Yakuza 5 |OT| Rage Your Dreams

What's the best way to earn money? I need a lot for a certain late game sidequest.

Do you have
Purgatory opened? If so there's a casino in there. If you have it use a million yen to buy 10k chips at that casino. Now go save your game. Go back into the casino and play Baccarat. Put 10k on Tie. If you hit it it'll give you an 8x payout. If you don't hit then just reload your save until you finally do. Go cash out all of those chips on Platinum plates. Once you sell them at a pawn shop you'll get around 9m yen.

And that's the platinum for me. Ex-hard wasn't very hard but more tedious as I held down R1+X for hours as I skipped large swathes of conversation.

Looking forward to Yakuza 0 this year.
Grats, and holy shit never knew R1+x to skip ahhhhhhhh.

Thanks, this worked!

Shinada's chapter isn't very good at giving you opportunities to do the side quests. It sticks you with that loan shark for most of it, blocking your access to side stories when he's with you. I usually prefer to hop between main story and side stuff but instead I'm having to mop it all up at once before I finish.

I didn't like that either. So i started side quests the moment i was free to do anything

Back to playing Yakuza 5. I'm giving my PS3 to my girlfriend afterwards so I'm determined to finish it now. I stopped just at Shinada's bit before and got distracted by Xenoblade X for 60 hours (still need to finish that) but now I'm at part 4 of his story.

Really liking Shinada. Though it's difficult to do his side stuff when they force you with the loan shark. Baseball is fun to do. Maybe it is just me but I can relate more to Shinada's story and that's probably why I'm enjoying his part. Plus baseball is fun.

Shinada's combat style sucks so much. Taking forever in the Colosseum because he can't do any damage and he doesn't have a counter.

It's really bad. He's not fun to play at all. Even worse is that they made him a "weapons expert", which basically means that they gimped everyone else's weapon capabilities to make this guy average when he does manage to get a hold of a weapon.

Wait, he does have a counter. Except his counter is worthless because everyone immediately escapes the grab. It would be nice to put his weapons skills to work, but most of these tournaments are unarmed.

I finished Kiryu's chapter last night... so good. Loved the entire chapter.

I love how they use different characters in this game, its completely revitalised the series and works from a storytelling level as well as in gameplay.

This game is funnier than past chapters, I remember Y1-3 being quite serious. It's cool they don't take everything so seriously.

The only complaint I have really is that technically the PS3 is not up to delivering this game at a standard it needs to be at. There's pretty bad aliasing, shimmering and its in 720p/30fps. So many cutscenes that are rendered by the in game engine have problems with things in the background shimmering. Ah well. I am still loving this game.

Also I suppose Nagasugai as a city wasn't that interesting and didn't really have enough activities to do. Am looking forward to seeing the other cities.

Like others said, he needs a few upgrades but he seems to be the grabbing/weapons guy

His throw animations give him lots of invincibility (which is useful in big crowds), he'll get upgrades that allow him to cancel his rush combo into grabs and he'll also later be able to quickstep into grabs. He also has a weaker and less abusable version of Kiryu's bounding heat throws too that is still really good for bosses with armor/no flinch on hit.

He does have that running tackle for crowd control but I found that to be mostly useless; most bosses will counter it and you'll lose health, and I personally found it pretty unreliable.

I got nothing to say about how his weapons work. I found his pipe super useless in Hard (it does too little damage) and I was struggling to get any money with him in his chapter so I never bothered with buying others.

Funny you mention not having money for him, when i played like the 4th or 5th encounter I had on the streets gave me a platinum plate and then I got another one not too late after that.

same here. always look for rich bastards when you're on the streets. they like to drop them. he likes to hang around near ebisu pawn.

I'm currently in Part 2, Ch. 3. After i meet the remaining characters, is there a point before the endgame, where i can return to all the previous locations (including the mountain village) to finish up any open side and substories? I want to 100% everything on my first run and then just do a critical path ex-hard run on Premium New Adventure.

Does this even count as a spoiler? For emotional impact, maybe.

Haruka holds Kiryu's hand again once you get her mood to C in Premium Adventure. I'm a little emotional, haha.

pretty sure you can get 100% on your initial save/premium adventure. just don't start ng+ and overwrite your clear save. you can return to previous areas in the last chapter.

Finished the main campaign last night, the fight with square face outside the Millennium Tower was the most frustrating as almost every hit was countered with stun and heat sink. As to the story
HAHA, IT'S ME, THE GUY THAT WAS KILLING PEOPLE IN PURGATORY BECAUSE I WAS CRAZY but suddenly I'm OK and even a little bit cocky. What?

Still, I enjoyed the run up to the end even if some characters seemed to change personalities a bit.

I have a New Drinking game guys. Drink every time a Yakuza 5 character says dreams.

Also, I think Shinada is the weakest Yakuza character in terms of story and fighting. I'll write an entire thing on Yakuza 5 when I'm done the game

You'll be dead before the end of the game if you drink like that.

For some reason i might wanna try this drinking game. But yeah i agree that you might be dead even before the end of the game.

I already noticed the 'dreams' theme in Part 1. I think it goes full force by part 3 so that's probably where you'd actually die. I'm up for this drinking game though.

I'm stuck on Shinada's story. Need money for the cab to see Manabe. Help! Looked up guides online and they don't explain anything.

Thanks! I intend to finish all the side and substories for each character before advancing to the next one, but i don't want to wear myself out right now with all the hostess stuff, restaurant checklists, gambling and so on, so i plan on returning to that when all the characters join up in the last chapter.

FWIW you can advance to P2C4 and still do the mountain quests, actually makes it easy to hit the restaurants because you can just never use healing items on the mountain

I guess I have terrible luck with money/item drops lol.

I actively went out of my way to get into random encounters with all of the characters (so I could level them) and never got a single platinum plate.

Go to ebisu pawn on the east side of those 9 blocks... to the west of the park. See if you have any doodads you can sell
Thank you so much dude, and thanks for everyone replying. Been stuck on this shit first hours lol. So use to RPGs where you can sell items anywhere.

I played Yakuza 4 but it's been years. Thanks everyone! :)

Just like to mention, the top seller list in EU/AUS updated. Yakuza 5 is No2! Behind FF7

Great work everyone!

Kiryu is proud of you.

Just finished it. Loved it. Ending was great, but also lacklustre. But jeez the stuff in the finale was great.

Shinada was surprisingly great.
His story was weirdly good. Like his arc as a character was great and I felt quite warmed by him as a character at the end. Especially when he gets the phone call after the fight with Baba.

Though it feels weird that Shinada
got the best fight of the first 4 parts with Daigo. Shame about the music being cut probably due to licensing reasons.

All the final fights were amazing.
While not strictly finale, the Kiryu, Saejima, Watase and the other guy. It was a pretty cool fight. I wasted all my healing items on the Kiryu Watase fight, jeez I made a mistake.
Shinada's fight was cool. Shinada really likes baseball to the degree of starting a fight with Baba because of it.
Kiryu and Akiyama being awesome was awesome.
Akiyama's fight was difficult, but it was awesome.
Saejima probably got the best fight in the entire game. No way they'd kill Majima off-screen. He was underused but he certainly got a killer fight. Those QTEs, that music and the final heat move where Saejima just straight up grabs the knife, fucking A.

And the final fight.
The reveal, REALLY LAME. My reaction was "oh man who could it be?!" and then it was just Aizawa. Eh. But fucking hold up. Like no. It doesn't matter. Because THAT FINAL FIGHT WAS AMAZING. And it felt more intense because I WASTED ALL MY HEALING ITEMS ON WATASE EARLIER AND DIDN'T BUY ANYMORE (because I just skipped to the end).
Best fight. Oh my god it was amazing. I thought the Majima fight was great, but nope. It took 3 tries, my arm started to hurt because MASHING QTEs. The QTEs were awesome mind. The fight transitioned well from the main room to outside (which was exactly what I thought would happen as soon as Aizawa throws you out the room). I got good to beat Aizawa. Though by got good I just tiger parried. It felt clutch, it was clutch. But seeing as Kiryu was fighting with quite a bad wound, it was understandable I was clutching it.

Now the worst thing about the ending.
Fucking Haruka. You had one job. You ruined everything. That was annoying. Why did you do that. Nope. Way to completely invalidate everything everyone is doing for you.
I get why she did it? She saw Kiryu and realised "family" (which I might add was a really cool transition back into the action, seeing Akiyama and Kiryu fighting on TV).
But it's fine I guess. Because that after credits moment with Haruka and Kiryu was sweet, I shed a tear.

So basically, the lame final reveal of Aizawa and Haruka's stunt was what made the ending lacklustre. But at least Aizawa made up for it with an amazing fight.

tl;dr Yakuza 5 is the swansong the PS3 deserves.

Hope this means it did good and Sega does something about that European release of Yakuza 0 which we know nothing about. At least I still think it is a mess.
