It was another strong month for PS5 in the UK, with stock levels up 56% in August compared with July (GfK data)

As a result, Sony’s machine is currently the UK’s best-selling console of the year (so far). The platform moves ahead of Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s hybrid console also enjoyed a sales increase of 4% in August.

Xbox Series S and X sales remained steady last month, but was in third place overall. In total, nearly 125,000 consoles were sold in the UK during August, a rise of 20% over the month before.

However, just under 880,000 consoles have been sold this year, which is a drop of nearly 36% compared with the first eight months of 2021.

In terms of software (digital and physical data from GSD), 1.67 million games were sold in the UK last month, a drop of 10% over August last year and down 3% over July.

The best-selling game of the month was Saints Row. The title from Deep Silver was the best-selling digital game by a large margin, but was No.2 in terms of physical retail releases behind Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Despite having the inferior install base, the open world reboot sold 21% more copies on Xbox platforms.

Outside of Saints Row, the next biggest new game was the PC release of Spider-Man Remastered, which is Sony's fastest-selling PC game so far. Snapping at its heels at No.8 is Two Point Campus from Sega.
This data and chart does not include sales of games bundled with consoles, such as the Horizon Forbidden West PS5 console bundle.

Over in accessories, 547,122 add-on products were sold last month (GfK data), which is a slight drop of 0.7% compared with July, and down 14.5% over August last year.

PlayStation's DualSense controllers continue to do well, with the White and Black versions holding the No.1 and No.2 positions once again. New at No.3 is the Robot White Xbox Wireless Controller, and the Carbon Black version jumped 132 places to No.8. Both controllers had been suffering from supply issues.

Anyone want to assume that the 1.04 ratio for the switch is ~1 so 0.56X = 21k where X is july's sales numbers for PS5 so July was 37.5K and so August was 58.5K?

Yeah Nintendo executives had a total meltdown this morning and ready to commit seppuku. Although Miyamoto is ready to fist fight Jim Ryan.

Nintendo is doomed. Not even Pikachu and all the other games for this year are going to save them… they need a Switch 2 asap.

Woah, slow your horses there Nintendies! I just want a new Switch; Nintendo is certainly not doomed because of UK console sales!

Good for Sony that PS5 finally sells more, would its total sales number be much higher if not for the constraint problem? Maybe, but to be fair, themselves are partially to blame for not meeting the demand in the first place, their potential consumer don't really have much choice other than to buy the other product when PS5 is not available. They really need to get their shit together and make more unit, there are no excuses.

Partially to blame? For what? For a global chip and parts shortage? I think you need to give your head a shake. We have just come out of a global pandemic.

Don't tell me, I wouldn't say partially if not for the pandemic, tell that to those consumer that blame Sony entirely for not meeting the demand.

Anyways good for them they finally able to manage, no hard feeling ok?

Good for PS5 in the UK but globally in 2022 the PS5 trails Switch by 4.4 million to 7.54 million as of June 30th (after 2 calendar year quarters). Switch will extend that lead when we get numbers for the July to September quarter in a couple of months. PS5 has no chance of outselling Switch globally in 2022 however it has a decent chance in 2023.

Really? Covid and the russian aggression against Ukraine have had no impact at all? Well, news to me...

Suffers from extreme PDS
The idea that they did this when a console isn't still available on every shelve in stores is honestly crazy.

I wonder where PS5's sales could be right now if it was never supply constrained.
Switch has been out for over five years. Even supply constrained its embarrassing that Nintendo has been crushing them. Don’t even bother looking at how embarrassing Sony first party software sales is in relation to Nintendo. Switch has 10+ games that have sold more than any first party title on PS4 that has more install base.

Embarrassing? Are you deliberately dumb? The PS5 is supply constrained. You can buy Switch just about anywhere duh.
Nintendo don't have many decent competitors making games on the Switch. Do they have games like GTA, RDR2, COD, Fifa etc? No because most people buy Nintendo consoles for the Nintendo games.

Yeah, this is not something to really praise. The Switch has been out close to five and a half years and the PS5 finally overtook it for this year. Clearly the Switch is a beast but it's been out for close to 6 years now.

It will be interesting to see which one comes out on top by the end of the year. The PS5 will likely outsell the Switch weekly until the holiday season when the Switch will be top dog. Could be down to the wire.

Consider you can only buy it online and only PS Direct here in US. Unlike Switch,Every store and online store has it.

I like seeing sony and Nintendo going toe to toe for 1st place. Who will come out on top this year?
the ps5 took the lead in I think May of last year, switch will most likely pull ahead during the holiday season again, unless things get weirder and something mess up supply even further ps5 will almost certainly take 2023 and 2024

This is good, maybe it'll encourage Nintendo to get a Switch 2 out by next year. I like market competition.
Not even sure it will be a Switch2, who knows, Nintendo are very well known to be new, fresh and original every time a new Hardware is coming out, so I wouldn't give for guaranteed a Switch2. But sure PS5 will gain more and more ground and Nintendo will need to go ahead and release a new Console. Even Wii was supposed to be invincible, but suddenly sales began to decline, more and more, therefore, you never know.

In a few countries PS5 might be on top but not globally, PS5 is already 3.14 million behind after 2 quarters. Switch is likely to sell 21 to 22 million in 2022, here are it's Calendar year sales since it launched (graphs below) compared to PS5. Last year PS5 sold 12.8 million and although this year it should do a bit better i think 14 to 15 million is what it will sell in 2022. 2023 will be the first year that PS5 can realistically be the top selling console because Switch will decline by a few million and PS5 should have better supply.

Nintendo still the market leader

You do realize PS5 sold more than the Switch at first right? Even more than the PS4 which also sold more than the Switch. It was literally due to supply issues that it's now behind both.
Nintendo goes from 20M consoles sold to 100M, to 15M to 100M again. That's their numbers over the past 4 generations. Sony is always a lot more consistent.

Nintendo has like god knows how many more years ahead of Sony in terms of creating and managing their own IPs. Sony doesn't give you 20 years of the same characters. They are always creating and changing their main IPs, depending on what gen they are at. Completely different ways of doing the same business.

Imagine getting Crash Bandicoot now on the PS5 instead of Uncharted, The Last of Us or the new IP Naughty Dog is creating. Or imagine Insomniac still doing Spyro and not evolving.

Clearly you're bothered by this Sony result somehow... but don't worry Nintendo is still doing amazing. Hope you feel better tho.

It's extremely impressive that Sony matches or outsells Nintendo because the PS5's price is 40% more expensive than the Switch. Selling more than Nintendo in units and revenue is insane.

It's like a Ferrari outselling a Toyota in unit sales. Literally unfathomable. One is an afordable mass market product that caters to the masses and the other is a luxury product that targets the higher income consumers.

Dude, lol, there’s a 100 USD difference (less if you count the PS5 digital) between a PS5 and a Switch and a 200.000 USD difference between a Toyota and a Ferrari. What are you on about? The PS5 is a mass market product as much as the Switch.

Nintendo is market leader. You have to have an appealing price AND an appealing product. Nintendo has both in spades. THAT is impressive. UK used to be Sony land. Not anymore. Switch might still sell the most this year once holiday sales hit

Yeah, it's a bit weird but anything rationalisation to make his analogy work I guess.

You could also say that every Nintendo handheld is just as, if not more, successful than Sony home consoles;

Game Boy 118.69 million sold
Game Boy Advance 81.51 million sold
Nintendo DS 154.02 million sold
Nintendo 3DS 75.94 million sold
Nintendo Switch 111.08 million sold

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/hard_soft/

So yeah. Based on that pattern Switch 2 could sell around 80 million units.

Oh...now we're pretending the Switch is a pure handheld console like the Gameboy to fit a narrative. I'm out.

The PS5 disk version makes up most of the sales and availability is $500 compared to the Switch $300 . a 200 difference is huge and $300 is the mass market price, not $500. No Nintendo console could ever sell as well as Sony at $500 ever.

If Nintendo cuts the price to $250 this holidays, the PS5's price would be 2x more expensive than the Switch.

Lol at $500 being mass market price.
