ESPN's montage was nice, but it shows the goals from the worst angles, wtf??

overall a nice world cup, but I wish germany had been up against a better team in the final

If there is anything I have learnt this world cup.

1. South American players who play in Europe have been infected by the Euro playing style over the South American style. Their game has suffered as a result. South American style is when you weave through players, Euro style is mostly the passing game. Look at how that worked out for Brazil - neymar

2. People will look at leagues beyond Euro leagues for talent going by this world cup.

3. Spanish style of football is essentially dead.

4. Free kicks were a disaster this world cup apart from 1-2 kicks

5. People only care about who scored and how they scored, not who created opportunities to score.

6. Brazil could have been knocked out in group stages if teams knew they were as weak as Germany exposed them to be.

7. Belgium and France look to me as the teams to beat in the next world cup.

8. Germany, Ronaldo and Messi show that you need a team to win a world cup, and no matter how good you are, if the chemistry is not there, neither will be a trophy.

9. GK was amazing this world cup.

10. Players went into a shell in knockout round as compared to Group Stages. Reason why I think is teams waiting to play on penalties. Only way to counter this is the Golden Goal to replace penalties.

11: England football is getting worse by the years.

12: American soccer is getting better

13: Smaller football nations are getting better and creating more upsets (Algeria, Ghana)

14: Costa Rica are never to be underestimated again.

Creativity and culture is not how I would describe that video. Looked like it was made by some guy on youtube. You think Brazil's culture is just them dancing? Where's the creativity in that?

Well, I already said I wasn't a big fan of that montage in particular, for sure they could have thought of something better than the dancing. I was just referring to BBC's approach generally as opposed to the one taken by ESPN (as you were complaining about the ratio of actual football clips in the montage).

Some Statistics of the world cup:

Most Saves Made : Tim Howards (USA) 27

Most Successful Passes Made : Philip Lahm (GER) 562

Most Shots: Karim Benzema (FRA) 33

Most Shots on Target: Karim Benzema (FRA) 25

Most Minutes Played : Pablo Zabaleta (ARG) 720

Most Distance Covered: Thomas Muller (GER) 84 KM

Most Distance Covered in Posession: Philip Lahm (GER) 34.6

Top Speed: Junior Diaz (CRA) 33.8 KMPH

Most Deliveries in Penalty Areas: Lionel Messi (ARG) 26

Most Offsides: Robin Van Persie (NED) 12

We also thought smaller nations got better after 2002. It doesn't mean that much although an upset here and there is always in the cards.

How is it bad when there's more teams involved? I mean, surely the top teams will pull through, like they've always had but atleast it would let the lesser teams around Europe a chance at the spotlight. Us Finns have been somewhat close a few times in the last decade but haven't yet managed to land a sport in the european cup but with the added team limit there's a chance even us might make it.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but just making it in is a humongous(relative naturally) financial boon for the participant nations, the smaller nations would gain a lot of money just by getting in the group stages that would eventually go into making their leagues better.

Finland's okay in my book. Jari Litmanen ofcourse, and I liked Tim Sparv when he was with us.

But I fear we'll get those 1 or 2 groups that just aren't interesting. Much like happens in the CL. 16 team European championship are usually finals from the very first match. But we'll see, maybe it will turn out to be good. Best 3's will qualify for round of 16 as well, so we probably get the likes of good ol' Italy scraping through here and there.

Fantastic tournament, and a good one to be the first one i actually keep up and follow religiously. Good job Brazil you pulled it off.
I'm still happy you got destroyed by Germany though.

Also thanks guys, doubly so for Wes and all those involved with the creation of these threads. The gifs, the salt, the banter, etc. it was great. and thanks for answering any stupid questions I may have had.

Glad to see the American team do well enough to get out of that group and to the round of 16 again. Gotta start somewhere and the future looks bright.

Germany was my favorite to win going through so I am glad to see they won.

3. Spanish style of football is essentially dead.

You mean the Pep-Bayern style? He won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, broke records (longest winning streak in the league, most consecutive wins in the CL,...) and got to the semi-finals in the CL.
Plus, Germany played a similar style just not as offensive and aggressive with less pressure. You guys need to watch FC Bayern play and then realize that Germany is basically FC Bayern. Guardiola is just a very confident manager who thaught that he can win against every team by dominating in possession with very high pressure. But after the big CL-Loss he actually adapted his system to teams that wait for counter-attacks. Bayern played against BVB in the DFB-Pokal final very similar to Germany in the World Cup. Still dominated in possession but played with less pressure and aggression.

So it's not dead. Its just a very risky system for tournaments (cause one little mistake can lead to goals). Löw gave it the adjustment it needed to be viable and strong against modern counter-attacking football which most teams play these days.

Cruyff was already grabbing credits for this. He says Pep basically created 2 consecutive world champions.

Saw it on an Australian forum that Mark Milligan has now been to 3 world cups without playing a single minute. Does anyone have the stats to tell if this is a world record for a non-GK player?

Edit: Never mind. He played in the Chile game and they were talking about the fewest minutes played in 3 world cups.

To all those saying 'see you in 4 years', I say to you that there is a lot of football to be played between now and then.

Internationally there will be Euro 2016 and that is always a high standard of tournament (even higher than the world cup on average) given the competitiveness of the European teams. There will be the standard Copa America which pits the South American teams against each other next year. Also in 2016 will be a one-off Copa Panamericana which will be hosted in America celebrating the centenary of CONMEBOL which will feature all the South American team, USA, Mexico and the best of the rest of the Americas. Also, in 2015 there will be the African Cup of Nations, a tournament where no one knows who will win.

However, the real action will be at club level. Club level football at its best is at a higher standard of play than international football. The players train with each other all year long and the coaches are more equipped to sign the players which most suit their system.

The English premier league has opened up in recent years and their are 5 realistic winners of the title. Players from the world cup which you might like to follow are Robin Van Persie at Manchester United, Alexis Sanchez & Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, Schurrle at Chelsea and some American goalkeeper at Everton.

The Spanish La Liga went from a 2-horse race to a 3-horse race last season with Athletico Madrid winning the title. However, Barcelona & Real Madrid will still be clear favourites. Eyes are especially on Barcelona given their new forward line of Luis Suarez, Neymar & Lionel Messi, which if you saw them play in the world cup you would know that that has great potential.

The German Bundesliga is basically a race for second with Bayern Munich clear favourites however if you were a fan of the way Germany played then watching Mueller, Gotze, Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Neuer playing in the same club might interest you. Throw in Arjen Robben from the Netherlands and Xherdan Shaqiri from Switzerland and it is clear to see why they are favourites.

Nobody cares about Italian Serie A.

However, for the highest standard of football, look no further than the Champions League. The best of each of the European leagues compete in a group then knockout system to be crowned Kings of Europe. Players in this tournament not already mentioned include James Rodriguez, David Luiz & Javier Mascherano.

There will be some type of match being played somewhere in the world every day from now till Russia so come join the Football Thread: Football Thread 2013/14 |OT25| Louis evangaalism strictly prohibited and we will light your path.

Atletico saw an exodus. It will be a tough season for them. They won't defend their title.

Serie A isn't that bad. Roma and Juventus play good football. Milan and Inter will eventually bounce back. And Fiorentina still has Cuadrado, but I doubt he'll stay.

Arsenal are the side I expect things from in the PL. They are doing some great signings for the second year in a row.

Germany vs. Argentina match on Univision Deportes delivers most-viewed WorldCup final in U.S. Spanish-language TV history

· Univision Deportes’ Germany vs. Argentina match averaged 9.2 million P2+ and 5.0 million A18-49

Sunday’s nailbiter final between Germany and Argentina was a World Cup ratings record for ABC/ESPN . The 1-0 victory that brought Germany its fourth World Cup got a 9.7 rating in metered market

Only the 1994 final between Brazil and Italy with its 12.8 and the Round of 16 match between the USA and Brazil (10.4) that same year have ever done better than yesterday afternoon’s game, which was broadcast on ABC. The 1994 World Cup was held in the United States, by the way. Coverage for yesterday’s game played in Rio peaked in the extra time of the game around 2:15 – 2:30 PM PT with a 14.2 rating. The top local market for ABC/ESPN was Washington D.C. which had a 15.4 metered market result. We’ll update with more ratings from yesterday’s match when we get them.

Germany-Argentina, which posted a 13 percent increase over the 2010 Final in South Africa (8.6, Netherlands vs. Spain), ranks as the second-highest metered market rating for any World Cup Final on ESPN/ABC, and the second-highest non-USA World Cup match ever for the ESPN networks.

Top 10 markets for Germany-Argentina: Washington, D.C. (15.4), San Diego (13.4), Los Angeles (13.0), San Francisco (13.0), Orlando (12.6), New York (12.5), Sacramento (12.0), Miami-Ft. Lauderdale (11.5), West Palm Beach (10.8) and Las Vegas (10.7). In addition, 12 markets recorded their highest-rated men’s World Cup match ever on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC: Albuquerque (9.0), Buffalo (8.6), Denver (10.3), Houston (9.5), Indianapolis (9.5), Los Angeles (13.0), Nashville (9.1), Orlando (12.6), Philadelphia (10.5), Sacramento (12.0), San Antonio (10.6) and Washington, D.C. (15.4).

Germany:

In another record-breaking turn, the match scored the biggest ever TV audience in Germany. Overnight ratings have 34.65M tuning into ARD for the final. That beat the 32.57M average of the previous record holder, last Tuesday’s face-off with Brazil. The audience share, however, was slightly lower on Sunday with 86.3% versus Tuesday’s 87.8%. Overnight Stateside ratings will be in from ABC and Univision later in the day.

So, spanish style of football is dead... yeah, sure. Keep telling that to yourselves, guys. Germany won playing a very similar football.

Who are your other teams?

I think only Man City and Chelsea have a chance honestly. Can't see any of the others doing it.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City & United. I don't think you can discount United after one poor season under a poor manager. Mental fuck-ups at Arsenal and then at Liverpool were the only reason neither of those teams won.

No we've already had Golden and Silver Goal and it caused teams to play even more defensively. It's just how it is in the knock out stages and always will be. The teams actually play better than in the Group Stages but it's not as aesthetically pleasing to laymen.

You won't get good free-kicks like we did in the late 90s early 2000s till they revert to heavy balls rather than the beach balls we have today.

I feel kinda empty without the World Cup. It was my first time really getting into it. I had a blast and watched almost every game in the tournament. I think I missed like two. I have a friend who follows the Premier League (whatever the England one is) so I might just watch with them. I'll need to figure out what my nearest MLS team is too.

I was really happy with how the US did. It was super fun to watch and I feel the whole country minus Anne Coulter really rallied around them. Cool stuff.

The coverage will start 9 Am CET tomorrow morning (13 hrs left) when the team arrived at the airport in Berlin. At 10 AM they will arrive at the "Fanmeile" in Berlin after driving with this beauty:

BshRbWMCEAAu0_N.jpg:large

We should petition FIFA to switch the 1994 and 1990 titles between Brazil and Germany.

That way Germany will have won every 20 years (54-74-94-14).

Some of the wording in those articles is confusing to me. It says like it was a record but then it goes on to say it was 2nd or 3rd most watched. Then it says most people who watched a men's soccer game ever but then it's only 2nd to the USA Portugal game.

Very confusing. But still surprising that 1994 is still number one considering population growth between then and now.
