The problem I personally have with this comic (and I will state outright that I have no "legal" basis for my argument, just morals) with this compared to various political cartoons is that, unlike this comic, they actually succeed in making an important point, usually to call someone out on their bullshit and present it in such a way that makes the situation more obvious visually. If this comic was trying to make a point, it didn't do it well at all. I may hate George W. Bush with a passion, but even I would defend his retarded ass if political comics depicted him sucking dicks to get his way (or implying as such). The only thing this comic succeeded in doing is implying that the woman in question is a stupid whore who'll suck anyone off if they'll buy her game. Its not fair to her at all. I didn't even know who she was before this whole thread started, but I just imagine what I'd do if I were in her shoes. I can't even imagine how difficult it must be to be an attractive woman in the videogame industry; frankly if I were her I'd get out of there and find a better place that isn't going to make snap judgements about her simply because she's an attractive woman who's also found some success. God almighty she can't have done that on her own without sucking people off right? RIGHT?

And no, I'm not sticking my nose in this because she's a woman. I don't care male, female, gay, straight, black, white doesn't fucking matter to me. People are people, and there's just some lines of common decency that shouldn't be crossed. I get pissed off when people defend these things simply because they're protected by law. Yes, people have the right to say what they want, but being a responsible adult means knowing when its time to speak and when its time to keep it in check. I kind of burst in anger a bit earlier and I apologize for calling people pretentious cocksuckers.

But I'm getting sick and tired of trying to defend our community when stuff like this goes down. I'm a pretty hardcore gamer, and just like many of us here, I've had my fair share of being misunderstood by "normal" people. I don't want to be associated with crap like this, all it does is bring the rest of us down. What I love about Penny Arcade's "Child's Play" is that it not only helps kids in various hospitals all across the country, it helps give us gamers a better name in a world that tries to depict us as crazy serial killers who undergo hours of murder simulation every day.

Shit like this... its just not defendable. I don't care how perfectly legal it may be, I can't and won't defend it. If we really want to put a stop to the likes of assholes like Jack Thompson, we have to rid ourselves of this rep we don't deserve. We have to rise above it, not sink down to their level.
ok, that GWB comparison was fucking retarded, and what's with your avatar?

the point of the comic was that Ubisoft was pimping her out because she's pretty. Someone on Something Awful poked fun at that, it was really distasteful but it does have a point, one you don't get. The game became more about Jade than the game itself. It's reminiscent of something you'd see in South Park, that type of humour.

As I've said before, I don't know who changed it, but every time I try to change it back into this.

It won't change. I don't know who changed it, but I'd like to change it back to this if I may?

EDIT: I get that that's what the comic was supposed to be making a point of, but there's telling a good joke, and then there's taking a joky waaaaaaaay too far. Any good comedian knows when to keep going and when they should stop while they're ahead. He could have made the exact same point with her simply modeling the game in a bikini or something, that would have conveyed the exact same point, minus the offensive attack on the specific person.

No. All we have to do is replace all our awesome games with shitty cartoon/barbie based games before we go and kill people.

That image is 144x144, well beyond the boundaries of the accepted 90x120. Either you've been in violation of the TOS all this time, or you're a liar.

No, the games are fine. What we need to do is start acting like responsible adults. Once we start doing that, people will finally get over the whole "games are making our kids evil" bullshit.

Its been that size, it just automatically resized itself in my profile. I thought to limitation was based on kb size, not physical size. I don't mind adjusting that.

My idea is better. I wanna still be and asshole about shit(like this) and wouldn't give that up for anything. This comic is exactly how it is with this game and you know what, there should be alot more comics like this....for everything.

Ahhh, my forums of yore.

Strange thing Nintendo/Sega fan on Xbox forums. But hell, they all seemed a lot saner then some of the Nintendo/Sega sites I use to go to. Anyone remember the NintendoNext forums? That was some crazy crazy stuff. Loved the site, disliked the forums.

I think I found the comic, finally.

Wow. Aside from the semen, it's SFW. Anyways, it's hard to believe someone would actually get upset from that to spark a lawsuit. And then to sue not the artist, but the people who found the work funny.

Am I the only one who thinks the only reason Ubisoft are making a deal of this is to divert attention to themselves, or more importantly Assassins Creed?

and lol @ people defending Jade

Finally saw the comic. Wow. I can see why Raymond would be upset... but again, she needs to expect this sort of thing to happen if she's gonna continue to be a pretty PR face for the games she's associated with.

I almost see it as the opposite. Now the game is just becoming a public mockery, especially as they botched this whole lawsuit ordeal.

I have a feeling someone showed Jade and she freaked out that someone could think of her as a shill. (People do this when they realize the world isn't perfect.) And like a good lapdog, her lawyer did what she said, "I want you to sue the website that posted this!" without any forethought as to an actual basis.

I wonder if she knows that people masturbate to her pictures.

It's somehow pleasing that Private Eye (though diminished since Foot era) is still a zillion times more badass libel-wise (and unimaginably funnier - goes without saying) than the less mature internet forums going around. Goddamn that magazine could tear up the games industry if it took an interest.

I understand the point the comic was trying to make -- and I think it makes it. But that doesn't make it 'acceptable' by any stretch of the imagination. The same point could have been made more tastefully -- without getting extremely personal and offensive.

That said, there really aren't grounds for a lawsuit here. But I think this is more about Ubisoft defending one of it's employees, which, if I were Jade, I would appreciate.

But to those of you who say this isn't a big deal? Jeesh. Try to understand what women have gone through -- and are subjected to -- as they rise to the top in any business. Maybe then you'll understand why this comic is offensive.

They may have been, but the game hardly became more about her. Gaf was the only place I knew of that made a deal out of her. On a side note, they created an amazing game.

Ubisoft's legal department is not dumb.

They know that suing Something Awful is a losing game.

I don't see it as anything but a shitty publicity stunt.

.. and a way for identifying cryptofascists.

I don't know... if I was Jade I wouldn't particularly appreciate something going from about 100 people seeing it on a forum to top 10 in the google hot list with potentially thousands of people looking at it.

You never get other game designers being made into comic strips where they give out BJ's to appease their audience. This clearly ain't just some random comic strip. From the timing and everything its clearly much more sinister than that. Its completely tasteless and possibly even sexist too. Just because she's female she happens to be giving a bunch of horny gamers BJ's.

I think everyone understands why it's offensive, we just accept that no one has the right to live their lives without being offended. That's the world. People get offended all the time. People say nasty things about other people all the time, and the more famous you are, the more nastiness there is.

In terms of practicality Ubisoft has drawn massive amounts of attention to the strip, and won't be able to get it removed or hidden from public sight because this is the internet. It doesn't work that way. The internet is the ultimate gateway to obnoxious self-expression.

Oh, and the original author posted it on DeviantArt, where it's still sitting. Wonder why they didn't sue DeviantArt? http://teh-dave.deviantart.com/gallery/

I'm surprised this is the first time in the thread someone has stated something about the game.

Which is awesome.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
Ok, so the comic was in poor taste, and although it wasn't that good, it summed up the feeling among many people in the gaming world, that Jade Raymonds' image was overused in the hyping of Assassin's Creed, which I'm afraid is more of an indication of the industries immaturity when it comes to the usage of women as "marketing tools" than the comic has ever done.

Sorry, but the people defending Ubi and Jade are misguided, Ubi are guilty of bringing the image of women in the gaming industry back down to that of "men magnets" and Jade is guilty of letting it happen, even the promo shots, like the one in this thread showing Jade as the focal point of a "team" shows how bad it has got, sorry, but I have no sympathy for either, the comic and other imagery are a parody of this, and is such, pretty safe, legally speaking.

Does anyone know what Jade's credentials are? MobyGames only has her down as a programmer on two games, one I've never heard of and another that never came out.

I think if it can be demonstrated that she should be at the helm of a huge Ubisoft project, many people will see her as just a PR hog as opposed to a PR hog who got to where she was for having a pretty face and vagina.

This won't make the comic issue any different - those who think bad taste should be illegal will be unmoved by the argument of Jade's credentials.

Seriously guys, comic isn't really that funny...

I could understand it if there was humor or something but its not even funny...

Then again was the Milf-Perrin thing ever funny or was it just something people did? I guess Reggie could have been all kicking GAFs ass and taking names but he didn't, which made it not a big deal overall aside from a few people who would show up at every interview

After Assassin's Creed's subpar reviews based on its repetitive gameplay and shitty storyline, I think Jade Raymond will no longer be prancing in front of the media's cameras. For all that hot-air blown by her for AC as a redefining next-gen title, it's falling short.

This one-trick pony is now going to retire. And that's good news. Anyone who says that this situation is proof of why this industry is immature and fueled by sweaty geeks: get that shit off your nose. Ubisoft's PR practice with "Ms. Raymond", fresh into the industry and completely unproven (yet in the role of a producer, for some reason) is getting more air time than industry veterans the likes of [insert the name of anyone's who's worked on a great game]. Ms Jade is oblivious to this industry and to what makes a good game. The comic hits on exactly that point: she's a marketing whore, and Ubisoft saw it fit to give us this pretty young thing on display because it thinks the gaming population is a bunch of horny sexless geeks. Well fuck you and your multi-million dollar flop of a killer app.

I kind of feel sorry for her. It's one thing to use your looks, but Ubi probably took it a bit too far.

Believe me, I see nothing wrong with someone getting attention for their looks ... it just must be frustrating when that seems to be the only thing you're getting attention for. Its not like she's just some dumb broad with a pretty face.

She started her career doing game programming at Sony (she has a CS degree). Then before leaving there, she founded the first R&D group within Sony Online. That group made some of the better net-code out there.

Basically, she went tech route to becoming a producer. She isn't some business grad.

I don't know nearly enough to make any decisive call on this, but it sounds like she still lacks credentials. Is it typical to go from not a producer to producing a huge game like Asscreed? I know in other walks of life it wouldn't happen that way with that whole concern that experience is useful and people need to walk before they run, etc.
