Set Yourself on Fire is amazing. Someday I'll see Stars. Someday.

If I have my way, Stars will be playing my wedding in Omaha next summer. We're sending them a wedding invite seeing how they're "our band." I took my fiance to a BSS/Stars show on our first date, and we've seen them three times since. Not like they'd actually come to some weird 20-something couple's wedding, but one can always dream.

That would be so awesome if they played.

I'll be at that wedding.

Bell woods, I still stand by the fact that, despite your seemingly impeccable knowledge on the subject, you have the WORST (not to mention most pretentious) taste in music of anyone. ever. well, except Lord Maji, but he is a joke character.

And I'll do my top 10 list tonight.

:lol
your right!

I'm Stampy Mouse The Crazy Cat!

hrmm, that makes no sense... oh well I suck! :D

Sunlandic Twins was all right. I guess it'd make some kind of list, but I don't honestly plan on making a comprehensive one or giving it serious effort.

do it.

plus it will help make the thread somewhat readable.

We'll redefine the meaning of being a wedding crasher, mwahahaha :D

One problem with that plan. None of our friends are single, so your chances of getting lucky in a broom closet are slim to none.

I missed Stars because their show in Portland sold out before I realized they were gonna be here, but I hear they're absolutely amazing live.

Good luck, distantmantra! That would be so damn cool.

I don't have time to get my whole thing ready, so I'm going to post some of my top albums, and uh, maybe other things I'm thinking about adding.

The top albums is gonna look something like this:

Dälek - Absense
Okkervil River - Black-Sheep Boy
Deerhoof - The Runners Four
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Angels of Light - Sing "Other People"
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

I'll add a couple more to make it 10 and add some runner-ups I suppose. I'm an obsessive list maker. I need to let the new Jackie-O Motherfucker stew a bit, though, because I really really liked it my first couple of listens, so that my shake things up...

I think I'm also going to do lists of my top 5 songs for the year, and my top 5 album art/packaging things.

Also, look for a special ode to Shinola, Vol. 1 by Ween as I can't fairly count it as an "album" per se. It rules, though.

The only new albums I listened to this year are Make Believe, Get Behind me Satan, and Chaos & Creation in the Backyard. If I had to rate them, I'd say:

White Stripes- Get Behind Me Satan
Paul McCartney- Chaos and Creation.....
Weezer- Make Believe

I think it's still too early to be doing these lists. That said, I'll try to have one ready soon. Don't really know what it'll look like...this year's been pretty chaotic musically, and nothing really stuck out all that much for me. And there're still some albums I need to hear.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.

8) Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow
Look... I've never heard music like this before. It's loud, raunchy, and most of all... it's rockin'. I wish I was as cool as Lightning Bolt, because this album just does it for me. Hypermagic Mountain... not so much.
Hypermagic Mountain is worth it for "Megaghost" alone. That song destroys.

Heh, I was gonna start bitching about how 2005 kinda blew, but then I start glancing over these lists and I'm seeing a bunch of great stuff that for some reason I thought came out years ago.

My personal ten... well... I have a confession: I just got into music a littler over two years ago, so this year (in particular) I really caught up with the music I missed out on in the eighteen years of my life. So my top albums of this year are... (next year will be 2006 releases exclusively).

3) Radiohead - Kid A
I admit... I had no idea who Radiohead was before 2005. Up until late 2003, I was a total and utter japan-o-fag, and I listen to nothing but L'Arc~en~Ciel, so hearing that these guys made two AMAZING albums that are loved by all around the world... I was a little intimdated. It turns out Kid A sucked me in and never let me out. One of my true favorites.

4) Radiohead - OK Computer
Same story as above.

Y'know, I was just listening to OK Computer again for the first time in a long while, and realized how much the music 'scene' has dropped off since then. There's nothing out right now from this year that even comes close to matching OK Computer or Kid A. Things were going reasonably well in the first couple years of this decade, but since then, it's been all down hill. It's kind of depressing to think about. (Or maybe I'm just full of shit...)

AOTY:

The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree: The third all studio tMG album, and they sound more comfortable here than the previous two. John's lyrics are as awesome as they have always been (standouts include "Pale Green Things", "This Year"). The addition of Erik Friedlander and his string quartet in a couple songs ("Dilaudid" in particular) was great. While the Sunset Tree may not be my favorite tMG album, it is still my favorite of the year...unless by some miracle I actually get a hold of Come, Come to the Sunset Tree (vinyl-only release by tMG recorded in John's home with just him and his guitar. Not sure if its done on a tape cassette deck like his old albums. I am pretty sure his old tape wheel grinding deck was put to rest on the shelf after All Hail West Texas), and if C,CttST is as good as I have heard it to be.

Other favorites:

I am not in front of my music stuff, so I'll probably forget a couple albums that came out this year that I enjoyed...

Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
The Decemberists - Picaresque
British Sea Power - Open Range
Jandek - Glasgow Sunday
M Ward - Transistor Radio
Deerhoof - Runners Four

Semi-relatedly, does anyone know where I can download the leaked Brion-produced version of FA's new album? I've checked the usual torrent sites, but I can't find it. Thanks.

Hmm, you reminded me that I need to add something to my original post.
DO NOT ask for torrents, YSI links, etc. and don't ask for PM's.

If you don't know where to go to download stuff by now, that's your problem. :p

Well, looking back, 2005 wasn't nearly as great as I had thought/hoped, but it was good nonetheless. There defintely weren't that many really strong albums (or at last not as many as I'd anticipated.. there were so many disappointments), but in terms of singles it DESTROYED. Anyway, here are some albums I think deserve mention:

The Orb - okie dokie.
Fave Songs: "Captain Korma," "Kan Kan"

I saw Black Mountain at an in-store here in Seattle early in 2005, got their album signed, good stuff.... but not good enough in my mind to make my top ten.

What kind of music does Black Mountain play? I saw a photograph of them in a magazine and they look like bikers... but one of their mp3s sounded eclectic.

Talk about this has been non-existant, and I don't know why. It is IMO, their best work. I neglected to put them in my "list", but they should definitely be there.

Heard these guys on the radio today, and it was a fun song. Thought about the Faint while hearing it. I bet that's what they (Faint) wanted their last record to sound like.

What did The Futureheads release this year aside from an EP (i LOVE the new song btw)? Are we talking leaks?

Oops, I was thinking their record came out in early 05 but I guess it was late 04. I dunno, I just had heard a lot about these guys and got the record and thought it was pretty bad compared to all the other bands theyre compared to (and that I've enjoyed).

The Futureheads took a few months to grow on me, I'd say that you probably have to see them live to fully appreciate how unique they are.
