Lighting is too realistic for it's own good. .

Is this the game that was revealed behind closed doors and everyone was super hyped for? I'm pretty confused as this looks like an average shooter and nothing special besides the graphics.

The official trailer looked - sorry - borderline DukeNukem Forever.

It looked bland. And I was there when the first Doom hit the bbs:s, but this isn't anything like the OG Doom. Maybe a good thing, maybe bad. Time will tell

It's really boring. There is just nothing distinct to speak of. The levels look like a video card tech demo and the shooting seems, well... effective enough, but it's just shooting monsters that make rawr sounds and attack you will their claws. There is just nothing memorable about it at all, from what they've shown.

It definitely seems like a game that has had a troubled development / struggled for identity from the look of it.

An average shooter?

That implies that there are a wealth of other shooters on the market that focus on this type of gameplay.

Whether or not you like what you're seeing, there ARE NOT a lot of shooters like this left. They are not being released en masse.

Personally being a massive Doom fan since the original I'm liking the look of this, it's kinda giving me an Unreal vibe also which is good thing imo, I am worried about the gameplay maybe being a bit dated for the masses but I'm personally intrigued.

I am having a hard time parsing the idea that this game looks generic, DNF-like, has the wrong graphical orientation, etc...

Surely everyone knows that each id game has meant great leap forwards in terms of realism? (except for RAGE which is an outlier). Also, what looks average about this? Other than indie low budget shooters, what does this have in common with anything AAA out there?

Well that was... boring looking. I know having a just run and gun like Doom and Doom 2 isn't the most... modern form of gameplay, but can we go back to that?

This Doom lacks the speed, action and character of the original games and opting for the a mix of a tamer version of the originals with Doom 3's broodiness. I can't say I am that impressed. They have borrowed some thing from the Brutal Doom mod but it has soooooooooo much less power and visceral feeling to it.

Looks like people are just tired of playing fps games.
Not me.

Again, there aren't many games like this being made any more apart from budget indie titles.

Most single player shooters today either lean heavy into RPG mechanics are are CoD-like scripted fests.

Other than the melee finishers, what wasn't run and gun about this? I agree the fireballs could be a bit slower to emphasize the SHMUP-like gameplay of the first game (at times), most of that demo was some dude running and firing guns that did not even need reloading.

I didn't feel that same energy I felt from dooms before. Maybe it's just the way the guy was playing, but it felt a bit slow paced.

A big deal is that it was super obviously done with a controller.

Then again, this is e3 which is only about consoles... :(

Doom 4's Snap Map is gonna be huge for consoles, games need more map editors! make some stuff in the same spirit of the olden .Wad days except its anyone.

This seriously looks awesome

It obviously isn't carrying over everything from the original (level design was never going to happen guys.....) but it looks like a fun shooter that celebrates the legacy of Doom.

Any slowness in the single player demo looks to be a result of the demoer doing the typical scenic route BS from all E3 presentations. It could then be argued that "they should know not to do that for Doom" which is a fair point, but I'd imagine Bethesda themselves had plenty of input on what they wanted shown. I'm led to believe it's way faster with running and such by the multiplayer clips and the fact that even in the single player the climbing move was super fast, much faster than his walking speed

Looks like that map (the first one) is just a tutorial level or a vertical slice showing some of the cool tribute-ish stuff to try and show off the systems and style as much as possible. The AI did look dumb but they obviously had invincibility on. I think the HUD was fake too, at least in the first clip, because if I'm not mistaken the health bar was at 65 the whole time. Sure it said "low health" a couple of times but nahhhh

DOOM looks really really fun and despite being fairly linear with kill rooms, the kill rooms themselves look fairly sprawling with a good amount of verticality. I'd also imagine that the real game (without invincibility) will be significantly harder and higher difficulties may even remix enemies.

Multiplayer looks super awesome and the demon power up is an awesome addition

Music (besides the E1M1 remix in the trailer) was definitely disappointing, fairly weak sounding but that's what Spotify on PS4 is for. Prolly gonna just blast Aborted while killing everything in the face

I had to laugh because when I was watching the demo I was like "really guys? I thought the Quakecon demo was supposed to be the most violent video game demo ever" and then he picked up the chainsaw and I was like ".....alright, I could see that"

Uhm. Did you play DNF?
The gameplay demos have zero in common with that game ;)

Looks like people are just tired of playing fps games.

I don't know, I still love a good FPS but this one just has nothing interesting. For example, here are some things I might find "interesting":

-Witty or fun dialogue / monologue
-Crazy ass weapons
-Crazy ass numbers of enemies
-Huge / legitimately menacing enemies
-Environmental destruction / next-gen debris
-Super fast 1990s era game speed
-Colorful / fresh / nostalgic level design
-Intricate, labyrinthine level design

I could go on but that's the general idea. Even featuring one or two of these things (obviously you wouldn't want to have all of them in one game) would go a long way to setting this game apart.

For instance - Wolfenstein: great writing, great characters, unique 60s futurist art direction, ability to dual wield all guns.

That's all it needed to be very unique and enjoyable. Doom has nothing like that, from what I can see.

I thought it looked slow when I was watching it, but after thinking on it for a while I think it's fine.

I didn't play the original Doom crazy fast like I do now when I first played it. I did a lot of exploring and looking for secrets. Hopefully secrets with ammo caches and soul spheres are still very much a thing in nuDOOM.
<-I will never do that again, I'm sorry

I really, really hope I can skip the weapon wheel in the PC version

Teaser showed off the revenant implying that it would be a return to D1 D2 formula in modern graphics. That'd be amazing.

This shows off a dude-bro shooter with nods to classic doom elements.

Sorely disappointed.

Looks too generic.
I don't think that word means what you think it means.

Anyway, damn. The player was obviously moving slower for the purposes of demoing the game, with a few idiotic "lets slow pan around this corner for a look at the environment" in case anyone was wondering. But man, I'm loving everything about this... save for the chainsaw. Took too much control away from the player. And Snapmap looks cool as fuck. Timesplitters level editor, with a dash of Forge? Sold.

Wow, the opinion on this trailer is extremely polarized, even for GAF standards, no?

After this, I've accepted that the original Doom 1&2 aesthetics and otherworldly feel is something that just can't be translated to 3D polygons.

If they just tweak some sound effects (I'm looking at you plasma rifle) and the color palette, it should be a decent game on its own merit.

Looking forward to the inevitable user-built "megawads" of the classic Doom1&2 and Final Doom campaigns using SnapMap!

Playing this with a controller and playing it slow to take in the scenery was probably not the best way to showcase this game.

I was originally looking forward to this game, but it's aesthetically really ugly and bland for my tastes. Seems like it just screams at you hoping to get your heart rate up.

Camera motion looks stylistically like shit with a mouse. It's one reason a lot of demos and players prefer controller.

on the other hand, blasting trough it making it difficult for the audience to follow the action would have been a bad way as well. anyway, MP looked very fast and quake like so at least MP is going to be awesome.

I'll bite.

What on earth looked dude bro about it? Do you have any concept of what dude bro even means?

I will never understand why people are never, ever happy.

I want me some more arena deathmatch. As usual, I will respect the fact that I haven't touched it and refrain from wild statements about bland gameplay or it appearing like *insert failed FPS franchise revival here*.

GAF is so polarized over this, lol

I wonder what the hell kind of game of other wordly, ethereal, god-like origins and epic, biblical proportions needs to be made to impress some of you. This is classic Doom, with a few modern tweaks. This is as old school as you will get in 2015/2016. I don't know about y'all, but I lost my damn mind many times during that demo. This was the perfect way to start a conference.

Being a big Gears fan, I can say those chainsaw kills and that gore are fucking GNARLLLLLLY. The Coalition better take notes.
