MLB The Show probably isnt being announced due to the Player lockout, but TLOU factions or the remake skipping 2021 altogether gives me hope that it might be next gen only.

Jason Schreier who leaked the TLOU remake said the remake was for PS5.

The idea was to expand upon some of the company’s most successful franchises and the team began working on a remake of the 2013 hit The Last of Us for the PlayStation 5.

For their first solo project, Mumbauer and his crew wanted to pitch something that would be well received by their bosses at Sony. Recognizing the risks and expense involved with developing a new game from scratch, they decided to focus on remaking older games for the new PlayStation 5.
Hermen Hulst, the former head of Guerrilla Games, was named head of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios in November 2019. He thought the remake project was too expensive, according to people familiar with the matter, and asked why the planned budget for T1X was so much higher than remakes Sony had made in the past. The reason was that this one was on a brand new graphical engine for the PlayStation 5.
All of this leads me to believe that TLOU remake might actually be next gen only.

MLB The Show is a different story. They added no real upgrades last year aside from 4k 60 fps. Even Fifa and NBA 2k devs were able to upgrade player models and hair, and they came out 6 months before MLB The Show.

Will MLB The Show get an upgrade this year? A next gen only version is probably wishful thinking but maybe the player models get a next gen boost like they did in fifa and NBA?

Hell, I would like them to at least achieve what they promised back in 2013 when they first revealed MLB the Show for the PS4.

But they never got there 8 years later in MLB the Show 21.

This in 2021 simply isnt good enough.

TLOU Remake, if exists, yes.

MLB The Show, no, not for another year or two depending on when they retire the PS4 when software sales slow, and new gen console sales grow.

Just like every gen with sports titles.

It would be weird for the PS4 to get a TLOU remake when the remaster has been released there as well.
I felt like the idea behind the PS5 remake for Naughty Dog ended up about the team getting familiar with the PS5 hardware while at the same time not taking to the trash all the work another studio did on the project.

MLB is going to be cross gen this year and possibly 2023. After than it goes full "next gen".

why on earth does TLOU need a remake? i could understand maybe another remaster to update visuals and performance to make use of PS5 hardware just like how we got a PS4 remaster but the game itself doesn't need changed. The gameplay is still enjoyable and story is just as good as it was.

probably that Druckmann trying to go back and rewrite shit to fit in with the bullshit in part 2.

They already have a TLOU remaster for PS4, the remake (assuming it exists) will be PS5 only.

MLB wanted to make the series multiplatform to reach more players and sell more. To make MLB next gen only would be a dumb move because over 80% of the active playerbase or so still didn't jump to the next gen.

why on earth does TLOU need a remake?
felt like the idea behind the PS5 remake for Naughty Dog ended up about the team getting familiar with the PS5 hardware while at the same time not taking to the trash all the work another studio did on the project.

It exists because some folks from the Sony Visual Arts Group, basically an animation support team who works in many top AAA games including the top Sony IPs, wanted to make their own projects as lead studio instead of being a support team making only animations. So they created Sony's 2nd San Diego studio.

First they pitched Sony to make CG movies for cinema and tv using assets from the cinematics and Sony told them nope, and asked them to focus on making games. Then they thought about making their own games, but since they were an animation team and lacked staff from the other gamedev areas they thought it was going to be easier to get greenlighted a remaster or a remake from Sony, and also that would be easier for them to do. They first thought about remaking the first Uncharted for PS5 reusing part of the stuff they made to pitch an Uncharted CG movie, but thought the gameplay was too outdated and since they lacked programmers and designers they moved to a TLOU1 remake because its gameplay was less outdated, and thought it would be a good idea to make this remake to bundle it with the PS5 version of TLOU2.

Sony greenlighted the project. Some time later Hermen Hulst was promoted to be the head of PlayStation Studios, didn't like the project of the remake and thought they were spending too much money. He asked ND to switch from their role of providing material and overviewing the remake to be the lead studio of the remake until they completed what remained of development, and asked this new San Diego team to switch their role from being the studio lead of the remake to go back to their support role.

The remake only took a small team inside ND. In addition to this, since TLOU2 they are supposed to be working at least in the TLOU MP game, the TLOU2 PS5 version, overviewing the outsourced U4 remaster & port, overviewing the tv show (+Druckmann helping) and making an Uncharted spin-off codeveloped with Bend Studio (they also helped them with the TLOU MP, both studios helped each other for decades) that may be cancelled now since apparently Bend moved to work on a new IP.

MLB will be like every other sports game and release cross gen for another 3 years or more

It’s no longer a prestige title for sony at this point so cutting off revenue makes no sense.

If they are released in 2022, then both will probably be cross-gen.

If it is 2023, then only MLB the show be cross-gen.

If it is 2024, neither.

This remake is said to look a lot better and that's the main point of a remake, to update the visuals or in some cases the gameplay

TLOU PS5 only. The Show will be cross but they really need to make next gen show that difference. They should offer a 1080p 120 FPS mode or even 1440 if they can squeeze it out. Let’s get some next gen features

Both will be cross-gen.

MLB is a sports game, and they try and hit as many platform as possible - hence it now being on Xbox. No way they ditch the 120+ million PS4s just yet.
As for TLOUR, given how simply unnecessary it remake is, it will clearly be cross gen because they're clearly going for a multi-media push with the TV Show and game(s). Having a PS5-only release doesn't make sense if you're trying to capitalise off of that kind of exposure: you want to hit as many consoles as possible. "Loved the hit new HBO TV Show? Play the new remake and the sequel and see the whole story!". I'd expect it to be packaged with TLOUII, and the package will have the new Factions game, which is how they'll sell it all again to existing PS4 owners.

Only the PS5 can handle the amount of retconned wokeness Druckman has planned for the TLOU Remake. I expect a 10 hour campaign as Abby’s dad where I’m made to have feels for his plight as a single father with flashbacks to his wife dying during a QTE childbirth scene delivering the aforementioned jacked heroine (who will also replace feature prominently on the cover occupying 95% of the real estate).

I’d wager both will be cross gen. It makes sense to have the tlou 1 remake and tlou2 on PS4. Especially when we still have people even on an enthusiast forum like this saying they still can’t legitimately buy a ps5. What hope does a casual?

TLOU remake has to be PS5 only, right? Otherwise what is the point of remaking it?

The Show will be cross platform for a while still. MLB seems to control that and they want it on more platforms.

SlimySnake SlimySnake quick tip - the thread titles asks if the games will cross gen, but the poll asks if they not be cross gen.. bit confusing to flip the question, might wanna change one of them to simplify the question.

The entire point of the TLOU remake is to make a PS5 version of the game and sell it alongside a Part II PS5 port. So nah.

Also yes MLB will be cross gen. MLB 14, 15, and 16 were PS3 and PS4. MLB 21, 22, and 23 will be PS4 and PS5.

why would the Remake of TLOU have to be ps5 only? they are just using TLOU2 type assets and engine so it will look as good as TLOU2. yes Remastered is already on there but what does that have to do with it...

I see them doing a collection like Legacy of Thieves with TLOU1 and 2 together for PS4 and PS5.

If TLOU Remake is supposed to get it on par with TLOU2, then there's really not much of an actual reason it couldn't be cross-gen.

Guess it just depends on what Sony wants to do. I don't think it'll make a huge difference either way if the project is as it was rumored.

It was cross gen PS3/PS4 for three years.

Yeah but the ps4 version got some pretty decent upgrades from year one. Last years version was a carbon copy of the ps4 version. It was THE laziest sports port of the year. Even Madden got some next Gen upgrades. Imagine a first party developer phoning in next Gen while fucking EA of all companies puts on the work. Embarrassing.

I see. I got confused. I guess it's apt considering how confusing Sony's cross gen strategy is. ;p

The business idea is to re-sell both TLOU remake and TLOU2 remaster on PS5. I doubt they will make it cross gen, but who knows. From the rumors and articles apparently its PS5 only. We know for sure they're not doing a TLOU2 Director's Cut because they've said it will not have any DLC. But a regular remaster seems inevitable.

Probably will be something like this:
  • The Last of Us Director's Cut - PS5 $50
  • The Last of Us Director's Cut - PS5 Ultimate Edition $70
    • includes The Last of Us Part II Remastered - PS5
Basically same as what they did with Spider-man: Miles Morales and Spider-man Remastered. I suppose they could make the TLOU remake a PS4 PS5 cross gen release, but I doubt it. Upgrade path? Who the fuck knows.

Of course the last of us remake will be PS5 only. It's literally already remastered on ps4..
They already have a TLOU remaster for PS4, the remake (assuming it exists) will be PS5 only.

I don't disagree that it will likely only be on PS5, I do however disagree that the remaster existing is a reason.

FFVII remaster exist on PS4, so does its remake. That has nothing to do with a remake...like zero. I highly doubt the remaster existing on PS4, by default means the remake would be on PS5, it sounds like it being on PS5 has more to do with timing based on how many units will be sold of PS5 by then or something.

why on earth does TLOU need a remake? i could understand maybe another remaster to update visuals and performance
Well you need to understand that they can update the visuals and perfrom....... sooooooo you fucking get why one is needed ,yet question why one is needed too? hmmmm.

So a remake can do more in terms of a updates vs a remaster and its going to likely be almost 10 years by the time the remake even releases, I'd say a remake makes more sense. I don't see how can understand the reason for a remaster, yet argue against a remake that does more.
probably that Druckmann trying to go back and rewrite shit to fit in with the bullshit in part 2.

Not sure what you mean even slightly.

Joel kills doctor, Doctor's daughter comes back and kills him.

Thats it.

I don't really see what would be needed to actually be re-written unless you've never played the first game or didn't get the first game. You don't think its a bit odd we had no fucking choice with the doctor? That doesn't seem strange to you in that game? lol For the longest time, many believed joel would die either by someone who knew the doctor or even Marlene's family as they are 2 people killed at the end with no choice in the matter, I felt it was pretty fucking obvious its sequel might have to do with segments you don't control that result in a key person dying..... if you didn't get that, it doesn't mean they'd need to rewrite it in crayon or make a pop up book for you or something, it means you don't understand the first game and believe the second game is not connected and needs something to connect them.....it doesn't lol

From 1 to 2 makes perfect sense and I see nothing that would need to be rewriten.

Can't say for sure.

Remaster and Remake are different things. Besides, new Sony route. They still want PS4 install base.

Could be. With the rumor about using The Last Of Us 2 assets, engine etc, would make sense and is feasible.

why would the Remake of TLOU have to be ps5 only? they are just using TLOU2 type assets and engine so it will look as good as TLOU2.

Maybe they want to see what they can do with next gen only conapts. and not hold back the development. Who knows.

Bro, they only have 10 actual months to develop each title, the brunt of that development was during the COVID lockdowns. It was less to do with “lazy” and more to do with an already tight schedule marred by COVID combined with multiplat as well.

And before you mention EA, they have been third party, develop it Florida which did not face lockdowns or mandates like CA still is, and they still get accused of same old shit as well.

FFVII remaster and FFVII remake are very different games. One looks ancient and the other one looks very modern. FFVII is a PS1 game that many people asked to remake it during many years.

TLOU, TLOU remaster and TLOU remake pretty much will be essential the same game and would look pretty similar compared to the FFVII case. Nobody asked for a TLOU remake. Even Sony seems to acknowledge, because if what Jason said was true, the San Diego team pitched it as part of a bundle with the TLOU2 PS5 version, instead of pitching it to sell it independently.

The rumor mentioned the remake as a PS5 only title. To remake it makes little sense, but to release it on PS4 makes even less sense having the remaster there.

And San Diego Studio is like 75-100 people.

Meanwhile I bet like 500 people work on FIFA.

You forgot PC...

I'm definitely down for a replay of both games when the remake of TLOU comes out but man that's a fucking enormous undertaking to redo the original with TLOU2 asset quality, I mean there's some pretty big detailed for the time areas to completely fill out, but yeah I'd love to replay it again

TLOU remake is viable for PS5 only because remakes are lower budget.
