Can't wait till we get a "We truly are just ghosts in a shell" line at an opportune moment to drive the point home, even though the closest any of the incarnations has gotten to that is The Major following her gut/intuition with her classic "My ghost whispered it..." line
Plus, she's only on there because Pacific Rim. If not for GDT, there'd be no Japanese actresses on that list. And we're casting ScarJo. It's sickening.

Did people expect Hollywood to get an Asian lead for this? Not being facetious here either. When I read the title I thought OK, I'd like to see a GitS live action film and of course they'll go after someone like her.

Nope, needs a tall athletic woman. Asian or not doesn't matter. The series has never been about Japan, so it could be set anywhere, and whatever race doesn't matter. Her name doesn't have to be Mokoto either.
The thing is, Mokoto has a very stoic personality, so I don't think this movie can work as a mainstream Hollywood movie. I can't imagine anyone making a good adaptation of this. Akira or Evangelion would be possible, but not this.

Im saying this is how Hollywood does it.
They sit down and say "hey nobody is going to relate to this stuff going on in Japan"
"Lets change it to NY or LA so Americans can invest"
"OK so now we have this whole team of Asian-Americans, that doesn't really work/make sense"
"Alright as the MC Motoko needs the widest appeal, she will be white and needs a name actor"
"Now lets get some African-Americans in there, Chief & Batou can fit the archetype!"
"Togusa will be a young hearthrob who has relationship potential with Motoko!"
"Ok thats all the characters that really matter but it seems weird with all the remaining characters Asian, mix them up a bit more"
And suddenly you have maybe 1 Japanese character left in the movie.

All of that depends on what version this is based on, actually.
ScarJo's going to get this movie to sell and GitS isn't mainstream anymore. I know it's easy to throw this into the pile of whitewashed roles but Maggie Q won't bring people to the theater here like Scarlett, especially after Lucy.

I am only familiar with the original movie and the Stand Alone Complex series.
Actually, to make it work Batou would have to be the lead. Then I think it would be fine, because you could keep Motoko's emotionless personality. Batou needs a bit more humour to his character though, mainly directed at Motoko, so as to keep the audience on his side and justify Motoko's remoteness to us, her almost alien-character. If they make Motoko the lead, the movie is DOA.
Really, the 95 movie has the best base plot for an adaptation.

A GOOD movie will bring people to the theaters. Are people forgetting Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? I doubt many people in the US knew ANY of the actors and it was fucking subtitled yet it was hugely successful despite that.
A well realized GiTS, playing off as being this generations Matrix (where none of the actors were that big really), ignoring the irony, could definitely work

Not that the movie will cover this ground anyway, but SAC is completely about Japanese politics and society.

Everything is manufactured in hollywood. The propopgation of the status quo is on sleazy execs. Minority actors and actresses won't bring an audience because they don't ever get the chance to begin with. having leading roles for even ones that are made for them being taken by white dudes and dudedettes, it's hilarious

It's not something that you couldn't transpose to other countries at all. It's about politics, it just happens to be in Japan, it's in no way core to the story.
