Analysis More People Are Playing Left 4 Dead 2 Than Back 4 Blood

Steam numbers show Turtle Rock’s latest project losing out to its 12-year-old predecessor

one of the best of all time. b4b is a pale shadow compared to this game.

i wish valve would remaster it for consoles. id drop back 4 blood today and hop back on to l4d2 like i never stopped. but as it is now, back 4 blood is the only way for me to scratch my first person horde shooter itch on consoles (vermintide 2 is mostly melee, and WWZ and zombie army 4 are third person)

good, my room mate likes the card system, but to me would rather have a game that has more character and charm. Feels like they restrained from making the characters more like well characters. Like L4D2 had ellis, coach, rochelle and nick and all of them were really cool interesting characters even if a little derivative for the time.

These new ones seems like developer doesn't want to Russell feathers, so he made them generic as fuck. The only guy that is somewhat interesting is the conspiracy guy. It tries to be as PC as it can.

Gamepass. That’s why lol. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Try harder Kotaku

You know steam is larger than Xbox right? Larger than 20 Million GAMEPASS subs, and that l4d has sold like a fuck tone of copies, and has had a fan base for longer than anything?

The game was played a good amount during the beta on steam, people prefer l4d has little to do with gamepass as gamepass on PC is so insignificant number wise compared to steam.

Who in their right mind paid $60 for B4B rather than paying for a month of Game Pass? Clickbaity as fuck

Do you know this game was literally on sale on GMG for like $50? On preorder and after launch? I think a ton of people were turned off by the beta. steam and l4d is was larger than any game on gamepass in it's height.

I am enjoying Back 4 Blood on gamepass. For what it does, it does good and thats killing zombies/aliens whatever. Could it have been better, more unique? Ofc it could. Is the steam price too high? yes, do not buy it at full price and its the reason why steam numbers are low. I'd say it's a 7/10 kind of game. Highly recommended if you get it on gamepass and have friends or wait a few more months and the steam price will drop significantly.

The thing that kept me coming back to L4D2 was the PVP. Timing a well executed Boomer/Smoker/Jockey combo was so immensely satisfying.

I've heard that B4B doesn't have campaign PVP which is just ludicrous if you ask me.

Who cares. Kotaku is shit. It's a $2 game that everyone on Steam owns and is popular for good reason.

Vs a $60 game on Steam and one that doesn't include the crossplay numbers from PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows/PC.

Like this article only exists to get the haters to hate share the link for clicks/impressions.

It's fine if you don't like b4b or like l4d2 more (I'm probably one of those too), but the constant negativity is so draining

60 dollars, 50 dollars, it's still not the 10 dollars that a month of GP PC costs, or hell, 1 dollar trial if that's still a thing.

I'm not saying that one game is better than the other, I'm saying that comparing the two player counts is retarded. The Steam player count for B4B is going to be severely gimped by the game being on GP - which wasn't a thing when L4D2 launched - and comparing it to a game that's been on sale for 11 years for literally two dollars is just dumb.

I'm saying everyone who has been a steam user and owns l4d which is a lot know of Turtle rock and have been asking for another L4D for over 10 years. Then they see this coming from the original people who did l4d, and it's literally being advertised as "From the people who brought you L4D". So no, it has more to do with tons of people having access to the beta, being turned off, and seeing it's price $60 which is not what l4D launched at.

It's more of a ton of people are disappointed at what was suppose to be a l4d successor. Which B4B is clearly not.

Sure, but what you and I are saying aren't mutually exclusive. What you wrote is true and yet it's still stupid to look at the Steam numbers when the game's prominently featured as a day-one-on-Game-Pass game. No way in hell I'd pay anywhere near $50 to "own" B4B when I already have access to it, so I don't count as a statistic. My point is we need the total player count to say anything worthwhile, which I'm pretty sure we don't have access to.

No it is you who is not using logical thinking. How many subs are there for gamepass total? We now now its around 20 Million right? How many copies of l4d and l4d2 are there sold? In 2012 it was stated they had over 12 million in sales within the franchise. In 2012?

SO how many do you think there are now, and now that they have combined both games as a package deal on steam? More people because of the price and how heavily discounted it was for almost every steam sale owns this game. Even with back4blood being available on gamepass, the sheer amount of owners of l4d out numbers gamepass subscribers.

ANd the fact that this game is free on gamepass should show larger concurrent players. But a game thats almost over 10 years old now has more players? How is that not adding up?

Steam owners of l4d outstrip total amount of people who have gamepass Im pretty confident in that.

So your basically saying people on pc would rather buy a game on steam than play it for next to nothing on gamepass?
ok

yES, BUT your not getting it for nothing? You are paying 10-15$ a month. L4D can be had for like less than $5. ANd there are more people who have steam and own left 4 dead than there are PC people who have gamepass and probably console as well.

I don't inow about the others, but personally, I prefer l4d2 just because you can mod this game to death (lol?). And I don't see Warner Bros., A big corporation allowing this in their game in the future.

Which part of what I've said goes against any of this? What are you disagreeing on..?

Where are you seeing the TOTAL B4B concurrent players and not just the Steam figure?

B4B is a ton of fun. I've had over a decade worth of fun with the originals, I'll play the new one into the ground. No reason to be stuck in the past here.

Ok. So the figures don’t reflect people playing the game on pc gamepass?

Maybe people want to own their games instead of renting them?

Glad L4D is still kicking it.

I can see it. I tried B4B because i heard it was like L4D. It was OK, but it doesn't feel like L4D at all IMO and it definitely just gave me the urge to play L4D.

correct the entire point is more people are on l4d when there was a ton of people on the beta on steam.

Not saying people are not playing this on Xbox. But the article in question is specifically talking about pc aka steam. I highly doubt there is a large amount of pc people playing via pc game pass. As up to last minute it was added to pc game pass. Which should probably be indicative of overall buzz on pc coming off of beta. I believe there were steam records it had for amount of activity on steam. But here we are and a 13 year old game has more activity.

L4D2 is one of my favorite games of all time but B4B is not too bad, at least the little I have played of it. The lack of mods will hurt its longevity but if you have gamepass it is worth checking out. Not worth getting gamepass just for it though.

Back 4 Blood is okay. I think people just wanted more L4D which it delivers in an off brand, less interesting fashion. The problem is that they had to "modernize" the game play loop with a rogue lite card system and loot. And while that's not bad on its' face, the acts are mostly 9-10 levels long which is just way too much of a time sink. L4D acts were 4 levels long and could be completed in a brief gaming session. I'd like to play more Back 4 Blood but I don't want to invest that much time in a single setting.

p.s. L4D > L4D2
p.p.s. No Mercy > all

To me this is what is a huge turn off. I hated this same system in Gears.

I thought it was amusing how TRS was like, "This ISN'T L4D", but the game feels very much like a Great Value L4D. Even with the B4B related mechanics. I honestly thought it was sad that they didn't just build off of L4D, and improve everywhere they could to make it an improved experience overall. The end result just felt very... uninspired to me. Almost rushed and passionless.

I'm currently on the last level of the campaign, once done I plan on uninstalling it, and will probably never touch it again. The game isn't bad IMO, it just isn't great. I find myself being excited about playing with pals, more so than just experiencing the game. I actually think there are a lot of other titles out there that just.... do it better IMO.

They could definitely support it and improve the experience overall, I'm curious to see if they'll do just that overtime.

No sure I get it. Steam has a freaking huge amount of user base, more than any Gamepass could dream of.

You sure this has nothing to do with the game itself? I mean, the beta made a real bad impression. If this game is no better than World War Z, which is a mid-low tier game to begin with(the stupid grind and weapon grind kills any fun on it), then the chances of beating L4D are stupidly low.

Lot of dumb hate for B4B here, dunno why, don't care. Playing it almost every day since its release thanks to gamepass, this thread looks like hatemongering crap to me.

I have B4B on my Series X via Game Pass and I've only fiddled around with the shooting range. I just can't bring myself to play. Also I don't have a mic so that may cause some issues. Guess I need to make some online friends. Anyway, ultimately, B4B doesn't have mod support so I don't see this lasting long on the PC scene.

Steam exclusive vs not Steam exclusive. Still, if people are still playing this in 10 months, never mind 10 years, I will be surprised.

its hard to beat l4d2 after all, especially with how cheap it goes these days and all the mods available.
No nonsense bloat like a lot of coop horde shooters these days either, just get in on a level and have fun without worries about cards, skills or any of that bullshit.

Wait, b4b is on gamepass pc? Damn. Didn't know this. I'll play then. Thanks kotaku lol

Those numbers are not bad at all, or at least at the moment, because the game is available on epic games store too, and then gamepass. Even if it dies on pc, there is crossplay with consoles. That will save them until it lasts.

L4d sold gangbusters already, and is a valve game, so it isn't really a good comparison.

I've had L4D2 for close to 10 years on Steam, but recently played through all the acts from the original game. Enjoyed my time with it and I ended up with good groups. Even had a fellow newbie with me.

It seems I always used to get stuck on the final mission of act 1 where you have to fill the car with gas. I heard online was the way to play this game, but I could never do it with a group of other humans (even on normal difficulty). I had to do that one on single player.

Glad it's doing well I had loads of fun.

Played through the campaign with some friends, thought it was pretty damn good. Seems like every build is legit.

Shame its flopping, but its not to the level that L4D2 was so i dunno.
Did they not announce 6 million players?
