Fighting Games Weekly | Apr 13-19 | This Netkode Is An Injustice

I already explained it but Redbull Kumite having anime openings as entrance is exactly the consequence of this: a guy in his thirties organizing a tournament for Redbull sees anime songs in his repertoire as the thing to use without giving it a second though. :|

how dare you besmirch the good name of tough boy
and xian coming into the evangelion theme song

and probably other hilarious ones i forgot

I want to play MKX but unless they fix the netcode I'm gonna pass. Buttcheeks netcode was pretty much the only reason I didn't play much MK9.

It's sad that this determines whether or not I'll play a game. MKX is so damned good, but the netcode is so damned bad. I even liked both MK9 and Injustice, but dropped them quickly for the same exact reason. I don't even ask for much, just something that's good between two good connections. If I see a low ping or green bars, then I expect the match to feel good with no discernible delay. It'd suck if that's the only way to get a good game, but at least it would be possible!

It's funny to you since you're not used to it but I've been eating this shit for 10 years. That was funny at Stunfest when we were in an basement but during Redbull Kumite that sounded weeabo as fuck.
I just can't get past every character's animations looking the exact same to me in MK games. If it weren't for special moves I'd have no idea which character was which.
I don't think it's emphasized in their design I guess. Open/Close stance switching exists in the game and that by itself changes how an attack looks. It's a minor thing, but it shows they aren't trying to preserve distinct character silhouettes...compared to street fighter where Vega's claw switches hands, because they want his attacks to look consistent regardless if he's on the left or right.

I think they've gotten better about giving some of the attacks some personality. Something universal in MK like the sweeps, all the characters would perform in pretty much in the exact same fashion. But with MKX, everyone has their own spin on it. Jax kicks you in the shin, Kitana falls on her back and trips you, etc.

Wow some french players are accusing me of corruption because I gave MKX a 8/10 and GGXrd a 7/10.

Well, the evidence is clear Kappa

That said, I do find those ratings hard to believe when one is a really good product with a lot of polish on the small things (the ones that matter to me anyway) while the other pretty much just flies to the bin on looks :p

That said, links to the reviews so I can try to read them and fail at it?

Let's all argue about which of these fighting games with mostly-the-same characters has characters that are more alike. Then go back to Street Fighter.

Speaking of this, I really like how they depict Ryu's, Evil Ryu's and Akuma's personality through their attacks. Even if the data is mostly the same, the look of Ryu's straight-man punches and Akuma's / Evil Ryu's open palm strikes and some of the other stuff does a wonderful job in giving them their own vibe.

The weird mix of classy oldtimey look, the cage and the anime music managed to work for me for some reason. The Omega shitfest should've stayed in someone's arsehole instead of being excreted on stage though.

I have rock-bottom expectations, yet this still manages to surprise me.

What version of MKX has this terrible netcode?

I've played a TON of matches on the PS4 since day 1. The only shitty match I recall is 1 Ermac player who was straight up dial up city.

Based off of my experience I would totally recommend it.

This reminds me of the Gamestop SF4 National tournament. Don't remember if it was 2/3 or single game, but I remember it being single elimination and many places forced players to play on pad even if they brought their own stick. I remember Jwong saying how he forced himself to only play on pad for a while because the qualifier where he was he wasn't allowed to use stick. I think I even remember how some people couldn't play their character because the set up Gamestop used didn't have those characters unlocked.

But that was 2009, I would say this is far worse considering the netcode is still an issue and I thought we were beyond these cruel and crazy SBO style tournaments. Yeah their is over 600 players, but man the format lends itself so much to randomness. If I had one really good gimmick, I could see myself going pretty far in that tournament just because people won't be able to adapt in time. I probably could have made it really far in that Gamestop SF4 tournaments if I knew about DP, FADC, SPD with Seth back in the day lol.

MK netcode ranges from tolerable to awful. Even in a good connection game with my friend down the street, it still feels like you're playing underwater, especially when attempting to do combos.

The only way I would imagine you not noticing is if you never play the game offline, not even training room.

All the japanese comments for the music were mostly filled with laughter and they were confused why that music was used. They thought Dieminion had the coolest entrance.

The Fuudo one was hilarious. It fit him so well and then he did that little run to the stage.

great tournament, great experience

I'm surprised they're doing a ft1, but isn't this a pre season cup? In Halo ESL is also doing their online cups and lan tournaments that lead up to a season championship. A regular series in Halo is a ft3, but for the ESL online tournaments they are a ft2. That's why I'm surprised the MKX tournaments aren't a ft2 considering Halo matches take about 10-15 minutes. The only explanation is that the regular tournaments are a ft2 and the online tournaments will always be shorter than the offline tournaments.

I agree with this. I have google fiber and netcode feels like ass. After playing a ton of local play the past 2 days I just can't play this online, the delay is just awful.

That's correct. It's pre season so it's FT1. It will change later.

All fighting game is as complete as MKX. Except for the Netcode it pretty much everything you need in a fighting game and more. For single player it is the best fighting game ever. Capcom has a lot of work to do for SFV. Bring back world tour mode.

Re: On Bum and Sp00ky.

I know they have past issues, but they're obviously past it since they're commentating together at Final Smash Attack next week on Sp00ky's stream.

Also for Final Smash Attack, its a 16 Smash 4 invitationals with half the matches played on Sp00ky's stream, and the other half on Arturo's NYCFurby's stream.

Why aren't they playing the fun smash brothers instead?

NRS is on another level when it comes to how much content they actually put in their fighting games. We can only hope they actually work to improve the online experience. This game deserves better.
