Xbox LIVE Indie Games - The June 2011 Thread

Righteous Axe out now for 80msp. A guitar controller-enabled horizontal shooter. Actually works surprisingly well, it uses the guitars tilt sensor for aiming/movement. If you fire up it pushes you down and vice versa. I'm not sure exactly where her hit box is though, seems like legs are safe but everything above is vulnerable? It also has drop-in co-op where P2 gets a piggyback ride from P1...

oh wow, that gameplay looks fun as hell, and the game looks great too. I've been slacking on my xbox indie backlog but that one is going straight to #1 when it comes out

Thanks for all the support so far!

I wanted to make a game that was old school at heart but in the style of a PS1 Psygnosis classic, in terms of colors, graphic design, and effects, mashed up with some of the visual styling of Homeworld. I had previously worked on Homeworld: Cataclysm as cinematics director as well as concept artist so some of that experience crossed over in developing the look.

We were very fortunate to get Chris Chudley on board to do the music. I think I've heard the various Geo Wars themes more times than is healthy and my logic was if I wasn't sick of the music in those games after more than 1000 listens then he was the guy I wanted to do the soundtrack.

I'm hoping to try to assemble some "making of" material and will post it here if that is cool with the mods. Beyond this, obviously looking forward to Dream Build Play judging and getting the game out there.

Wait, so if Orbitron doesn't "win" in Dream Build Play, it won't be released?
The game looks awesome..so it better be released or else I'll ask mods to ban you after harassing me and sending sexual-pictures to my inbox....or something. :p

Game looks AMAZING! Will be buying it immediately on release.

What? No, the game will get released one way or the other but Dream Build Play serves a few purposes.

First is the thrill of the competition with other great developers and the hope of coming in the top 20.

Second is that MS gets to look at all the games submitted and may offer any of the top 20 an XBLA publishing agreement.

Third is even if the game doesn't win or gets an XBLA publishing agreement but appears in the top 20 it gets a good deal of media exposure.

All these are positives for an Xbox indie developer, so we'll see what the response is to the game over the next little while and make up our minds how we want to do the release.

Out now for 240msp, Sum Fighter. A puzzle game that combines the gameplay of Blocksum with the vs. combat of Puzzle Fighter. And does so with XBLA quality production values (fully animated intro, polished art style, voice acted tutorial). Quality game any puzzle fan should check out.

Warm Machine I noticed your game yesterday and was one I posted on Matt Doucettes (of Xona games) wall as one that stands out. My first thought when I saw it was Uridium for some reason

I have not looked through everything on the dreamplay entry list but here are some other videos to check out.

Mega Shooter looks cool, the Chibi's Escape game could use a little bit of lighting, looks like adding random lightning effects or lighting would increase how dramatic it looks, right now it just kind of looks too dark. The Super Sprint clone looks fun enough but didn't see if it was doing anything new or not.

If I am honest I don't think games that are 2-4 players will sell well on XBLIG. I may be wrong though. I think that's what Chibi's Escape was aiming at.

I'd actually like a Super Skidmarks game on XBLIG, glad there is a Qix game though.

Spirit of Khon looks very ambitious, the animation where you have some sort of spirit help fling you up looks like a crucial piece of the game, the boss fight near the end of the trailer looks pretty epic. These games are looking great, I think this will be the best year for XBLIG yet. Hopefully the devs can put together some sort of Summer Uprising like they did in the winter.

Lots of good looking games coming to DBP this year. Just read on Twitter that there are 154 entries now!

BTW, Chris Chudley updated his SoundCloud with two Orbitron: Revolution tracks...

http://soundcloud.com/audioantics/sets

If you have never been to check out his page he has most of his catalogue available from GeoWars, PGR, Boom Boom Rocket and more.

Have you guys looked at PC?

Well, this is really weird..
I downloaded the trial for Sum Fighter. Looks great and the concept's ace; so why not....but I can't play it. I mean, the game loads and everything looks great; yet for some reason there's lag; even in the menu. And in-game the cursor just starts randomly going up and down...all the way.

Deleted it, downloaded it again and still the same; and it's the only game that this happens. :/

Since there's talk of Dream.Build.Play. and it looks like a few developers are around, the XBLIG community is putting together its own competition of sorts called the Summer Uprising (similar to the Winter Uprising promo last year). It's a collaborative promo and they're looking to for more submissions before voting begins to decide which games are included. You can check out the current submissions and join in here: http://www.liveindiegaming.com/UprisingNominees.aspx .

Nope, I'm not involved in it. Orbitron: Revolution (and some of the other DBP entries mentioned already) looks like a great title to be included though.

Some of those games are already out/due out next week =/

This should be good though, with the new release date thing they'll be able to do this properly instead of relying on things coming through peer review at the right time, it means they can hold off publicising all the games that are gonna be in it until they're actually finished, too. The IGWU was a great idea but it did suffer at the hands of peer review and announced games not being ready.

The DBP games (and the possible Summer Uprising) Games do look quite awesome. I'm glad to see talent taking off on XBLIG!

On the topic of current games, Sum Fighter is just fantastic. The stories are goofy, but fun, the "hidden characters" are enjoyable to play as, along with the main cast, the animations for their attacks are well done... it's a very well polished game. The only slightly glitchy thing I've encountered is the fact that you can Re-Re-Re-Re confirm your character select choice over and over again, and pausing after a round victory does nothing (the game will continue on to the next screen.) Those are pretty minor concerns (sorry fernoca, wish I could help with your issue! :( )

I've gotten a few local matches in with family, and they enjoy it, as well. It really could be a Cartoon Network game spinoff, or some other modern childrens cartoon. Minus the odd amount of Blood on defeated opponents, lol (Or maybe they're getting tomatoes tossed at them? Spray paint?).

There's so few puzzle-fighter-a-like games that actually work, so I'm happy to see this one hit so many of the right buttons.

Yeah, I questioned that too. Apparently the sign-up list has everyone who has thrown their name in the hat - but not all are eligible. There will be some culling before games are voted on.

that looks... awesome. I wonder when all these games come out :(

Yeah it'll be scattered - some may be finished, others not. Some may even get the Arcade treatment and then have to bunker down.

Aren't there some block puzzler fans in here? Space Jelly looks nutty hard (but nice).

Hacotama looks beautiful...that guy is insanely talented for pushing that perf out of XNA

It looks to me that he is using crazy amounts of instancing and a very simple shader set. This is really smart though considering it is all he needs from his design.

Prismatic Solid doesn't get the respect it deserves for what it does on the rendering front.

The runes in the Doom Destiny trailer also appear in my game. I thought my artist created them herself! SHE IS FIRED FOREVER

In other news, holy shit at the DBP entries this year.

This is looking very good. Have you set a release date target in your head or applying no pressure and will release it when it's finished.
