Fighting Games Weekly | Feb 3-9 | Why doesn't Bungie make fighting games?

What if the Xbone is price dropped, though? It's obvious that there's a drop incoming for it if the rumors for it mean anything.

I think KI and BBCP will have more or less the same amount of entrants for it. KI will have less because of it being a new game, added with the Xbone price + MS hyperbole people use to justify their not purchases imo.

I mean the general reception of KI as a game overall is just a 'meh' at this point for spectators. Hopefully it being a full game come March will bring the attention it needs.

I know that, you can read my other post which specifies I am taking about two different generations of EVO here.

ST/3S/MVC2/CvS2 era versus SF4/MVC3/NRS/KOFXIII era.

Its probably going to be even more of a difference once the next generation of fighting games kick off with the PS4. Hell you can already see the effect with KI, newer version was guaranteed before the game was even announced!

Arbitrary differentiation between "eras" for what reason?

KI is "meh" for most spectators because most spectators haven't played the game - for obvious reasons all ready mentioned.

wrong.

Its meh because the only thing you can tell if a good action is done is the little exclamation point on top of their heads during a combo.

The neutral game matters less since every character has to play the combo game. So its no longer about watching the neutral game but more about watching what happens during a combo and combos look all similar due to the KI system.

The most hype thing in KI is counter breakers, everything else is just boring to watch.

KI's graphics are a real issue for people (like me) who would like to be able to give the game a chance. It's both hard to tell what's going on and painful to watch after a short while.

Are you really suggesting that actively playing a game, or having played a game, doesn't provide any form of investment to spectators watching said game? Feeling the consequences of being Locked-Out or Counter-Broken yourself, for example, provide the necessary impetus for emotional involvement when spectating - you understand it on a different level when you witness it happen to someone else. Simply understanding how it works mechanically isn't enough.

Rebel Up Super Arcade in SoCal is TODAY, February 8th!
Stream: http://www.twitch.tv/numakie

We'll be streaming Aqua Pazza, Vampire Savior, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Melty Blood. Swapped around the times a bit so we won't have to stop Melty Blood in the middle to show JoJo's, as we'll be going into JoJo's right at the end of Vampire Savior.

The stream schedule should look something like this(actually tournament start time would be a bit different, keep that in mind):

Aquapazza: 4:30pm PST/7:30pm EST

Vampire Savior: 6:30pm PST/9:30pm EST

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: 8:30~pm PST/11:30~pm EST

Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code: 9:30~pm PST/12:30~pm EST

I'll post updates when the tournaments start.

People like watching professionals play games because they're not good at the game the professional is playing.

If no one is playing something than there's no 'hype' to be generated. For instance, ST's gonna be at EVO, right? ST's gonna be hype because at this point everyone and their sister has played ST. Same with AE and Marvel. Notoriety matters. Not neutral game because the majority of the viewerbase (monsters) have no idea what the term 'neutral' game even means. All they care about is hype and salt.

I guarantee you if KI was theoretically a multiplatform game that was accessible to everyone more people would be excited in playing it regardless of the 'neutral game'

I have actually never played ST, but I still get hyped watching it. From the Evo exhibitions to the old japanese footage. Its a legitimately a fun game to watch (minus thawk option select).
Also, having more people play the game doesn't make the game more hype. Look at Injustice early on. Everybody was playing it. Was it ever super hype outside of the NRS community and a few others? Remember this was the time when Superman, Black Adam and Deathstroke were all amazing (then DS got nerfed so fast).

You don't need to play KI to know the feeling of being baited. GG/BB/P4A has those exact same feelings where you burst (combo break) and got baited. I don't need to play KI to know that feeling because its not the first game to do such a thing. Hell even DOA has that as well to an extent.

Yes playing the game helps, but its not the largest factor. I bet most of the stream monsters/viewers have not even touched KOF13 prior to EVO 2012 and yet that was hype.

I know that the Valentine from GG2: Overture and Ramlethal Valentine from GGXrd are apparently different characters but related (in that they are
clones of Aria?
).

But I wonder if she will use Valentine's theme from Overture (or an altered version). I say this only because Holy Orders III is making a comeback which means Arcsys may include more throwbacks to Overture in GGXrd.

It sounds pretty damn good imo.

I would certainly hope so, she had the best new theme in GG2

edit: and lol at anyone trying to hate on BBCP

Lol, I was wondering why the team choices were so funky.

I think these are the agreed upon points for this particular system

Amaterasu – 3 points Trish– 3 points Dr Strange– 3 points Rocket Raccoon– 3 points Storm– 3 points Shuma– 3 points Taskmaster– 3 points Captain America– 3 points Jill– 3 points Viewtiful Joe– 3 points Haggar– 3 points Modok– 2 points She-Hulk– 2 points Fire Brand– 2 points Spider Man– 2 points Chris– 2 points Felicia– 2 points Deadpool– 2 points Hulk– 2 points X-23– 2 points Nemesis– 2 points Arthur– 2 points Thor – 2 points Ghost Rider – 1 point Iron Fist– 1 point chun Li – 1 point Phoenix Wright– 1 point Hsien-Ko – 1 point --- Iron Man– 2 points -- New Ryu– 2 points --Tron – 2 point --

It's a 6 point team composition I think.

What is it that bothers you? I've never had issue with it myself, but I have a handful of friends who have said the intense screen shaking makes them nauseous.

Interesting, I was wondering how they enforce character choices. With those restrictions id probably go Hulk/Deadpool/Arthur.

lol rocket raccoon, shuma, modok, hulk, trish, and strange definitely should not be allowed in a "low tier" tournament.

I personally think X-23 and felicia should be one point higher, but thats just me.

I think most impressions like this come from the game in compressed video format, like YouTube or Streaming. The impression isn't nearly as big when it's played locally at 60 fps and don't have to deal with crazy artifacting after a particle explosion.

That makes sense. I did have a friend standing right behind me watching me play it live and he said after a couple rounds he was feeling dizzy though.

I rarely get that kind of thing myself, but I get a little dizzy playing Antichamber. Different things can trigger it in different folks I guess.

Well if you choose those guys then you have to pair them with a 1 point character.

They've been discussing and evolving the 'cost' of each character every time they do it.

Yeah, they did go a bit overboard with the cinematic effects. Shame, because I do like the art style.

Or it's the fact the game animates like a fuckin Speed Racer episode. It looks like shit.

Compressed video on the internet does cause problems with KI's particle effects. It's much easier on the eyes in person. I don't think it's any crazier or hard to spectate than MvC 3 and we all know stream monsters eat that shit up.

every since all the hysterics about the xbox upscaling filter on gaf I can't unsee the crushed blacks and sharpening in KI. I don't think it's the reason the game might be aesthetically unappealing to people, but it's definitely distracting.

I don't think it's the particles that are necessarily the worst during artifacting, it's the model overlap in animations and the general desaturated look of the game that leads to big blocks of black, navy blue and gray.

My friends call BS on me being able to watch UMvC3 with all the shit going on at 240p, but I can still follow everything. KI is squarely in the "unwatchable category because it's just a bunch of blocks mating on the screen.

Welll without high tiers, trish shits on a majority of the cast.
True but so do many of those other characters like MODOK.

I think it's fine that characters like Strange and Amaterasu make it in. Without good supports its hard to make even decent teams. I think Hawkeye should be in as well especially if Taskmaster is in. Ditto on Akuma.

Also where's Wesker? LOL!

Shuma @ 3 points? Da fuck?

So it isn't just me.

A point system for Marvel is really interesting. Though no one should be banned, teams should be 8 points max, and Vergil should be worth 5.

This honestly does make a lot of sense and isn't something I had considered when comparing the two games on a spectating level. Makes sense.

some KOF tournies in Japan also used this system- esp pre-patch arcade KOFXIII.

This makes me sad. That we have to try so hard to figure out why Capcom hasn't expanded/updated Umvc3 in so long. Why? Is it because of the backlash of people who don't even play the game? Is it because of the Disney-Marvel acquisition? Is it because 3.2 million of sales isn't enough to make the franchise profitable?

The fans are there with their money Capcom.

Most likely Marvel. I wouldn't be shocked if Capcom makes the next-gen one Capcom vs Capcom so they don't have to deal with this again- I don't think it would hurt sales that much.

Real what-if , what if they made a Marvel-style Capcom vs SNK?

Zero should be 8 points

He must be point and can't use assists, Once Zero dies, the game is over.

I don't play Marvel, I just hate watching Zeroes

Because working with Marvel, a huge conglomerate movie studio, has become increasingly difficult over the past five years. Not to mention, meeting expectations for their existing franchises/characters.

Along with splitting all the profits with another company because their characters are in the game. There's a good reason Capcom didn't renew the Marvel contract.

But probably not enough to make money off of it if you look beyond the FGC/small people that are still interested, especially after spiting the consumer base with UMvC3.

Point system would probably ban certain teams though.
I think that's the point, without banning characters entirely.
