This game was great. People were playing it for fucking ages. I started to get really frustrated at the guy in front of me, he'd play through all different game modes, try again... and again... and again.

You should have kicked him. Seriously, one should have some damn respect. PLaying through anything twice with people behind you is just disgustingly selfish.

This game looks so great. My interest level in the game was at an all-time low before I saw that video, now it's at an all-time high. I just hope the game isn't too short, I really hope it has lots and lots of levels.

The game appears to have a long ways to go. I'd like to see a Spring 06 release date. This gives them enough time to implement a truly DS-centric feature, such as special zones within the levels that utilize the touch screen or mic. I'd also like to see some great 3D boss battles, arena style (ala Wario World), which could take advantage of the DS' 3D features, without pushing it too far.

But really it needs a huge coat of polish. It just looks a little sparse and uninspired.

Doesn't look too bad, but a lot of the levels I've seen look very.. flat! A little too much like he original Mario Bros, and not enough vertical ascent ala Mario 3 and Mario World, or the hills of Yoshi Island.

Fuck that. Not every game needs to utilize all the features of the DS, you know.

Yeah fuck the gimmicks give me some straight up old school mario love damn it!

Was I watching the same video as you guys?

I absolutely LOVE Mario (I have 4 different Mario character bobble heads sitting on my desk and am even wearing a Mario shirt as I type), but this video - if it's any indication of what the final product is going to be - really left me unimpressed.

It's been said before, but there was a powerup on every screen. The level just looked so...barren. Also, were those red circles checkpoints? If so, there were two checkpoints about 10 seconds apart! The quicksand also seemed a little blah...

I still have a lot of faith, but this video didn't do anything to reinforce those feelings. Well, except for old school coin collecting and the return of the fire flower :D

Please PLEASE make this game great, Nintendo. Please.

This looks great :) I really want a DS right now :( I can't decide on the color though (white or turquoise - if you have a picture of this in real life please PM me the picture :)), but I know I'm going to have a DS in a few weeks if things are going to keep up the way they are now :lol

BTW, what were the rings?

the rings are, in co-op/competition mode at least, checkpoints. if mario hits it, then it turns red. if luigi, then obviously it's purple.

The game is really early. Expect a release in 2006.

That was great. More of this, less Mario that takes up the whole screen.

I don't like the enourmous mario thing either. game looks sweet though.

The mechanics seemed tight, though I wasn't impressed by the level design. A bit too sparse, too many coins and too many powerups. The other vid showcased a nice variety of environments tho.

Nintendo needs to have atleast 100 levels in this game.
Lots of levels doesn't make a good game. Rather, I'd like to see Nintendo go back and polish the existing levels and just build from there. Gives us some truly inspired levels with lots of secret warps, areas and items.

when it comes to mario lots of levels make a good game.

What do you know, another great looking DS game. The PSP is going to have a hard time competing with the DS' software lineup this holiday season. Sony should just make the PSP an official porn viewer because there sure aren't any games coming out for it anytime soon. Ouch. :lol

I can't wait to see more of this game. Right now it looks great, but I want to see more from the gameplay perspective. I'm sure Nintendo isn't going to disappoint though.

Yoshi's Island disagrees with you.

Sure, I would have preferred more levels, but the 54 we had added up to a better game than any other Mario title IMO...and lots of others. Not all obviously, probably not even a majority, but a good number.

EDIT: Oops, I have NO idea why I wrote 36, now that probably would be too little!

Mario and the enemies look great. I think the big problem is that the environmental sprites are pretty boring and don't have much style. I bet they fix it up, anyway.

Looks hot. I hope the level designs are as wacked out and inspired as SMB3 though. I don't want something like Mario 64 in 2D. I want crazy, ridiculous, trippy shit, like in SMB3. :)

I played through all three levels available at the demo...

I like it, but I need more levels to determine how good the game really is. It feels sort of like Super Mario Bros. 3 using SSBM mechanics -- and I like that. There are several small details which are nice -- the game uses the SMB3 powerup movement (hit a block on the left, the item moves to the right. Hit it on the right, it moves to the left) and star power (somersaults!). Wall kicks are easy and fun to pull off. Items can be saved -- if you had a mushroom, then grab a fire flower, the mushroom is stored in inventory -- up to three items can be held at a time. Tap the item on the lower screen to activate it.

The game feels good, but it needs more levels at this point. Not sure about the speed of the game yet, either. However, the little I played makes me very hopeful that it will turn out to be fantastic.

Oh, the two player mode is great.

That video got me excited, but I agree with most of the criticism stated in this thread. Too sparse, too many power-ups, not enough variety. Granted, it's a very early demo, and it's probably a mid-2006 release at best, but I have very high expectations for this game and I'd prefer that it disappear until it's close to being ready for release.

If this does turn out to be a mid-2006 release, what are the chances of it having significant connectivity to Mario Revolution. Could be interesting.

Ohhhhhhhhhh shit...........THAT IS HOT.

I WANT NOW.

Plus........THE FLAGPOLE AT THE END!

GOTY (whenever it releases)

I've seen screenshots of later levels and the difficulty will definitely be their with more complex obstacles and enemies. Just think of the magical return of the Hammer Bros. and if we're lucky, tank levels.

This does look awesome. I'm not sure about the 'empty level' comments. The desert levels in SMB3 looked quite empty, so this shouldn't have been a suprise. Guess we'll find out with the final product.

What suprised me was the animation. I hadn't seen a good video of the game before, and the stills look like complete ass. Looks great in motion; love the animation.

Well, SMB3 was on the NES. Graphics and backgrounds have progressed a bit since then...

But I agree completely on the animation. When I first saw those pirhana plants, I nearly shit myself! :O Those things animate incredibly well.

Rumors of warpzones, secret blocks that led to sky levels, and finding every single 1-up block in the game is in part what made Super Mario Brothers so enjoyable. It was truly like playing an adventure game, and I still remember vividly hearing abotu the sky bonus levels when I went to get my hair cut (of all places) and some kid told me about it.

With the Internet, every f'ing secret Nintendo can think up will be posted by some retard with too much time in his ultimate secrets guide. And even more retards will download it, hit every secret block then brag about 100% completion.

:lol

I agree, but these days I don't have the time to replay awesome games like this enough to find all the hidden stuff. I also have a weird mental block in games where, if I look somewhere and miss something, it's marked in my head as searched and it doesn't occur to me to look there again. I'm doing pretty good with donkey kong country 2 at the moment, but typically I get about 90% in games and then hit a guide. Not for bragging rights though, I just like seeing 100% for some reason.

did the co-op gameplay take place in the same levels as the single player gameplay? If so maybe that explains the large number of powerups? 2 people will need twice the power ups to enjoy the game.

Looks fun, but you guys are right about the visuals. It reminds me more of Mario 2 than 3+, and I always thought 2 was the blandest of the bunch. World and Yoshi's Island were so lush and full of character, this is missing that. We'll see.

(nerd alert) Am I the only one who thought it looked awkward that Mario didn't freeze when he grew super? (/nerd alert)

looks excellent! great to see some new footage.

while i agree there's a certain amount of nostalgia, it's worthy nostalgia. i'm hoping there's going to be many new things in the game. and the 2 player-ness sounds great.
