I don't know how much titles with PS3 versions can count for Vita, but SAO, Digimon and Madoka Magica certainly count, since they're exclusive to the platform.

If I'm not mistaking myself when MH4 launched someone posted on Media create sales thread all the historical data of previous first week records of third parties games on Nintendo consoles, and iirc MH4 was up there.

With the Vira getting this many exclusives , I really hope we will see a lot less PSP - Vita releases. Ideally I would like to see more separation with the PS3 and Vita, as I think the Vita is an after thought , for the PS3 - Vita multiplatform releases.

Vira exclusives will make people buy the Vita.

At launch, no. LTD, possibly. It's already increasing.

Publishers are convinced, all they need to do is take a look at the best selling games on the platform, Persona 4 and Senran Kagura are in the top 10, and one of the few to cross 150k.

I feel like the smartest move for Taiko would have been Wii/Wii U multiplatform to reduce risk by still serving the established audience, much like what many companies are doing for PSP/Vita or PS3/Vita. I'm a little surprised we didn't see 3DS or Vita games in the franchise this year either.

While this is more of a worldwide topic, I'd like to take a moment to discuss the Vita conundrum.

So in the US, the Vita did 70-75K in November. I'm not under the impression it's doing much better in Europe. I honestly have issues seeing it staying on the shelves of anything but specialty stores after Fall 2014, if it even lasts that long. There's also basically zero non-indie support from Western publishers for the platform, and no real signs that's going to change soon. Sony has no major internal developed Western games for the platform either, and the Japanese titles it is getting also aren't the type that are likely to sell Vitas in the West.

However, in Japan we have a lot of titles announced for the first half of 2014, Phantasy Star Nova and P4D announced for the Fall, and even a Digimon game announced for 2015, so it seems that Japanese publishers aren't intending on giving up on it especially soon.

What does Sony do at this point?

1.) Just wait it out until the platform dies everywhere while trying to salvage what they can of the Japanese audience over to the PS4?
2.) Try to start moving to a new platform that's more like a smart device (possibly even with an Android operating system, and ideally with as little R&D cost as possible since this isn't going to sell a lot), even if the Vita is still semi-alive in Japan?
3.) Something else?

I mean they could basically sunset the whole operation and just let it live a few extra years in one region like the PSP did, since it's only relevant in one region. However, if they still want whatever audience they're starting to pick up in Japan, I kind of feel they need something that A.) is cheap enough that you could conceivably just launch it in one region and sell it solely through web stores or whatever in the others (if you even bother that much) and B.) is still a portable that fits the needs of the local Japanese market both from a customer and developer perspective.

While I agree J titles aren't going to move vitas at this point in time(More due to a loss of momentum than anything), aren't japanese games pretty much the reason to buy a 3ds even in the west? I mean I don't exactly see huge western support for the 3ds.

Pretty sure that trying to move the audience to the PS4 is their best bet: the audience for the system is going to be most congruent with that of the Vita.

That said, I would imagine that mobile is the future for their handheld business.

I remember reading that the character artist/designer is actually a hentai artist, is that true?

I think it'll stay on shelves as it takes up about as much space as a PS4 accessory. The software selection will dwindle further, but more people will just transition to digital.

I also think it'll be bundled with the PS4 for a small increase in price once they have enough stock to test the waters.

I can't see 'em killing it early, no matter how dire things are. It's not as if it's taking up a huge amount of time or resources at the moment.

So what you're basically saying is they should make a Playstation Phone?

Would fit all those factors. Would be cheap enough through a contract plan. Would eliminate one of the biggest things that have led to the downward trend of handhelds and that is people not wanting to carrying extra devices. Would certainly be big in Japan where the Xperia line is one of the best selling phones.

As for your point on no western support, that is also true about the 3DS. The only reason the 3DS is successful is because of the quantity and quality of output Nintendo is putting out there. There have been almost no western retail handheld games of note, certainly nothing that could be considered a system seller.

It's a product from Aniplex which is owned by SMEJ.

Doesn't really matter for platforms though. Aniplex and A-1 are also making the Magi anime, and the games are on 3DS.

Uh no I don't think so, his first works were on light novel (Durarara and another I forgot) and he had his own manga Yozakura Quartet and was hired by Atlus for the character design of the Devil Survivor series.

I didn't want any pics lol. Just wanted to know if that was true. Digimon is an anime targeted towards kids, so I found that art and the choice in artist to be weird, and would have been weirder if that was true.

As far as I know, Bandai's been targeting a wider audience since the series first became popular. Drama CDs are aimed at hardcore anime nuts who like to pair up the characters, Tamers had somewhat serious sci-fi stuff due to the writer. There's also multiple Digimon products aimed at those that grew up with the show and are now much older.

Well, I was thinking more of a tablet with buttons or something along those lines since I feel the goal here is to make something that's like a Vita, but costs very little to make/develop, and also can run as many games as possible given how many Japanese developers are heading toward mobile.

Basically if it could accept phone games natively and also potentially sell more expensive software that came on memory cards from stores like current Vita games do.

I think there's kind of a difference between killing something early and putting out a new product while the old one fades away.

I mean the iPad 3 was replaced six months after it came out, and for a more direct comparison, the iPod has basically been phased out even though it's still available for sale in favor of phones and tablets.

Very curious choice. One would think that the 3DS is a better choice for a game aimed at kids but who knows what their reasoning is.

The two Digimon games on PSP weren't exactly aimed at kids. One is a full on nostalgia bomb, and the other is a re-imagining of a nearly 15 year old game.
 
Don't forget that Kancolle is coming to Vita; it's like the niche hardcore analogue to PADZ. Which seems like the general demographic Vita is headed towards to me, personally...

Well, I don't think we have a reliable source of information, but I think the PSVita is doing better in EU than US (is bad anyway, but not that bad). I think Sony said those Megapacks helped through the summer, they've done some advertising (little, but some) and we've seen Vita games sales rising up to mid 20s when there were some of those Vita-bomba sales.

And in the PS4 sales record Sony said the week ended at December 1st they sold 7000 consoles only in Spain.

Well, we would see. With Vita raw power, I think it could have a fairly long life (longer than the 3DS, imo). We don't know what could happen with Android in 5 years. What if Samsung makes their own OS? What if Sony Xperia sales didn't improve as Sony wants (though that division is becoming healthier, for what we've seen in last reports). The Android market is imho rather unpredictable.

Well, if they followed the "smartphone route" you are saying, they could release a more traditional version in Japan (where handhelds sell better) + Sony store / Amazon, other online retailers to spent less money in distribution costs in the West.

The only reason I can see there wasn't a PS3 version is because of PS4. It doesn't make sense building an audience at PS3 now. After Wii U version low sales there could be an entry on PS4.

There is secrecy lately with initial shipments for new launches. Maybe something will see the light close to release.

But we have amazon to the rescue. How long did it take for preorders to stop? Vita TV took a few hours, it will be huge.

I would love to hear a solid business case for a dedicated handheld as well. At best, we are going to get half-baked things like Shield, with Nvidia's paltry $10 million in hardware R&D and zero investment in games.

And unless Sony is planning to make an iOS/itunes or Android/Play ecosystem of their own, they will never regain that market.

Japan seems to be a bit behind the curve on this one, as smartphone penetration is only 26% (from an earlier post). So look for the Japanese handheld market to follow the euro and american markets soon.
PSM was meant to get around that problem. It's rollout has been super slow though.
