metric of RE, and its undershooting forecasts something fierce, and the Gold release isn't likely to get it near its additional 2mil target for this FY. Game reviewed well but it was still met with a divisive response and ~40-50% of your RE5/6 audience didn't show up.

The remaster releases at 20$-30$ aren't going to be lighting your revenue stream on fire. They sold great, but they are also not making you a ton of money even for their minimal investment requirements, so the RoI is going to be low (for equally low investment).

Its kind of hard to look at this situation and consider it "great" in any capacity.

Port is always small cost small gain venture. The biggest thing will always be the new big Numbered title and in the case of RE, 7 dissapoint and unless 8 can come out to stop this decline, the franchise will remain in threat.

It wouldn't be delusional to think the franchise is a bit stable right now.

But it's delusional to think that this result is near anything capcom expected or wanted.

And then, a couple months ago, they announced plans to sign off their IPs to much more prominent partners, though presumably as a licensor instead of as a publisher this go around, which gets them better games, but a smaller part of the profits. That said, if they actually got good partners (they wouldn’t say who), it would still be a notable step up. But again, we really don’t 100% know if it’s licensor vs publisher or if they’re partnered with anyone good yet, and we still don’t know what their 500-700+ internal mobile staff are doing right now.

This is the number of a full blown AAA studio. What the hell have they been working on?

Hypothetically mobile games for Mega Man, Monster Hunter, and Sengoku Basara that should be out by the end of March.

I'm just thinking... So they delayed it right? I can't find the latest press release (Just the one below). I'm noticing they planned to release those games by the end of March 2017. No wonder their investors were so impatient and disappointed recently with the, "When will Capcom experience real growth in mobile?"

Under the new organization, Capcom plans to release four titles in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017, including popular brands such as "Monster Hunter", "Sengoku BASARA", and "Mega Man".

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e160401.html

Edit: Hahaha what if the announcement for something about Mega Man in December is actually about the mobile game? People here are going to be so let down after what they went through TGS. lol

The Mega Man title will probably be announced during the 30th Anniversary December event, they hinted at that during TGS. Already expecting the backlash and thousands of dislikes for the reveal video...

But seriously, who is doing worse with mobile production. Level 5 or Capcom? Both are having big troubles releasing their mobile titles and their products for dedicated devices aren't exactly doing great too.

This is a good demonstration of why the PS3 will struggle to match the PS4. The PS3 had its biggest SW sales by far in years 6, 7 and 8. It's hard to see PS4 matching that, not impossible but unlikely IMO.

Principate

Saint Titanfall
the first thing I saw about the series was an ingame-pic about a twintails girl and a blonde girl from the game doing xxx stuffs that my friend sent me,no kidding
I mean technically that stuff makes up like less than 1% of the story and the didn't really want that stuff in it but felt they need it to sell the story which is once they got popular they ditch it in all future written works and versions of the story.

But yeah there's certainly a few weird porn scenarios in there but it's all done for "serious" reasons.

SMO seems to be ramping up quite a bit on amazon. Took over first place from MHW and GTS, and also has SKUs at 17th and 22th.

You are completely ignoring digital though. With digital sales it is pretty even with DQVIII. Sure still decent bit behind IX but IX is second best selling third party game of all time in Japan (behind MHP3). I don't think it's catastrophe not to match it especially considering how pretty much every franchise in Japan has seen decline from those days.
Mainline DQ games still selling 3M+ is surely a good sign for SE, it means DQ hasn't lost its special luster in Japan (unlike Final Fantasy).
The only doubt I have for DQXI is on how many buyers purchased both the PS4 version and 3DS version.
DQXI is the first mainline DQ that pushed two separate version out at the same time, a high number of doubledippers may mask some slight decline.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

There is a decline even with no doubledippers considering how much the last main titles where able to sell. DQ wouldnt be in a much different spot than FF if they would have gone PS only with the IP....the last Sony system big enough for a +3m seller was the PSP.

Not saying that FF would sell as much - but they havent been catering to a large portion of the audience with the mainseries for a while. If they had tried something like they do now with the Pocket Edition on past popular system like DS, PSP, Wii or 3DS they probably would have reach higher sales as well.

It's cool to follow the pre-release of SMO but in reality we all know it's going to be the best selling Mario 3D game, so there's no mystery there.

It's more interesting to watch MHW getting single digit updates.

Eh, is there some source I missed that it sold 600-800k digital to get anywhere near IX? Last I'd read there were only Famitsu digital estimates at 200k between both versions?

But anyway yes I honestly believe giving both versions the same title is borderline lying. It's two completely separate games with possibly zero assets in common, just story. It's a game and a full overhaul remake of the same game. Of course a serious fan would get both.

Not matching DQIX isn't a problem.
DQIX is the second best selling non-Nintendo game ever in Japan.
A DQ game selling notably lower than 3M however is a problem.
3M isn't a random threshold but a rough minimum of what mainline DQ games usually have sold in Japan since Dragon Quest III (1988).

Mainline Dragon Quest total shipment in Japan:

[FC] Dragon Quest: 1.50M
[FC] Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line: 2.41M
[FC] Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation: 3.77M
[FC] Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen: 3.04M
[SFC] Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride: 2.79M
[SFC] Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation: 3.19M
[PS1] Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past: 4.14M
[PS2] Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King: 3.75M
[NDS] Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies: 4.40M

But selling a well over a million less than the previous game isn't a 'slight decline' either. Sure it may have at least 'hit series baseline' or whatever, but it's still well down from the last three entries (way down on the last one), despite releasing two very different versions on the same day.

RE7 failing forecasts while re-releases of old games which bring in less revenue in comparison does not make it a "great success" for Capcom.

The re-releases were successful I have no problem with that.

RE7 not making its forecast and even doing worse currently this financial year? I wouldn't call it a success for Capcom.

Combining both? No way would I call it a "great success" for Capcom.
Fair enough, i see what you mean.

I'm not sure if selling nearly 3 million copies (correct me if i'm wrong) at those prices are exactly small gains. All is relative of course, but still.

But fair enough to not call the overall perfomance for great if we consider that RE7 sold less than expected, i agree to that, but i dont think its fair to say that its delusional when looking at how much all the different games sold in total.

MH4 selling less than MHP3 isn't a problem nor a surprise (I take this example cause MHP3 is the best selling non-Nintendo game ever in Japan).
A 30 years old series still selling 3M+ for each mainline game is a good sign because there is no guarantee that a franchise that hit big sales in the (distant) past nowadays can still match those lofty sales (case in point Final Fantasy).
Hitting a historical 'series baseline' is very important because it shows the state of health of a franchise.

I don't think so, not yet.
Meant DQIX, of course.
Fixed.

When we think DQIX DS is 14th and Monster Hunter Freedom 3 PSP 11th...damn nintendo, share! lol
That's the reason I refrain to write "best selling third-party game" and instead write "non-Nintendo" since in the Top 60 best-selling games ever in Japan the only first-party games present are from Nintendo (I include Pokemon Co. since it make sense).
Nintendo is the elephant in the room when talking about the japanese dedicated videogame industry.
Of the 44 games that sold 3 million units or more in Japan since 1983 (the real beginning of the japanese console industry), 30 are from Nintendo (again I include Pokémon Co.).
The rest 14 games are from 4 third-party publishers (Square, Enix, Capcom, Level-5) based on their utmost strongest franchise (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter and Yo-kai Watch).

I'm out of the loop here. What would have been better?

The new game for sure. It's what most people would prefer, I think. It's also a multiplat release and not just an old port.

I would like a port more just because I don't really care about the other characters besides BB, but I'm still happy for the effort.

Will Nintendo release a new 2D Mario game in 2018?I think it could be a big 2018 title for them

I'd be interested to see if they keep or drop the "New Super Mario Bros" branding. With Odyssey coming, people who would normally throw shade at the "New" Series for taking the place of a proper 3D Mario will be placated, and I think it's really only in communities like GAF that the "New" series has received a stigma as a sterile series.

Mario Maker Switch is more likely in my opinion.

I think a reboot for the 2D series with a different brand name would be good also, something like Super Mario World
