Ubisoft was ‘disappointed’ by Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR sales, will not increase VR investment

I wish Ubisoft would just ask someone before wasting resources on games like this.

I would have said, it seems like a decent idea, I'm sure it would be pretty cool for about 20 minutes but no one will really buy it.

Entry cost is the main issue.
I see this and hear it from a lot of my personal friends but I don't understand it. I think it must be true but what is the magic price? You could easily get a Quest 2 for $200 USD off and on throughout the year. Even a Quest 3 is the same price as a PS5 with the disc drive. I actually don't mind the PSVR 2 price as I've really loved Village, RE4, GT7, Vertigo 2, and now Legendary Tales but I get that argument because it requires a PS5 as well.

I think the big issue is perceived value and not understanding what it is. Many people have never tried true VR and have a preconceived notion it's trash. Those that have sometimes start with games that are intense and will get you sick until you get used to artificial locomotion.

I can see the perception of VR here on Gaf. I see that many say the game is limited, it is not - it's AC but in VR. It's an incredible game and you truly have more freedom than ever. Somehow VR needs to market itself differently. Right now Sony isn't really trying, Meta is chasing a casual crowd that are not going to make a large investment on the platform, and Apple really doesn't seem interested in VR gaming at all.

It's still here and won't go away, but it's nowhere near as popular as many expected or promised. We're far from the short-lived craze when even Samsung would bundle a VR shell with its smartphones.
The truth is VR is designed to be a tech for geeks or tech specialists with a specific use for it. Most people don't want to be enclosed within a piece of technology, they want to carry it around with them to be used whenever they want and most often while they're doing other things. It's all about low restraints and multi-tasking, something that is the opposite of common VR. Forget the wow effect, it's all about convenience : Segway had a very impressive tech but could not compete against scooters.

What the heck? I was here back when everyone said VR was a fad like 3dtv that would die in a few years. That and kinect were literally the go-to comparisons here for VR.

That was way off base.

And if you the read the quote from ubisoft they said they aren't "increasing" investment in VR. Nothing about stopping their investment completely.

I see alot of usernames here that never post in the VR forums of course. Just looking for any shred of negativity to run away with lol. VR is dead!

20m+ Quests is not that bad of a user base.
If you approach it like traditional consoles it sounds like a good number, but it seems like many of those are more "casual" (for lack of a better word, like people buying it for fitness) or even bought as a tool for professionals/academics. The people you actually target with relatively high budget gaming experiences might be far fewer than the number of devices sold suggests. I think it's just better to target all VR platforms unless you manage to get a very fat wad of cash from just one of them for exclusivity.

You know we are talking about the gaming aspect right?

The description you give fits with the use of the apple vison pro, which isnt made for gaming.

And with that, you do have people wearing it in public.

Also, from the era you mention with Samsung's phone VR....exactly what were some quality vr apps and games at that time? Buggy roller coasters or bad YouTube vids?

You might as well be talking about 56k modems compared to fiber optics.

They should have never cancelled the Splinter Cell VR game. Series is nearly perfect for it.
Ever play Espire 1 or 2?

Espire 2 has a mixed reality option that can turn your house into a literal sneaking mission.

Well that’s not exactly playing like a 2D games on the pad. Not sure I understand your original comment then

No but the motion controls were the weakest part. Especially the reloading and changing weapons. I don't mind the aiming though.

The other game i played was the VR Horizon game. Beautiful for sure but i would never play the whole thing. It reminded me of those Wii casual games.

Last game was Thumper. That only had the view, everything else was just like a regular gamepad.

The best thing i enjoyed about VR was the view. All 3 games had this. The virtual hands, aiming and inspecting items like you are really holding them are great too. Everything else was jank and i would prefer regular buttons.

That's why I play alot of games with a gamepad. Playing The Outer Worlds right now in VR and its amazing. Best of both worlds. lol. The massive 3d world view, but with a gamepad I've been using for decades.

But if you do want all the motion controls, alot of games do work well with them.

The good thing is Quest studios are improving leaps and bounds, even if we only get 1 ubisoft game every 3 years.

Hell massive gaming corporations like MS and Sony have been doing this for decades and would be happy with this:

Facebook spends 10 billion (with a B) on their VR division every single fiscal year. There is zero chance they didn't fund this game in its entirety.

VR has been so profoundly disappointing. I’ve been all-in on the tech since the first Oculus kickstarter, but the software is just so pathetic. Literally the only game that I’d call a true must-play is Alyx.

What else have you played?

The description I make works for gaming like any other activity. The most popular console platform today isn't a powerful one you can tether yourself to, it's a small underpowered one you can take with you on the bus (yes, I'm talking about the Nintendo Switch, and I'm not even touching the topic of true mobile gaming). The gaming market is growing, but it's not targeting the "gaming den" or "man cave" model.

I just fired this up for the first time yesterday and it really is great. It baffles me that it's not on PCVR and PSVR2. I'm sure meta threw a moneyhat at them but VR really needs to be more multiplatform.

More likely they targeted the biggest VR market where they had the best chance of selling more copies of the game.

They probably couldnt justify ports to the higher fidelity systems

VR sadly is afflicted by lack of standardization, platform specific titles and a very small percentage of games that rise to the level of aaa. Strange he felt the need to say that the apple headset was good out of the blue. Where there some other context as to why he said that?

The 20 million figure for quest is even more impressive when you consider a year before that the bestselling VR platform ever did 5 million is 5 years.

That quest 20 million figure happened in 2 years and only 1 year later.
Quest has sold a lot, but at what cost? The on board graphics set up lends to corny low if experiences. Every time I see an oculus quest ad it's some cringey workout game, my nephew loves VR got a quest 3 and all he plays is gorilla tag.

it's hard to see them try and market VR towards gym members with these horrible fitness titles, as if they're trying to dog whistle to people, "do t worry, if you get VR you can still be a cool trendy person without looking like a sad dork who plays with himself in the dark all day at his PC" I understand why they would want to do that to capture more market, the problem is people like that don't really play video games and sure as hell aren't going to buy a quest 3. It just comes across as really tone deaf marketing

They tried and reached the truth. VR needs another 50 years. Revisit the thing in 2080. Maybe then we'll have proper tech, until then, back to pixel graphics. But movies will make up new things and idiots will try to reach that level of insanity.

That was a point I was making in an earlier thread. Meta is insistent on marketing this towards non-gamers and it just isn't going to grow much in that market. Ladies who watch talk shows aren't going to wear these headsets no matter what celebrity promotes it.

I will say there are some incredible looking games on Quest 2 and 3 but you're right they don't even market it. They need to truly show AC Nexus, Asgards Wrath 2, Underdogs, and more. They need to demonstrate them with models of people who actually play games. Meta and honestly a lot of companies recently act embarrassed of their customers instead of embracing them.

I love VR and am fully invested in the Meta and PSVR 2 platforms (have a decent steamvr library as well) but I'd like to see some real effort of these companies showing gamers the games, not some bs "not real gameplay" videos with people who have no interest in gaming pretending to play.

I dont get why these companys (sony, meta, valve and apple) havnt learnt from nintendo, if you gunna make a gimmick your best to heavily invest in software for it, i just dont.care these companys spending millions on it to die like this lmao

I can't think of a single fitness ad for Quest that I've seen in over a year.

I like the movement though, climbing is good. You have aimbot with knives and the bow. Can shove people into water. Everyone in game is a twin of each other.

But it had micro stutters that put me off massively, heard people uising some 10 dollar app to fix it, but just tried AC3 today, and that micro stutter is still there.

I had those stutters too. I've never bought the optimizer app as well. The stutters got better as I went on and I also upgraded from Quest 2 to 3, and although people say there isn't a difference, it's real to me. Not worth $500 alone for the difference but the stutters and anti aliasing were significantly better for me.

Do you have any experience in VR? Your suggestion is nothing new and it’s a nauseating one, peoples get sick with this method of motion.
I don't know, i just played Crash 4 and I'm fine, ever since uevr got released and I got smarter with the tools UEVR/Unreal Engine/Virtual desktop I've noticed what really works and what doesn't and how small forceful camera can cause discomfort, but also how fixable it is.

I'm basically jumping into flat games never designed for VR with a gamepad and it's working out great, well most of the time.

Lmfao they didn't even advertise the game! There was literally no promotion leading up to the release. They just dropped the game out of nowhere and that was that. Plus the fact they just reused old characters and stories makes it appear like a cheap spinoff project.

I personally bought this game day one and didn't like it so I returned it. Everything is copy and pasted excessively in typical Ubisoft fashion. There really are better games out there for VR. I don't think it helped that Asguard's Wrath launched so close to it either.

Stop making standalone games, add on a VRmode to existing games and it'll steadily grow the base, tbf all I want from an UBisoft game is for them to open their educational/exploration mode on Ass Creed to VR, I want to walk around ancient Egypt and Greece, Paris, London etc
