Can I say something about rival schools.

On one hand, i hope rival schools happens. I would like to see different fighting games out of capcom, and it would be nice for people would like to see that series continue get something.

On the other hand, I feel as though if they make it, they to completely abandon the design philosophies aesthetically they had before, like throw away. They need to acknowledge high school anime and anime in general existed past the 80's, update and move on. This one of those games where i'm like " they should modernize" I always felt like those designs were dated as hell when they came out, and I have experienced a lot of highschool japanese media since then, like persona, with good uniform designs. And I know what I am asking is for them to completely disregard the people begging for that game, and redesign the characters and make it something new, but I think benifit franchise. I think if some series needs more modern sensibilities in how its characters are designs, its rival schools. Because people were talking about " standing on its own merits " when referring to whether it should exist in the sf universe , it tried to it didn't work and didn't exist for 15 years. All i'm saying is maybe we should take some chances with this fighting game.

If there is a new Rival Schools I think it will play quite a bit differently than before.

Itsuno (the director for Power Stone, CVS2, DMC3, DMC4, Dragon's Dogma etc.) has been wanting to make another fighting game for a long time now and his intention seems to be to redefine the genre like SF2 did. And he has basically been saying publicly that he wants to make another Rival Schools since about 2013.

In terms of it's aesthetic style and setting Rival Schools is just plain lucky since that is exactly the kind of thing the Japanese audience is into these days.

I don't think the old rival schools is reflective of current popular highschool anime in terms of aesthetic, i'm not a " Japanese expert " by any means, I just know what I see. Like 1980's and 70's sure. Today no, for a variety of reasons. Just because it has school girls in it, doesn't mean it fits the bill .

Difference is that the older games were made with export in mind, hence why you see they have not added too many anime tropes beyond what was on TV at that time, so as not to estrange Western viewers. Hence that particular design and aesthetic. Star Gladiator and Tech Romancer did the same.
Rival Schools 3 will take this into account as well.

I can understand that, nowadays though things like persona and crap ton of stuff SE puts out, game wise and anime wise. And a crap ton of anime gets over to the west, so there are more tropes to draw from. Also I find this funny the two examples you used, and the game in question were dead. Maybe what they did wasn't the best thing.

And if they want to push the rival schools angle, and really want to push it for the west, rival schools as a concept in the game could be global. Then if you want to go tropey as shit, you could just high school trope out of a bunch of different highschools, like teen aged street fighter.

What? Tech Romancer/Kikaioh is pure references and in-jokes. They couldn't cram in more tropes because they already tried as hard as they could. If that didn't throw off the foreign audience then I can't imagine that was intentional.

Who's the original character designer for the rival schools games?

I see someone has shined my Birdman Signal
The primary artist is Edayan who would later go on to do art for the Phoenix Wright/AA series
http://capcom.wikia.com/wiki/Edayan

Also time to dig up some Rival Schools artwork I posted many years ago!
I'm gonna do what my homie Rexxx knows I do best: POST AWESOME ARTWORK!

it was indeed but if you look at the character design, it was more familiar to Western viewers, eg Mazinger Z references.
