NeoGAF Games of the Year 2011 Awards (Up: bunch of extra data, check it out!)

If none of the games on your GotY list had dinosaurs in it, ask yourself: does it really count?

Look at this fuckin' amazing screenshot. If Dark Souls doesn't have a single triceratops in it, is it really as hardcore as this game?[/QUOTE]

It comes close?

Make it to Lost Izalith. You'll regret the day you asked if Dark Souls had dinosaurs in it.

Downloaded the full statistics file and kinda feel like commenting on the positions of the games I voted for:

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution:
-> 4. ; 1206 points; [360][PS3][PC]
So is it now 3. or 4. "officially"?

2. Portal 2:
-> 1. ; 2114 points; [360][PS3][PC]
Well can't disagree with that.

3. LittleBigPlanet 2:
-> 22. ; 219 points; [PS3]
I'm glad it placed that high, almost top20.

4. MotorStorm: Apocalypse:
-> 71. ; 39 points; [PS3]
Ok this should really have been ranked higher.. underrated just like MS:pR. Also, it actually has enough points to be on the top5 racer genre list in the OP yet it isn't?

5. Dead Space 2:
-> 10. ; 523 points; [360][PS3][PC]
This is pretty much the surprise of the top10 list IMO. Did not expect this and it was even released in January. I don't think there is much talk about it but yet it had a long-term impact on people.

6. Yakuza 4:
-> 30. ; 163 points; [PS3]
Very nice ranking, quite surprising as well actually.

7. Killzone 3:
-> 42. ; 114 points; [PS3]
Ranked lower than I expected. It's not even in the top5 FPS list, that's kinda mean.

8. Mass Effect 2:
-> 51. ; 77 points; [PS3]
Obviously this couldn't place anywhere high. I also though about putting it into the honorable mention list would be better fitting for a re-release, but I just had to acknowledge that I spend a lot of time on this game last year.

9. The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut:
-> 169. ; 5 points; [PS3]
You guys suck and don't know fun games (ok I guess that's what the Wii owners said last time)!!
Also, it shows up two times because I was the only one using the correct name!
328. [PS3] The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut (Sega, Horror) = 1 point

10. White Knight Chronicles II:
-> 279. ; 2 points; [PS3]
:( ... I'm still playing the revised version of the first game within WKC2 and it's growing on me.. in retrospect I would even place it higher on my vote. It's really good apart from the story etc., feels just like a "classic" JRPG with exploration, cities etc. Just in HD and with modern traits like the combat system etc.

Would have loved to somehow put Resistance 3, Alice: Madness Returns, Limbo, Eufloria and Stacking in there but there was just no place/haven't played them long enough yet. Though I'm very glad about about the relatively high placement of the first two.
btw there is the [PS3] tag missing for Eufloria.

Bulletstorm has a giant, controllable, mechanical dinosaur weapon. Actually, nevermind, Dark Souls still wins because
you can practically turn into a dragon
. Wait, is this about a triceratops?

Anyway, that hipster list is great. I think I now know every person who mentioned Arcana Heart 3.

OK, now I'm intrigued in this, despite the fact it neither comes out of lava and isn't got rib teeth down its belly.

Nimbus isn't on the overall results list despite my vote? SCANDAL

love the compatibility stuff Durante, much appreciated. the hipster one is especially cool. recognize most the folks on mine from various indie and steam threads.

Well..

The winner of the "most attuned poster of 2011" award is Refreshment.01 with a similarity score of 75529.

The winner of the "most eclectic taste of 2011" award is GhaleonQ with a total similarity score of 1018.

So I guess your adjustment to the hivemind is above average. Whether that's good or not is for you to decide :p

Awesome, need mean and SD now so I can figure out what percentile my 8486 score is at.

Only reason I voted this year was for this info so thanks again for the effort. And I guess it's pretty neat to see that my niche-ass list ended up on so many other people's lists too.

Went back to look at my list and it's not so surprising to see Deus ex near the top. :) It seems like it did make a strong impression on a lot of people, despite being released in august and with average level of hype at best. Would of loved to see KOF XIII win best FG over MK, but time will eventually take care of that imo. It is absolutely the superior game from a mechanic and design standpoint, not looking at the graphics or the extra content or lack of or even online play. :p

Portal 2, I'm not sure would have made my top 20 list. I just wasn't impressed at all with that game.

You're my highest scoring match on GAF for gaming tastes. But I already kinda figured that out over time.

Maybe we're related.
High five! For the record I always thought you were a cool dude, I guess now there's hard math behind why.

Bit late on this response, but:

That's not really want I was trying to say, so perhaps calling them evolutionary branches isn't the best language to use. I know Farmville and the like have their basis in MMORPGs, but you wouldn't say they were in the tradition of MMORPGs and the MUDs that they sprang from.

Sure, but it's still part of a pretty full continuum. Cityville isn't an exploratory, class-based Diku, certainly, but there are F2P games everywhere on the scale between it and World of Warcraft, with everything from Echo Bazaar to Maple Story to Puzzle Pirates filling up that space. The same's true on mobile, especially now that we're seeing more and more PC indies releasing iOS versions and vice versa. Is World of Goo or Frozen Synapse or Legend of Grimrock a GAF-style game mechanically? Does that answer change for any of them if they were iOS-exclusive instead of PC/iOS?

If you include game mechanics as part of aesthetics then I agree. I don't think that's too farm removed from what I was saying.

I don't really here. There's a long, pretty consistent history of GAF as a collective entity failing to put much heat behind mechanically "hardcore" titles with undesirable aesthetics and with responding to mechanically similar games differently based solely on their presentation.

heh wtf, dragon pass was rereleased?

Hey, there's plenty of good crazy PC stuff out there. Simulation stuff got totally ignored, but a few other genres did okay; The Witcher 2, Minecraft, Terraria, TOR, Frozen Synapse, Binding of Isaac, and Spacechem all did quite well. Even something that was a low tier indie and didn't launch on any distribution system (To The Moon) showed up pretty well. Even a few mods got some votes, so that's cool. I noticed no one voted for Heroes VI, LOL.

Personally I loved reading ballots that had shit I'd never heard of or that were totally out of my wheelhouse.

You should post some of your top games here with little descriptions.

hehe. to the moon would have easily been near the top of my 10 most hated games of 2011 list. really bothered me that people PRETENDED to have enjoyed or liked that. I'm certain they pretended, haha. amazing how such a transparently manipulative and trite story could get so much attention, especially on rps. and there was no mechanics to it, just endlessly mouseclick through a straight path to a ridiculous degree. the ff13 of adventure games. meanwhile the book of unwritten tales, a new beginning, black mirror 3, the next big thing and blackwell deception went unnoticed. classic.

I'll do a little list for you. dur, the titles that first spring to mind aren't too crazy. other than dcs a-10c, frozen synapse and spacechem. omsi omnibus simulator, unity of command, real warfare 2 northern crusades, achtung panzer operation star / steel armor blaze of war, anno 2070, game stock car and super mario 3d land. something like this.

- omsi is just orgasmic. smell it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSupj_qgh3U
- unity of command. a proper wargame, as a small friendly fast playing thing. what.
- real warfare 2 grows out of being just a much better version of the battle mode from total war and into mount & blade with tactical battles.
- achtung panzer improves with the second game. it's still a bit rough here and there, especially the ai. but what a crazy game. steel armor is questionable right now, not sure if it will get more content or what the hell that was. but it's got some achtung panzer in it.
- anno 2070 is anno.
- game stock car. the formula cars released as free downloads after this came out are pretty much the best anything in gmotor2. forget simbin.
- super mario 3d land. best super mario game since sml1.

a bunch of quick mentions; nba2k12, arvoch alliance, take on helicopters, avadon the black fortress, cities in motion, dcs black shark 2, gemini rue, black mirror 3 again, ghost recon shadow wars, off-road drive, men of war vietnam, test drive unlimited 2, pride of nations, fifa12.

Sure, but it's still part of a pretty full continuum.
Fair enough.

Is World of Goo or Frozen Synapse or Legend of Grimrock a GAF-style game mechanically?
No, no, maybe. At least not the type to be voted into the top ten. World of Goo punched above its weight by being a highlight on a still young WiiWare service and it still only managed #19. Even though it's a generally popular and broad genre, you have to go back to 2005 to find a puzzle game in the top 10. Frozen Synapse is #47. You need to be Blizzard to get a strategy game into the top 10. Grimrock looks promising, but for phone games to be consistently in the top ten I think it will need to solve character movement in an action game as well, in a way that Infinity Blade hasn't.

I don't really here. There's a long, pretty consistent history of GAF as a collective entity failing to put much heat behind mechanically "hardcore" titles with undesirable aesthetics and with responding to mechanically similar games differently based solely on their presentation.
Have any examples? I'm sure they exist, but I can't think of any offhand. Apart from the Mario's and Zelda's, stuff like Fable 2, Okami, and Little Big Planet all polled fairly well. Viva Pinata even scored a #10. My view is that mechanics are usually a primary considerarion, but I'm sure there are exceptions. Games like Uncharted are certainly heavy on the aesthetics, but if the same game had point and click puzzles rather than action sequences in between the cut scenes, would it be as popular?

Pleasant, if unexpected. ^_^

No, no, maybe.

This is really the heart of my point, though. There's nothing but platform choice and a (pretty slight) difference in visual aesthetics separating these from "mobile games."

World of Goo punched above its weight by being a highlight on a still young WiiWare service and it still only managed #19.

Well, indie stuff never fares that well in GAF's GOTYs just due to volume; lots more people played Skyrim than Spacechem. Regardless, all these games are generating light on GAF (relatively high-volume threads, lots of mentions in PC-related topics, etc.) That's a very different issue than the sort of "nobody on GAF cares about games of type X" position you're advancing about mobile games.

Have any examples? I'm sure they exist, but I can't think of any offhand. Apart from the Mario's and Zelda's, stuff like Fable 2, Okami, and Little Big Planet all polled fairly well.

Most of that stuff is still well within at least the lagging-indicator realm of "normal" for the industry, though -- Okami's the most fringe in the crowd, I don't even think Fable qualifies as outside the major demographic.

The Wind Waker backlash is kind of the classic example I'd put up of this pattern in motion (though that's a bit too early to account for in pure GAF voting terms.) To actually look at what gets snubbed more recently you have to start diving into stuff that's regularly pegged as "casual" or "kiddie" or "for girls" -- the Sims, Animal Crossing, Wii Sports, etc.

Lots of updates!

All right, I updated the main list to reflect the changes:
- Dark Souls moved ahead of Deus Ex
- Xenoblade moved ahead of Saints Row
- Bastion moved ahead of Gears of War 3

Also updated the scores in the various genre categories. Tactics Ogre is at the top of the strategy heap. Updated the handheld/mobile awards categories along with it, and added in a quote for Tactics Ogre.

Added in the Handheld Platform awards and the Handheld Genre awards.

Updated the Download-Only awards listing.

Added in the voter census at the bottom of post #3.

Last thing to do: Update the "additional awards" section with updated numbers. Probably will end up doing that tomorrow.
