Eh, there's such a thing as working out too much.

I just go for cardio and lightly toned muscles. You're never going to use any buffed up muscles (unless you're an athlete), so I fail to see why anyone would spend 2 hours a day wasting time just to maintain a useless muscle mass.

You don't spend that amount of time in the gym maintaining muscle mass, you're building it. If you're just aiming to maintain, 2 or 3 trips to the gym each week for an hour or two is more than enough.

It always sounds somewhat strange to me when I hear people talking about the need to lose (or in some instances, gain) weight. I've just never had to deal with it before. I've always kept myself in prime shape, and between 165-170 pounds.

Now, my one best friend has lost a lot of weight, mostly thanks to me. He wanted me to start training him in martial arts, for a hobby, and also to lose weight. He's been training with a lot of passion for about 7 months now. In January, he was 210 pounds. Now he's 174.

Screw Atkins, go on the Boogie weight-loss plan ;)

Any of the success stories want to post specifics on how you did it?

Well, first thing I did was change my diet. I evened out because I didn't add any exercise, so I lost 10 lbs in 2 months after changing my diet.

Second major thing was changing my diet again, because having Caesar salad 24/7 wasn't healthy for me. I watched my portions, made sure not to eat too many carbs, balance my diet - lots of fruits and veggies -- tons of water (I drank at least 10-15 cups a day), and the dance exercise.

It took a while to get used to the change, and in fact, that next summer I stopped completely and slowly gained 10lbs back, so I enlisted in a 7am jogging class that Fall Quarter and jogged even when the coach said I could walk. Pushed harder than anyone in the class and eventually placed first in every run we did (after constantly placing ~5th from last). Continue the diet plan, was on the school dance team, and weight trained once every other day and lost 18 lbs in two weeks. On average I had cardio M+W for one hour each, weight training before that M+W for one hour each, and 4 hours of Dance every W-F, while the weekends I rested.

Afterwards I continued jogging on my own, but weight train more often, and slowly lost weight over the past year until now, where I'm 150lbs.

You just have to keep pushing until it becomes habit and stay committed.

Agreed, counting calories, cuting down the carbs and exercise in the key.

I think i was on about 1500 calories when i was trying to lose weight, i lost 28 pounds in 2 months, i then started working out.

I still have some trouble spots though, area's of fat that im finding difficult to lose, i train 3-4 a week, but still no success :(

Atkins + exercise for me.
(note : Atkins isn't just eating meat and cheese ! if you follow it properly, all it does is teach you how your body reacts to carbs, and introduces a MUCH more balanced diet)

I was doing the exercise *before* atkins , but it needed a little push... :)

I'm fairly squad and stocky by birth so that kind of restricts me, but the fact that i was usually around 175 pounds at 5 ft 6 was slightly worrying. But the utter terror of an xmas or so ago, when i hit 185 pounds prompted a diet change.

I didn't think i was eating that badly - just eating a lot of pasta (carbtastic!), and i was gyming and playing soccer 2-3 times a week - but i was getting bigger. Ballooning infact.

Anyways, switched to Atkins - followed it properly, and (since recently) running about 15km a day and still playing soccer.

145 pounds at the moment.

"You just have to keep pushing until it becomes habit and stay committed."

indeed - exercise becomes very very addictive. I used to HATE treadmill running but now i love it. It's interesting to see where that "wall" comes - it used to come at 2km, now it comes at 8km or so. And also with eating of course, good eating habits = success.

I've got a bit of a success story too.

6', 205 pounds now, was 255.

About 2002, I was just quitting karate, my mom was in the hospital, and I just got my own website. I was about 220 at the height of karate, and I was in fairly muscular shape. But those three factors (less exercise, personal stress, and reclusiveness) multiplied together like mad. I was still walking to school and whatnot (this was grade 10) but I flew right up to 255.

Last summer, which was Summer of 2003, I figured I better take some initiative, and I took dietary supplements. That led me down to about 245. Even though I was feeling a little better I was still obese and there was no getting around it.

The september after I felt better and went back into karate classes. It didn't do much; I was losing a little fat but I was still gaining tons of muscle mass.

About February this year I decided to haul ass. It was a new semester and I didn't have a lunch, so I ate a powerbar during Info Tech every day as lunch. I also cut down on the milk I had with my cereal in the morning (from completely floating to little dribbles) and I started working out more and overdoing it in karate. In that time I fell from 240 to now 205. I look and feel great now.

beforeandafter.jpg

Of course, I jumped up 10 pounds in the beginning of the summer because of a 2 week vacation. We ate out every day and had lots of fresh Okanagon fruit. Well, everyone gained ten pounds. But I'm back down to 205. My summer goal is to go below 200 and get 180. I've still got a month until University.

Everyone noticed the difference when I dropped. I also noticed parts just disappeared. I was playing around with my neck one day in Geography and I noticed my jaw had completely lost the double chin. I don't know what my muscle to fat ratio is, but I can see my ribs and I'm fairly muscular at the moment. I still have some fat in my inner thighs and stomach to get rid of, but the rest of me is fine.

FUCK Atkins and every other diet that wants to deny you food. This is what I might eat in a typical day (I'm not making this up):

BREAKFAST:

None. Usually just don't have the time, plus I'm usually simply not hungry in the morning.

LUNCH:

-Bavarian Creme donut
-34oz Dr. Pepper

DINNER:

-Microwave cheeseburgers/chicken nuggents/Hot Pockets/whatever else is microvable.
-Much more soda
-Various sweets that I instinctively snack on whenever I'm reading or watching TV

I'm 6'0. Guess my weight.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
"185 -> 145?? I hope for your sake that you're a short guy..."

yup, 5 ft 6.
but "heavy set" - um - wide? chunky? I dunno.
I have a rugby players build i guess (something to do with years of playing rugby perhaps???)

I get your point. But even if you weigh relatively little, which is what you seem to be suggesting, I hope you don't think that necessarily engenders healthiness. If that's your typical day, I suspect you'll be pushing daises before you're pushing 60.

DCharlie

cholesterol - the hidden killer.

Then again - one english guy in the office eats 5-6 hamburgers and 3 hagendas ice cream things for lunch, does no exercise, and is super thin - and A grades all his medicals.

Different folks, different bodies.

Not if I don't start gaining weight first. If that even happens, I'll change my diet.

Months back I finally hit 140 for the first time in my life, then I started swimming regularly and dropped back to about 138 which is where I stand today. In 2000 I weighed about 132. I'm quite lean and svelte, but I should probably increase my exercise to keep myself in top shape. I have an ectomorphic physiology, I can run quite fast actually. Weight gain is a myth for me, oh well. I'll panic when I reach the dreaded 150...

2004 you looks the hottest and youngest.

Edit: Since everyone's sharing, I've been pretty steady around 180~185 until maybe 2003-2004, where I lost weight. I'm just under 180 now, something like 177 pounds. As much as I'd like to gain 15-20 pounds, I just don't have the discipline for it (I sleep irregular hours and my diet is inconsistent - I only get in two meals a day). I eat a lot of junk, too, so my metabolism must be nuts. I'm sure my cholesterol level is way high for my age 'cause of all the fatty stuff I take in, I'm just too afraid to have that confirmed by a doctor.

Not true. You probably have an unusually high metabolism and immediately burn off everything. Yet that doesn't always mean your heart and arteries are as fortunate.

I'm 6'2 and a very trim ~170 lbs. But I still watch what I eat.

I just wieghed myself and apparently im 168lbs right now which is pretty big for me (im Around 5"8 i think, last i checked anyway, even though im 20 im still growing unlike all my friends so im not totally sure) My problem this year is just that ive had to work my ass off for university (By my low low standards its been a lot of work anyway), so ive had no time for exercise or eating right, loads of soda (to stop me passing out at 3am in the Linux lab mostly), loads of take out, loads of snacks and crap food like white toast and stuff just because thats all ive had time for.

Now the trouble is getting back into good habits for October

...and obviously a lot of people have different body types, endo, meso, and all points in between. So why are you posting your particular eating habits as some sort of "advice"? Regardless of whether or not you put on pounds, that shit isn't healthy. There are these funny things called vitamins and minerals that the body needs for it's various functions. Enjoy your upcoming bout with a urinary tract infection.

Well to get things back to oli (you are freaking hot) and everyone else who's posted their weghtloss stories. I must say, congratulations and thank you as well. I know it may sound silly to say that these lkinds of posts help give me a little confidence and motivation when I'm down, but they do. It really helps me stick to my goals and have my own success in the future knowing others have done it too and whatnot. Meh, it's hard to explain.

People who just go off saying that losing large amounts of weight is "simple" and "do this and this and this DUH". Don't quite realize the rocky start it takes for some people. As long as they do keep pushing themselves though it is very simple to maintain afterwards and keep going. They just need that push to roll the boulder down the hill. So I hope some of you think twice before posting the "Shut up and do it" kind of things. That's far from encouraging, while it is realization, you don't help anyone out by making them look stupid.

Anyways, I'm working on this myself and can't wait till I can have a post of my own. I'm just starting out though and around 275lbs hoping to eventually get down to oli's size. So simliar. Once again, congratulations to everyone who's managed to do it. Now one just has to keep like that and enjoy life. :p

It's not advice, I'm just saying how much I hate bullshit diets. If people would exercise more, they'd be able to eat more.

And actually that list was not exactly normal, I'm more likely than not recently to NOT have the donut for lunch, and have nothing but the soda. So basically no breakfast or lunch at least half the time, although I do eat more or less freely when I get off work. My appetite just isn't there. It may be because my body clock is screwed up and I'm more likely to eat late at night than in the morning, but whatever.

One of friends is ripped as hell, and NEVER worked out in his life, and his little brother, only 12 is already getting ripped! He's got the chest, abs, and arms definition showing. It has to be genetics right? His father isn't big though.=\

Watching my weight is something I've never had to worry about. I can eat pretty much anything and stay slim. The unfortunate downside is junk food, particually Coke/soft drink, can cause my face to flair up with acne. So I've cut out most of the soft drink out of my diet (I used to drink 1-2 a day) and just drink water with all my meals and have Coke every now and then as a treat. So my face has stayed pretty much all clear except for the occasional pimple.

I played Rugby in high school and was in pretty good shape. However, after school finished I stopped doing exercise all together and actually LOST weight! So there wasn't that much incentive to continue exercising as I was still slim. However, I have started jogging recently. I want to get back into weights training again too soon and just basically tone and build some muscle. I'm actually trying to gain weight again.. which can sometimes be harder then losing weight.

So you eat nothing for breakfast, eat nothing for lunch- safe for a coke, and then eat a fuckload of really unhealthy stuff for dinner.

That's not good man, you should really consult a dietician or even just your doctor if you won't take our word for it.

Yea... it may be nice to be thin, but hell -- that's got to be doing all sort of damage to your body that you might not be able to reverse. I'd suggest the same. *_*

been holding steady at this weight for the last year and a half i think. i work out regularly, although i took this whole week off since getting the car. i will never go over 160lb again. i realize that the NE is part of the problem. during winter, you can't help but pack on pounds since you're stuck indoors. but here in miami, i'm out and about everyday, and my metabolism stays up, and thus the weight down. :) PEACE.

Oh yeah, as Mike Works pointed out, eat regularly, it helps burn fat more than starving yourself. When you eat sporadically, your body consumes itself if you get hungry and don't feed. But if you took that one big meal and split it up into 3 small portions that you ate throughout the day, your body will simply adjust to the smaller portions and thus not start cannibalizing itself. And you'll get real weight loss, not the fluctuating mess you might experience.

BTW, that's something that's not pushed enough. You can shrink your stomach. You don't need staples or surgery. Just cut back portions. Yes, you will feel hungry, but after a week of eating smaller portions, your body will adjust, and then eating those jumbo meals will feel unnatural. I used to be a value meal mofo. I'd eat a few large portions in the day. But then I broke it down, and now I can't even finish a Medium value meal anymore. I usually scarf the burger, then end up throwing away half the fries. Fast food in general has lost its appeal. The convenience is the only thing that makes me buy the stuff anymore. PEACE.

No kidding. I eat more food than him, eat more often than he does, and yet I consume less calories, hold a drastically improved metabolism, and I'm not as likely to be subjected to some fun little surprises when I get older.

Starving yourself for 2/3rds of the day and then eating the caloric equivolent of a day's intake isn't anything to be proud of at all.

True. It confuses the hell out of your system since your body thinks you're starving, thus storing what you do eat as more fat than it normally would as a protective measure.
