The 4 failures of the generation

I think NMS actually redeemed themselves out of this list. It took a while, but it's legitimately a great game now.
I remember reading an article about NMS in the New Yorker ages ago, I then saw Internet Historians video recently. Kinda makes me want to get it.

1 - Halo not releasing at console Launch, along with Craig. Maybe one of the biggest blunders in all gaming fuck ups

2 - Every dam piece of woke shit in history, Andromeda, Ellie, Abby, Black Widow, Kamala Khan, everything in Inquisition, etc.

3 - All of the broken games. Launch version No Man's Sky, fallout, anthem, avengers, and some current ones too (ahem)

4 - An entire generation goes by without a Heavenly Sword sequel or a Vanquish sequel. I mean what in the actual Fuck????

OH RIGHT. Super Mario Odyssey, but that's a mega unpopular position.
It can’t be a failure if nobody expects nothing from it. Anyone who expects something from Mario being the same (not specially brilliant) game for 25 years is delusional.

Wait what? Not only RDR2 is one of the best game of all time but like in 5 days gained so much money to become one the the most profitable product of entertainment of all time. No videogame of Al time, product of entertainment.

IMO it's Andromeda, that Avengers game, Anthem and FF XV.

I'd also say that Mario Odyssey is perhaps the most disappointing game i played this gen, but it is not a *failure*

Any game released in a barely playable state is worthy of a place in that kind of list.

Heh, normally I'd agree with you, if not for games being released and then so drastically turned around is really damn rare.

In fact, that's a story I know of happening only 3 times.

1 is the ChaosUT mod for Unreal Tournament 99.
2 is Final Fantasy XIV - they even worked the reboot into the story.
3 is NMS

I actually agree, I think strictly online games should get a pass, if they ever get good that is.... They're more like TV shows, who cares if Seinfeld only got good at the third or fourth seasons.... You still, have a couple of seasons of pure classics. But a movie has only one chance to be great.

A little quick to call Cyberpunk a failure, no? Seems fine (from what little I've played so far), but I've heard some stuff gets buggy, which my friends inform me is something CDPR usually keeps on top of.

Bigger failures that come to mind are Final Fantasy XV and Star Ocean 5. Oh right. Yooka-Laylee. Oof.

Edit: OH RIGHT. Super Mario Odyssey, but that's a mega unpopular position.

I would say too that

1. Mario odyssey

were the biggest failure (to me), I hoped it would be the mario game that I again like and it would feel as fun as games on nes/snes.

but nope, game just felt depressing, boring, repetitive and somehow "empty". playing it felt like some alien would suck out the joy from me and made me sad.

Worlds were kind of boring, things were way too repetitive (collect x of y, then they are always on similar places)

I forced myself to play until the human city, but then I just could not play it and sold it.

It is praised by all fans, but I bet that no reviewer would have the guts to be open if they would hate it too.

3D marios are just lame, boring and shit.

I got game&watch mario 2020 and mario 1 is still fun to play, IMO 3D were a mistake for mario, it never were meant to be 3D so it just doesnt work and 3D mario looks fucking weird and out of the place.

I cant think any other game that would have been such a failure to me, but

2. Last of US 2

I havent played it, but I see it as a failure because of all the political shit around it, I just dont support retarded politics in games/movies, it doesnt belong into the fantasy world and facts and fiction should not mix. Biggest reason is that Neil durkman or whatever his name is, he sounds like some feminazi-agenda-lpgt-nutcase, bad PR and maybe the game is good, but if the company supports some person that says stupid ass shit and have open agenda for pushing stupid politics in his games = no thanks. Specifically when they push problems wrong way around, "lpgt" people are bullying others online and I have never seen straight people bullying them (but being gay/trans is super rare, maybe met 5 openly gays in my life and seen 2 trans person)

3. Destiny

While I played it over 2500 hours, it always felt bit disappointing, because of the super hype and the different image they gave out before the launch, like it would be more than just FPS.

then there are many games that werent as cool as I assumed, but nothing really bad.

Cyberpunk 2077 feels a great game with super potential, just few patches to go before it blooms

For who's saying No Man's Sky also, NMS is one of the most succesful game of this gen. Started with a shitty game Hello Games worked so fucking hard to improve the game, and at the end NMS shines.
It was a huge success for Hello Games.

We're straight up ignoring so many things huh?

The One reveal and the shit-show that ensued?

Konami killing Silent hills and the fallout with Kojima?

The freaking Stadia and it's support?

EA, Activision and Ubisoft and their horrendous loot box BS?

Fallout 76' launch and continued screwups?

The new Kinect?

The Order 1776', Andromeda, etc lackluster showing?

The constant barrage of empty SJW woke crap that all virtue signal and no substance?

The fact dozens of games have been released in an incomplete state?

Dead Rising 4 and the shadow it was of it's former greatness? (my personal one)

and lets not forget this gen gave us the whiny progressive doxxer/ cancler mentality that literally split this forum up (for the better)

Just to name a few...me thinks you might need to rethink the list

There are two main failures this gen & they're not games, i.e. one is cultural, aka the insertion of politics into everything, antagonizing all sides with political gaslighting by the media ("gamers are dead" & all the Sarkeesian stuff accusing normal people of being racist sexist misogynists if they don't like agendas shoved in their face). Just look at the "other site" & how it was born or how the people over there think, i.e. paranoid culture warriors at war with everything & everyone which goes against their doctrine. It's wild.

The other failure is financial, whereby Games as a Service (GaaS) were the new golden apple for publishers. Get people addicted to one game with the intent of creating the most simple addictive gameplay loop possible (looter shooter apparently works best, i.e. where fast paced shooting is rewarded with constant loot drops which might just offer something "good") & milk them for every penny they've got with a drip, drip of content sporadically dropped on the playerbase, at a cost of course. It's dystopian stuff.

On console, Cyberpunk is probably "the" biggest game failure of the generation - definitely based on the money it cost to make & its hype.

Cyberpunk isn’t a failure either. It is fine on the PC. And will get better on the consoles.

Do PC's even have "generations"? Legit question, because it's pretty clear generations refer to console generations, so as I said, in terms of the ps4/One generation, Cyberpunk was dead on arrival. Aka a gaming dud of massive proportions. It currently sits alongside stuff like Homefront on the ps4 metacritic chart.

Embarrassing stuff.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Lack of traditional dungeons in this gens new Zelda, no Mandalorian game, game sizes too big, constant updates, PS5 stock, lack of exclusive shooters, Joel not being the main character.

RDR2 for sure. Anthem was just live service turd, Same with Fallout 76

But RDR 2 is something I was eagerly awaiting and what we got was pretty shallow experience with zero systemic components and really scripted structure while most of it's gameplay mechanics were half baked at best.
Grfx was great though

Cyberpunk ll be pretty great in 6 month

FFXV? Lolno. The Order 1886 above all of these.

The only failure associated with DriveClub is modernity's inability to appreciate and properly acknowledge genius.

DriveClub was was buggy and the multiplayer was broken on release. They were supposed to provide a free version of the game with multiplayer functionality for PS Plus subscribers, and ended up delaying that for like a year. The game eventually came together, but the whole thing was a mess and ended up with Sony closing down Evolution Studios.

I mean, all patched up it became a good game, but I would still consider it a failure in the end.

  1. Fallout 76
  2. Anthem
  3. Fifa microtransactions
  4. NBA2k casino microtransactions

I was waiting on Cyberpunk until the next gen upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series X come out anyway. I'm glad that I'm waiting. By that time all of the beta testers will have fixed all the bugs

Oh look, this guy personally hated RDR2. How edgy of him to include it on a list next to Anthem. So profound....

1. Nintendogaf MH World deniers
2. Xbox One
3. Sony on selling me a PS5
4. Evilore for creating the monster known as Reeeesetera

Only Anthem. The other three made money. Couldn't believe how boring they could make a wannabe Iron Man game when I played a trial of Anthem.

The devs apologized for how shit the game runs. That's pretty much a failure.

Anyone who thinks Fallout 76 is a failure is wrong. The game is going strong enough for that to be clearly not true.

Maybe failure should actually be defined. Because right now 76 has similar player numbers as Cold War (on Xbox).
