Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal delayed to remove "Intimacy Mode" from PS4 version in the West; Steam version is intact

The artistic freedom of simulating the molestation of children. Sure bud.
This rule would also get Fire Emblem Fates, and any game with a Mario 64 face pinching tech demo interactive thing but with ladies, rejected as well, since it's "no touching women" and judging from its implementation in Happy Manager VR (where even looking at a fully clothed obviously adult woman with preset VR angles is too much and had to be completely cut).

It would get any games properly rated through ERSB and PEGI cancelled at the whims of the publisher who already paid so much.
It's implemented in the same way their inconsistent "no jp voices ever" policy was in the ps1/ps2 era, with the same disregard to consumers and consideration for the developer's investment enough to let them know the situation (and how in this case ratings mean jack shit anymore) so they adjust instead of going bankrupt like many before them over inexplicably cancelled releases (Taito USA, Working Designs, etc)

You most likely have a hate boner for games that provide fanservice for heterosexual males (since Bayonetta would never be allowed on Sony platforms under this rule) enough to be fine with all of these shitty business practices and opaque approval processes that change after the fact (sometimes after the release is up for sale, like Super Seducer, an inoffensive game purely purged because gaming journalists asked Sony to remove it because they hate how the developer is a pick up artist in the era of metoo where heterosexual relationships are something unnatural, and then they obliged)

It's less so Senran Kagura and more of the principle of allowing creators to release their games with their intended visions.

I couldn't care less for the Senran Kagura series, but this precedent if it becomes the standard means that:
  • ratings mean jack shit, and things that would net higher ratings (not even AO) will now be banned completely
  • games perfectly fine and approved can be banned if game journalists complain (super seducer)
  • developers will not get any clear message what's going on until they invested all their money on the release and their potential losses are maximized
  • policies are inconsistent (watch dogs 2 has full nudity, and gta v gets away with much worse) and that opaqueness luls developers into a false sense of security
  • developers start getting averse to localizations of any games with potential "problematic" content (meaning games like mother 3 game journalists complain about how it's not localized yet officially, are now in 2018 even less likely than in 2006)
Artistic vision can't exist in a climate where a few complaining about your work CAN lead to it being purged from availability and your revenue streams cut off.

Hopefully Catherine is affected so that Atlus finally supports the PC market. It seems Shin Megami Tensei V on Switch made sense after all.

That sucks. I purchased a PS3, PS Vita and PS4 just for the weeb games. I don't care if they make the PS5 backward compatible with every Playstation disc ever released, this quiet censorship without an explanation makes no sense. Sayonara, Sony.

WOW, that's telling as hell. Can't show a bikini anymore...Nintendo is officially more okay with potential sexual content than Sony. Guess hell is freezing.

Feel free to create a topic about if if you want. I suspect by tomorrow we will be hearing a lot about this new policy also affecting Japanese territory. I honestly though this was only gonna be a western thing.

That game was released on PSVita last year, so I looked at the Japanese amazon reviews; a 3 star review from september last year mentions "mysterious white light" on event cg.

With the happy manager vr game much earlier in the year, their new policies may have been in place longer than we think. Wonder why Catherine was ok, or maybe it was affected and we just don't know it?

welcome to the world in Germany XD

But yeah it is pretty disgusting luckily we still have steam.
Waitaminit, we (Germany) have had (videogame-)problems with too much violence (it got better over the years, hell, the last Mortal Kombat got an official uncut german release!) and Nazis, but sexy stuff, as long as it was not outright porn and rated 16+/18+ was never a bad thing. Hey, if I recall correctly we even got rid of the "swastika in games"-ban this year and every new wolfenstein won't have to be mangled (even if the last three iterations did an okay job).

we still have seen also with sexy games.

Omega Labyrinth Z

These are most recent examples. Also Zombie games are a huge no go. I wonder if we actually even get Dying light since part pne was put on the index shortly after release.

Google says "OLZ --> sexualization of minors"... so, yeah, you are right, there is a "fiiiine" line where also german boards will take "sexy stuff" into account.
Gal Gun 2 has a similar problem, I believe.

Zombies... yeah... as I said... violence (against human like creatures... for example zombies) was a long time problem for videogames that wanted a "Freigabe" in Germany. The Dead Island games also never came out here. But the USK has softened its stance since MKX and Wolfenstein New Order, it seems.

But, trying not to go too off topic, back to sexy stuff, and yeah, there were games that were banned/indiziert for sexual content, but it seems, only when this content bordered on illegal stuff.

They are 18 in the West and this is where it is totally subjective. Mostly its because of the body stature, big boobs or flat breasted etc. And two years ago it was totally fine. Let the market decide what sells and what does not. I am tired of the USK or BPJM telling me what I am allowed to do and what not. I am old enough to decide.

I'm totally with you on the last statement!

Still, the less stricter course in general over the last few years of both these institutions is somewhat promising (you have to consider, that these boards consist mostly of people, that have nothing to do with the medium they decide over - just christian "officials", psychologists and teachers /harsh generalization) . Hell, the Evil Dead movies are not illegal to obtain anymore since 2016! :)

And to the "They are 18 in the West"...so, years work different in the west and the east? :messenger_grinning:

This is baffling because they rated this game 16+. There you have to produce a porn movie! UK and US boards rated this 18+

That is why it is ridiculous. This often is the case with Anime like games nothing else as well. That why I said its very subjective....

Senran Kagura Bon Appetit physical release by Limited Run Games got delayed from the October release to November. The reason is because of Sony new policy Limited Run Games said. Thankfully no content was cut on this re-release. You can read the other tweets by clicking on the twitter icon.

Well, that's interesting. I have Bon Appetit orered and would be really mad if it was censorted after I paid for it. Even though it's not changed this definitely makes it hard to buy games on a Sony platform with confidence since they can be delayed at the last minute and be censored. What if no one mentions a game is censored? Is Sony comfortable tricking me into buying a censored game if the publisher chooses not to inform consumers? Not a good way to build trust.

While I may have never bought this game. I feel people should have a choice. I hate to see small Japanese games pushed to the side. I have always preferred both the Japanese games and the aesthetics and art style over many western titles.

The Omega Labyrinth games dev already jumped ship by moving to the Nintendo Switch. If you want uncensored physical format of these niche games them the Nintendo Switch is the way to go

You're more right than I could have imagined, just learned Warriors Orochi 4 is censored on every platform but the Nintendo Switch. The breast physics are gone on the PS4, Xbox and Steam but are intact on the Switch. WTH? Wish I didn't buy it on the PS4 already... I'm really trying not to by censored games but there's no way to know until it's too late it seems.

I'm shocked that even the Steam version has the breast physics removed. I can imagine that the devs will release a patch to put it back in or the mod community do it themselves, but still...

This shit is already reaching other games (quite quickly, I might add). Warriors Orochi 4 on PS4, Xbox, and PC all had boob physics knocked down to almost nothing. While the Switch version has it all in intact.

How long before we are seeing Sweat and ice cube fatalities instead of blood in Mortal Kombat? How long before the screens go black & white and the camera pulls away from violent scenes in horror games?

*Edit: oops. I accidentally stated Soul Calibur 6 instead of Warriors Orochi 4. I’ve been playing way too much Soul Calibur.

Soul Calibur 6 isn’t even on switch so what the fuck are you talking about?

Also, never. Mortal Kombat X is the goriest one by far, no signs of censorship

Have you played modern horror games? Which ones are being censored?

Sounds like fear mongering to me over losing some anime tits

Oops, I’m playing Soul Calibur 6 on PS4. I meant Warriors Orochi.

I meant this is how it starts. With the little things. Then you get what we had in the Super NES era (sweat instead of blood in Mortal Kombat). Then it continues, like in The Punisher on PS2 and Xbox with it’s black and white screen cut aways. The original Resident Evil was originally censored (at least the intro was).

History is starting (key word is starting) to repeat itself.

This is ok but not goofy anime sexual content?

I don't understand people, there's something really, really twisted about how humans feel violence is more acceptable than sexuality.

Who’s saying it is? I never saw anyone freaking out over the Witcher 3 sex scenes

Weird anime shit is different. From what I’ve seen the faces all have a really young look (most definitely on purpose) mixed with ridiculous proportions and it usually shows them in compromising situations where even they don’t seem to feel comfortable... it all seems super creepy and anyone that likes that shit gets the side eye from me

Awkward animations aside Witcher 3 is in a whole other league of showing sex than trash like this

I would argue wolfenstein the new order has the most well done sex scene weirdly enough

If Witcher 3s representation of women and sex was as pervy and gross as anime, I’d be fine with it being banned right now, no need to wait

What's unfortunate is it's seeming more than likely that there will be a continuing wave of this type of situation, whether it's games altered at their source or Western titles removing content. I can only hope this policy/attitude at Playstaiton grew and flew under upper management's notice and can maybe be killed, after enough complaints from consumers and developers. Either way, as much as possible, I'll for the time be shifting my spending away from Sony and their products.

First I am not an artist. So sorry if my comment maybe not accurate.

For the realistic art direction much2 more easy to predict the one's age base on outside appearance, but not on anime art style. Thats way sometimes on anime games, first time you play there are introduction page about their ages.

Now lets says about the one you said gross:
So who have the right say to judge this anime art is gross/under age? You? SIE? NOA? Polygon? ERA? Is there anything like an international standard about the ages of anime art? Nothing AFAIK so it's understandable if this varies from one to another.

Since the problematic anime mainly the east asia/japanese one, a little off topic here: are you western? How much you know about eastern asian culture? Why east asian women usually looks younger than their western counterpart? How the east asian couple hetero sexual relationship do? Do you know JAV? Know the Artist? Already watch one of their movies? About how they behave when they do sexual intercourse?

I don’t think you follow

I’m fine with nudity and sex in games. I agree violence is worse than sex or nudity any day

But the kind of stuff I’m talking about isn’t just sex and nudity, and frankly it’s way more problematic than even violence

In what world does a game need to exist where you can lift clothing against girls will to see them naked, etc

I do believe that 99% of people can murder npc’s In fallout and not go and have it affect their real world actions or sensibilities, because people know killing = bad

But with how prevalent sexual assault and general skeevy behavior about women is, I can’t in good conscience say the same for that content

Anyone has the right to decide its gross and underage

If anything, you don’t have some kind of god given right to consume that kind of content on someone else’s platform

Do you own Sony? They decide what is ok and isn’t for their platform and it’s really on them to decise

If that’s a problem for you, I’m sure what your looking for exists elsewhere especially in a more open marketplace like of gaming

Most of this is just people looking to be outraged over the “SJW” boogeymen

In a world where there are developers willing to make that stuff and enough buyers to support it within the law. It's not my cup of tea but I'm no authoritarian wanting to see it banned.

So you're worried people will be more emboldened/encouraged to commit sexual assaults because of those kind of games? You don't seem to have that concern with violence and violent video games which comes off as you having a double standard. Why you think 99% of people will know not to re-enact what they're playing in violent games but for some reason they're more likely to re-enact stuff from anime/hentai games. If you have any research to back that up then there's something to talk about.

Of course I never angry to Sony to dictate what can do or not at their own platform, only dissapoint with their decision and I will take some of my gaming business as much as possible to another one

I angry to the one who can easily condemn/shaming/make a call the thing they do not understand about based on their own culture knowledge. And if you actively read the Polygon, Era etc you know this is true, no some illusion SJW boogeyman created out of nowhere.

I wasn't going to say anything but I will add my 2 cents. I don't see the problem with this game and I am a woman. Most say the characters look underage but to me, it is just an art style, I don't know many children that look like these characters. When I see them I see adults, not children. The anime art style was developed from western cartoons from the 50's and 60's. The big eyes were influenced by such creators like Disney. Hell, today some even say Disney's princess is too youthful. Eventually, it just developed into its own thing with anime. The look is now a part of it's culture. My self I have more problem with games like Witcher 3 with realistic sex then fantasy sex because you know it is not real. I am more uncomfortable with the realistic presentation of sex but that is just me. I would never tell anyone they shouldn't or can't have it. How is this game hurting people? Honestly, only a small percentage will buy this game. Many more will buy fall out and kill things. As someone said why condemn one and not the other? We of late have problems with a lot of people killing each other. I know it is popular because of me too to condemn anything that could be sexual assault but I don't see this game causing a problem, Many even have the women cut you down in anime games for lewd behavior. Hell, when the hero in many anime acts like a pervert they usually slap him or something bad happens. One can't use the excuse that the girls look underage when Sony's own game the Last of US 2 has underage girls dealing with sex. I just feel Sony is being biased toward a certain region. I feel it is unfair. Let the consumer decide if it should fail or succeed. I know it all Sony's decision and it is their company but I can understand the outcry. I remember in the Super NES and Genesis days and even the beginning of the PlayStation and Saturn hating that companies wouldn't allow the game to come over cause they were too eastern. I will admit I might be biased cause i am not a fan of many western made games.

AFAIK this is the first time Sony mandate the content from the 3rd party publisher since their inclusion to gaming with ps1.
For now the best one regarding the content moderation still Valve as they only care about the law, the second / regular one is Nintendo. They do not care as long as approved by the board and you know who the worst one.
lol pathetic platform holder feel they all mighty now because of the performance first party studio output.

Yes, “dealing” with sex. As in Ellie coming of age and discovering herself and what she’s attracted to. It’s done in TLOU really tactfully. Unless someone hates lesbians there shouldn’t be any objection to how her relationship unfolded

If young looking characters were given the same agency and respect in anime we wouldn’t even be having this conversation

Yes by the end of the PS1 era it was great Sony actually allowed tons of Japanese games. Still bitter that the Saturn didn't get more because of Bernie Stolar.

This is more of a preference but I prefer the more Japanese art style to ultra-realistic ones. Like everyone dislikes how Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur looks more like dolls than real people. Just my taste, I prefer games with tons of color and more cartoonish looks.

I don't have a problem with Lesbians. I have friends that are. I just brought up TLOU cause if the issue is with being underage or looking that way, shouldn't it be across the board to make it clear. Feels unfair to make exceptions for some but not for others. It is Sony's policy and they are the one in control, not I.

There is a HUGE difference between showing two teenage girls falling in love and sharing a kiss than showing explicit sexual content with characters CLEARLY designed to look young but fall into that loophole of “well she just looks young she’s actually 35”

You can’t even compare the 2 so I don’t k is why you are trying

Do you have any studies or anything that you can point to that show sexual content like the anime art you're referring to has any connection to sexual assault and skeevy behavior as you put it?

I am an artist and I draw erotic and pornographic art so I feel I should at least ask here since you seem to be implying the kind of art I'm doing contributes to sexual assault.

My counterargument to this is that TLOU relies heavily on realism and thus, the character models follow real human proportions and interactions. This is a stark contrast to the characters in Japanese games as they follow the anime/cartoon style which is very obviously not realistic. As a result, the anime style Japanese games intrinsically put a more solid wall between reality and fiction than does TLOU.
