Most people in the area i grew up in from 90's all family's either were farmers, or land cultivators, quarry, contractors. It might be more diverse now because in the past 20 years we had FOrt Drum expand so larger influx of diversity in kids.

But still you go to where I live and still hardly anyone black. Closer you get to Fort Drum the more you see diversity but a lot of them are living on base, or in military housing which is close to Drum.

The main issue is the difference between prejudice and racism. Everyone develops some form of prejudice in their lives. Everyone develops preferences. Everyone perceives stereotypes. Racism is a step beyond that, into actively perpetuating prejudice, or teaching that it's right, or valid. Like another poster said, almost EVERYONE has experienced a scenario as a child where they're put off by the autistic kid, or scared of the man with burns, or uncomfortable with the person of a different race than their own. This shit is natural, it's a young, sheltered mind coming to grips with the uncanny valley. Where the problem stems is people growing up and refining that into "These people are a problem," Racism itself screams "arrested development," to me.

But what it tells me is that the kid lives in an all white neighborhood and goes to an all white school like most little white kids, and the parents don't see this sort of embrace of defacto segregation as "racist" because they don't actually say anything bad about the "others."

My girlfriend's kid (who is more or less a step daughter to me at this point), lives in a very very diverse urban area, and I can tell you she makes absolutely no distinction between anyone based on color. When she plays online video games, most of the time she makes her characters black, and if you ask her why she just says "I think it's pretty." She isn't unaware of what race is, but she sees integration as the norm, because in her life it is. When she traveled to Oklahoma, she asked "Why do all the people look like us?" It made her uncomfortable.

None of which is to say this is because we're the winners of the anti-racist olympics, but just... kids reflect their environment, not just your rhetoric. If you actually believe in diversity you should live it, not just lecture about it. If you send your kid to an all white school because you think that's "the good school," I have news for you...

Similar situation, my kid spent 3 years in childcare with primarily black women, she hugged them everyday and spoke about them at home. One day we are in the metro, we sit next to a black man - suddenly my kid hugs me and says she is afraid of the gentlemen in front of us. Of course I got exactly the same shit 'kids learn it at home' BS from him, but that was not the case - my daughter also changes her mind about what to wear in the span of 5 seconds, that's just how the kids are. They are not the smartest creatures on this planet.
