LTTP Max Payne 3

The Good:

This is an awesome game. It excels at every level of a 3rd person shooter and does justice as a Max Payne game. Jumping in without knowing anything except fawn memories of Max Payne 1 & 2. I still remember stepping into a room only to be greeted by bunch of bad guys and your bullet time instinct takes over and you clear the room without a scratch. Well, with Max Payne 3, that feeling was back and it felt exactly the same. And it doesn't get old either. With the new techs, the details and the "realism"are amazing. With your bullet wounds still showing during the cut scenes and I love how your gun just doesn't disappear when you scroll through your weapons. With realistic bullet ballistics, kill cams, blood sprays, destructible environments where paper flies everywhere, it's all there. As for story, nothing new here. I can't say it's great or awful. Actually, the story goes well with the whole self tortured thing. More reason to shoot more bad guys Neo style and that's really what this game is about. But the reason needs to be plausible and it does get the job done.

The Bad:

One word.. CUT SCENES! Holy shit, there are more cut scenes than anything. Not only that, you can't skip through it and have to sit through the stupid blur effects every 5 seconds. A real buzz kill for sure. The cut scenes alone almost broke this game to non playable.

I consider it to be one of the best action games ever made. Loved how the controls/movement of Max felt, and I also appreciated the mixture of scripted action scenarios with the almost spontaneous feel of the moment to moment action given the implementation of Euphoria (I personally chuckled seeing a mob goon fly 20ft after lobbing a grenade his way).

Would love to see Rockstar return to this style of game for a non-GTA title.

Story is bad. Nearly everything is Max's fault for being an incompetent moron. From an unstoppable revenge-machine in the first game to a nonsensical monologuing sad sack in 2 and 3. But they make you watch it. You can't skip the damn cutscenes. People give the bullshit excuse that they're "loading," but no. I refuse to believe a PC game is loading for 5 minutes straight, also: You can quit the game, start it up again, and have that level that supposedly took 5 minutes to load while a cutscene played load in 10 seconds. Funny how that works.

The shootan is ridiculous though.

Yeah, I would replay it but those goddamn cutscenes, ugh.

Makes MGS4 look like a straight 100m dash to the finish in comparison.

Story also wasn't great compared to the first two.

For me it was one of the games of the generation.
The gameplay felt so satisfying, although I could never really get into the mp

Unskippable cut scenes really hurt the game, BUT i would still give the game a 9.5/10 one of my top 3 games ever

OT: i still never got the yacht mission with marcelo and passos, what were they doing? and what did it have to do with max?

Yeah the soundtrack was awesome.. Almost felt like i was in one of Michael Mann's movie.

One scene that is memorial is the stadium scene. I dove and slid sideways all the way down the stairs in bullet time.. fucking sick!

My favorite 3rd-person shooter of all-time. So good. Both original games are still very fun but this one takes it all. Some of the blending of the mechanics like rolling and cover could be a bit better but overall, it's very satisfying.

The biggest compliment I can give this game is I wish Rockstar would take the mechanics and make a completely different game with them with a 90% reduction in cutscenes. Maybe then I'll be able to actually get into a good rhythm with those mechanics without being ripped out of the experience every 2 minutes. So many amazing details in the gunplay + body physics but I can't bring myself to replay it again.

Definitely my favorite shooter of last gen. The game absolutely has too many cutscenes, but you can't deny that some of Max's dialogue was genuinely hilarious.

this is one of my favorites of all time. i feel like reinstalling, but it would take too long. waiting on that google fiber.

easily the best 3rd person shooting mechanics. GTA v comes a far second.

Have finished the game eight times, really incredible game and fun levels outside of the dock sequence and the roof chapter towards the end.

Really don't understand why they didn't patch cutscene skipping into at least the PC version though. Enjoyed the story the first time around but to have to sit through the cutscenes so often is mind-numbing. After the second playthrough I just started reading a book while they were running, lol. Arcade mode makes them amusing though as you can switch in character models.

Advance max is great
Was really disappointed when GTA V didn't implement MP3's unbelievable damage modelling and hit reactions

Never played red dead redemption huh?

GTAV's gunplay mechanics and all that were damn disappointing compared to red dead redemption and Max Payne 3. Which is weird and kind of shitty, but I always figured it was like that because of the size and scope of the V compared to the other two. Like they looked awesome, but they definitely didn't have as much detail and animations. Also the guns sounded and felt much much weaker.

Best third person shooter of last gen, next to Vanquish. Absolutely loved my time with the multiplayer too; so many epic matches before the rocket launcher grinders appeared. Diving everywhere in bullet time, watching each shot pierce against the wall, glass, a face was absolutely mesmerizing.

As said, 3rd person shorter of the generation. Euphoria physics fucking rocks.

But those god damn unskippalbe cut-scenes really damages the game. And it's not for loading (at least the pc version), it's just lazy of the developers. (as proven by many others).

Incredible as a shooter, underrated script, and a killer soundtrack.

Even though it didn't do open-world game numbers for R*, I hope they make MP 4 one day .

Fantastic game. Hope they do MP4 in a US setting. Though I think the team from 3 has dispersed into other Rockstar studios now.

So glad Rockstar has hung on to Euphoria. Crazy to me that no one else uses it despite one of the most successful companies in gaming consistently using it in blockbusters.

It's good but whatever they did with the writing was bad. Maxpayne2 Was a whole vibe, a feeling. 3 is just another action game with typical Rockstar movie plot blatant ripoffs...

But having said that, Rockstar movie ripoff scripts are generally better than the ones that are just random... So again pretty good, but not great... On par with gta5

Loved it as well. Those cutscenes though, too much and the fact that they were used to mask the cutscenes which made them unskippable for the most part was pretty bad. Great shooting though, probably the best there has been.

I thought they were running drug money? marcelo had a bag of money to deliver to a guy, that's all I remember.

Remaster pls. 1080/60 with the option to skip cutscenes.

Automatic 10/10.
This please. Especially the option to skip cutscenes.

Seriously, I'd consider Max Payne 3 of the best action games of all time if it wasn't for the horrible unskippable cutscenes. Completely killed the game for me (I would have replayed it like 7 times, easy, if not for those fucking cutscenes)

Funny to see this thread since I have just re-installed it today. Trying to get it working again, social club is giving me a real headache saying that my account doesn't exist.

But yeah, I fucking love the game. Hopefully these past couple sales have got the multiplayer more active on PC.

funny u mention that because i consider red dead 3rd... i was debating between GTA 5 and red dead, but i had to go with gta 5 because of the traversal aspect, smoother animations and cover system. i felt way more in control in gta 5 than i did in red dead.

This is my first time ever posting on neogaf. I just wanted to say I enjoyed Max Payne 3. One memorable scene involved this bit of dialog between Max and Passos.
Passos :Sure beats New Jersey ,huh Max?"
Max: In some ways.
Passos: Hey come one, it's awesome!
Max: Well...Everybody's drunk and tanned and listening to house music. Most of them have plastic surgery and they're all doing blow. I guess it is kinda like Jersey huh.
Passos: That is very funny Max.

That part made me laugh. I guess its because I use to live in New jersey and its partially true lol.

I've replayed this at least 10 times. I love it. Yes, the cut scenes are a bitch but the gameplay is so good.

Automatic 10/10.

Beat me to the punch! Plus all of the add-ons so that the multiplayer can thrive without splitting up the community. If they wanted to be extra cool, they'd remove the soft-lock lobby entirely.

Rockstar plz

Nothing quite beats that slide to cover in Red Dead for style.

I haven't played Red Dead in years, but I remembered enjoying it's gunplay, whereas I was disappointed with GTAV and find it fairly unfun. It might be the AI's ridiculous accuracy or the lack of dead-eye.

One of my favorite game is max payne 2, but I really hated MP3. There was no style in the slowmo, you need to change the visuals and sound dramatically when entering slowmo, instead here it was the same as without, and there were enemies that killed me from miles away so I had to take cover all the time. Also the characters were boring and had not much charisma, and the story was forgettable. The dialog, one of the most important aspects of max payne, had none of the witty of the previous entrys.

The technical aspect is superb theres no denying that

Oh good OP you saved me from making a thread about how much Max payne 3 sucks....oh wait i must have stumbled into a gaf where everyone is crazy and forgot the shitty mechanics. Yes the shooting is awesome but so fucking what, that's not enough. My main grievance are these:

- After every cutscene the game unequips your selected gun and swaps it for the pistol, this happens IN EVERY LITTLE CUTSCENE. It got me killed a few times because for some reason having my best weapon at the ready when enemies swarm me after a cutscene is not cinematic enough.

-Max payne 3 removes weapons randomly when i'm playing a level, yes you read that right. After certain parts during a chapter the game leaves me with only my pistol, i don't think i have to explain why this is retarded.

-Max payne 1 and 2 had a combat system that really felt more dynamic and more agile than 3, granted it's been awhile since i played those old games but 3 felt more rigid like a lot. 3 felt like it wanted to pay respect to the gameplay of the old games but also want to be a standard third person shooter with the addition of a cover system and i don't think it worked.

-I already saw the story of Max payne 3 it was better when it was called man on fire.

-Max payne had no character arc, someone please tell what was the point of going to brazil. Max starts a fat drunken loser and ends up a.....fat drunken loser with a brazilian shirt.

Please tell i'm not the only fucking person in the world who noticed these things. Also this series is fucking dead, yeah it did 4 million but that's not good enough by rockstar standards and having been trough a development hell so thanks rockstar, thanks a lot.
