I’m on the fence with this one atm purely because there are so many awesome games coming out in the next few months, but some positive reviews/previews might sway me to jump in - it’s the same with Dragon’s Dogma 2, though the latest footage does look promising.

The gameplay looks fun, but it's hard not to think that this would have been a lot more exciting before Ghost of Tsushima.

That said I didn't like GOT as much as everyone here. If this manages to have more combat variety and better side content I could easily see myself enjoying it more.

What time is it?
Pretty mixed on this. I don't really care about the visuals and that's not really Team Ninja's strong suit. I really enjoyed Nioh/Nioh 2 but Stranger and Paradise and Wo Long didn't click with me. I really don't trust Team Ninja to pull off an open world game. The setting is right up my ally and it does appear this game will not have weapon/armor drops (or maybe that's wishful thinking on my part).

Wow so its a Ghost of Tsushima clone with a fuckin wingsuit

Why should I give a shit about this? lol
Because Japan is a cool setting.
I don't see how someone can look at this and not want to play the shit out of it.
Agreed. Not every game is going to blow their entire budget on cutscenes/grsphics (ex hellblade 2) and have the minimum amount of gameplay.

Looks bad, and another thing people haven’t mentioned is like… why is this an open world game? I don’t see any side activities, or emergent events, or stuff to find and explore and collect… just lots of combat. If they didn’t tell me it was open world I would have no idea and would just assume Souls-like from all the footage. The team has no experience making an open world game and it looks pointless so far.

Today we’re excited to share a new look at the action-packed gameplay of Rise of the Ronin. We at Team Ninja are crafting a liberating open world bristling with tense combat opportunities that are woven together with a complex storyline. Let’s take a new look at freeform traversal options, combat mechanics, and the development of character relationships based on your actions.

Fighting like a Ronin

A variety of weapons are available for battling your enemies. In addition to Team Ninja’s signature swordplay, you can wield Japanese spears and ranged firearms, including foreign pistols.

Hybrid Japanese-western weapons are also options. Use the the flamethrower-like Fire Pipe to roast groups and ignite flammable barrels or wield the bayonet to deflect blades and counter rifle blasts. Choosing your combat style and keeping your enemies’ armaments in mind is key to gaining advantage in battle.

As Team Ninja fans know, timing is key in melee combat. The new trailer showcases a heated battle between swordsmen where stance selection, blocking, and timed parries are critical to defeating foes. You can also wield a versatile Grappling Rope to pull distant enemies in during fights or perform a stealthy takedown on an unaware sentry. Players can also use the rope to launch themselves towards foes and close the gap.

Prepare to use every tool available to overcome the fearsome threats facing our fated Ronin.

Two katana-wielding combatants cross swords.

Traversing Japan

Plenty of choices are available when covering ground in late 19th century Japan. Your grappling rope is useful outside combat to scale rooftops and other heights, allowing you to gain leverage in a flash. Mounting a trusty horse also allows you to gallop across open fields to mission objectives faster.

The ingenious Avicula is one of the traversal options we at Team Ninja are most excited about. This marvel of engineering allows you to instantly deploy a lightweight set of wings, perfect for gliding through the air. Players can sprint across rooftops, grapple to a distant height, and deploy their glider in midair, using the upward momentum to soar through the air. You can adjust your direction, speed, close wings at any moment, and get a stealthy drop on unsuspecting enemies.

A sea side scene. Day break. In the far distance, ships sail towards a nearby port. At the front of the image, a character with the Avicula glider deployed soars towards a nearby island.

Player choice

In addition to choices of combat and traversal styles, players can also impact Rise of the Ronin’s world with their actions during story missions.

At one point in the new trailer, we see the player choose to help a character named Igashichi fight a group of hostile guards. This choice to help establishes a bond between these characters, lets players get to know Igashichi more deeply, and unlocks other game features. You’ll be able to make these choices with additional characters, such as Ryoma Sakamoto highlighted in a previous trailer.

Who you choose to develop a relationship with impacts how the story unfolds. However, there are no disadvantages to bonding with a character at the expense of another. Consider it even more variety for your next playthrough.

Another 'Actual Japanese history' game? How original
The time period this game take place is very interesting and you dont see many game have that same setting.....this time period Japan opens their borders for the first time and you see both Japanese and western buildings and people wearing western cloths in .....its one of my big reasons why this game got me interested.

I'm glad to see actual towns in a game like this.

Having said that, overall this isn't what I was looking for, so probably a pass for me. Graphics aren't everything so that definitely isn't the problem for me, I just don't think I'm interested in this kinda game right now.

You made all these assumptions based on this combat focused trailer? GTFO

It’s nioh mixed with wo long with some horse animations ripped from dynasty warriors, lol. I’m day one, I already know I’ll like it.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
Looks fucking atrocious.

They shouldn’t be allowed to release games that look that bad graphically on a ps5 in 2024

There are games made by a single man that look better
Games by small studios that run circles around this shit, like robocop

Team ninja should be embarrassed

Looks ok gameplay wise. For anyone complaining about Dragon Dogma's graphics....this is half as pretty. I'll probably still get it but man, for a current gen only game, it's looking rough. Some jank here and there but overall it looks like a lot of fun.

I don't understand why they just seem unable to make nice looking games. Their graphics are always so.... rough, angular. Gaudy, even.

It's really hard to put my finger on what but it's culmination of character models, world design, lighting, textures, effects, anti aliasing, UI elements.. everything combined just makes it unpleasant to look at.

Nioh 2 looks pretty good on PC and PS4 initially . After that it's getting worse and worse

It's probably their game engine.
They would be much better off by using some third party, like Unreal, Decima, or Unity.
Anything would be better that the Katana Engine they have now.

Those graphics... oof. The game would look bad even if we were still in the PS4 generation. I get it that the gameplay is where they focused their attention, but it's going to be difficult selling this product to more casual players who want another game like Tsushima.

Team Ninja seem to deliver as always 🙌

Hoping for a PC release sooner rather than later. Otherwise i'll bundle it with the Pro later this year 💪
