When I hear aliens I think of martians but I'm assuming that's not the case here.

Drakengard 3 spoilers below:

More like entities that come from whatever created the
flower? I still have to beat the final boss so I don't know what's shown after that.

One of my gripes with Yoko Taro's work is the reliance on outside material for exposition that should have been in the games in one form or another. Do I really need to read a manga about the Utahime Five to understand who the hell the guy with the X on his forehead was that gets killed in the beginning of Drakengard 3?
Though some of the stuff was cool, like the Children's Crusade, Wall of Jericho, and the audio CDs. Some of the stuff gets unusual, like the audio entry on one of the audio drama CDs where Kaine has sex with the corpse of a young boy.

Nier is the game that will make you permanently distrust reviews.

For me it was Godhand.

By the way, for first time players, here's how you handle side quests for Nier.

niersidequestchart.png

Basically, if you don't want to do them for story purposes, don't. The game is incredibly easy. You don't have to do any of them. It's not like Xenoblade. So many reviewers ripped on the game for the side quests. They should be considered bonus material.

Oh, if you do care about sidequests there are a few you can miss, including one that is cryptic bullshit. So look up spoiler free on those?

gamespot article w/ new details, including 3 playable characters

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-nier-will-stay-weird-but-this-time-with-platin/1100-6428262/

"For this new Nier, we kept an action RPG mindset and thought, this time we want to hit out a great, high-level JRPG, so we're going to stick to one character design," Saito added.

"Platinum is great at creating action games, and we've asked them to make things a little more simplified, slightly. At first I thought it was going to be a battle-heavy action game, but luckily for us, a lot of Platinum Games' staff members really respect Nier and took it to heart, and understand the project.

"We're really fortunate in that they essentially took the battle system and the game design of the original Nier and added Platinum Games-type elements on top of it to make this hybrid if you will. It's not like it's a completely new game, they really have respect for the previous game."
"Drakengard was my first game as director, and we were actually told a lot by our advisory board to do retakes and make changes and honestly, I said, screw this, I'm not making another one," Taro said.

"I thought, with Nier, I'm going to make a normal game. That's what I tried to make, a normal game, though people think it's very dark and somber. But for me, that's normal."

He added: "The way I look at original Nier is like your mom's home cooking: it may not be the best, but it's okay, you're comfortable with it. Members of the media told me the original Nier is like a puppy someone threw out. It's cute in a way, but there's something wrong in a sense, and you can't help but love it even though there's something missing and you can't put your finger on it.

"But now we're working with Platinum games, and with Yoshida and Okabe, and we feel we have these great ingredients now. Is it going to be too perfect? We have all these great chefs, if you will, working together, and now, is it going to be missing that thing that made it so endearing to our fans? But after thinking about it, we think, we're just going to try it and see how it goes."

Action RPG mindset, praises be. I always wanted Platinum to work on an action RPG.

Lol at these:

"Please play on PlayStation 4," he said in response to a question about what Xbox players can expect.

"We are going to maintain that multiple playthrough idea for the new project, but in terms of the save file deletion thing, we probably won't do it, since we did it in the original one and want to do new things," Taro explained. "But we will have multiple playthroughs involved. But you know... we're still in early phases of development. Maybe we will delete you save files."

Also, so much for that A rating:

The new Nier will, however, retain the tone of the original game and the Drakengard series. It will keep its mature subject matter and approach to dialogue and presentation, not shying away from hyper-violence and sexualization.

Still hope Sony will release the game digitally because there's no way I can play the original otherwise. :( (Unless Sony follows MS's lead and makes the PS4 backwards compatible)

Thankfully at least they have plenty of time to do so before this sequel hits.

Don't worry, the only thing that awaits you past that part in Drakengard 3 is heartbreak and rage

Mainly rage

Actually, you should just youtube it because the rage will consume you. (Further spoiler below for Drakengard 3)

HAHA YOU THINK THE LEVEL IS OVER BUT NOPE FUCK YOU PLAYER I'M YOKO TARO I DO WHAT I WANT FUCK YOU YOU GOTTA DO THE WHOLE BOSS OVER!!

One of the things I liked about Nier was that it wasn't sure what it wanted to be AND IT KNEW THAT and was okay with that! I mean, it was equal parts action game, action-RPG, platformer,
isometric homage, survival horror, bullet hell shooter...

I hope they try to stay true to that philosophy.

Nier 2 |OT| "Maybe we will delete your save files."

Not only for our game, but for all Square-Enix games! (Except Lightning Returns, because no one can erase that game)

THIS!

I ALWAYS wanted an action RPG from Platinum. Super excited for this.

P.S: Reading those spoilers, what the hell is Nier about? haha. It has to be one of the weirdest stories ever.

P.P.S: Any chance of a remaster of the first one? I didn't play it :( Are there any sources that explain the story and the lore?

I wouldn't hold your breath for a remaster, but they're making a sequel to Nier, so anything is possible.

And I implore you not to spoil yourself. If you have a 360 or a PS3, just play it. Nier is such a unique and wonderful game. It begs to be experienced firsthand.

Looks cool, but I don't really like the outfit for the character in the trailer. I have no idea about this game so I'm speaking pretty ignorantly, but playing as a girl in a poofy skirt and an outfit that looks like it's from the early 1900s just isn't badass even if the game is great. Give her a combat outfit or something.

this song is massively underrated imo. though i think the hammering iron and percussion actually detract from the song (though they add a lot to the thematic feel of it)
the synth part of it is so nice, seriously

(yes this playlist has all the layered parts of the tracks, the game splits them up into percussion, vocals, strings and synth usually since stuff fades in/out based on the situation and whatnot. the individual layers by themselves are so nice, even- see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hisFv1adRJo or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2fPoVGxCTg)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is the 360 version the one to go for with the first Nier? I have both consoles, but I know multiplat games of that era were often pretty rough on PS3, and it seems like 360 copies are about half the price on Ebay anyway.

I've always heard good things about Nier, but now that Platinum's doing the sequel it's shot to the top of my must-play list.

You should probably start with the first one.

People who are not used to Yoko Taro's brand will probably get blindsided though.

He's one of the most underrated visionaries in the gaming industry IMO. Its what i've thought since Drakengard 1 ending D...MY GOD.

Just hearing the phrase "THANKS FOR PLAYING!" makes me want to have a mental breakdown

They are both about the same in terms of performance, but i went for 360 because on PS3 it demands a decent install, whereas 360 doesn't.

I know its not coming out for a long time, but this game has me sooooo hyped.

Maybe I'll have finished Fallout by the time it comes out

Your flow chart could be equally valid for Xenoblade...

Both versions of the game play exactly the same so go for whatever you prefer or whatever is cheaper.

That was completely unexpected.

Even more than FF7R and Shenmue 3. One of the biggest announcements out of this E3.

And makes this E3 even bigger. Seriously, we are never going to see an E3 as good as this one.
PS4 is a f**king beast

Holy fucking shit, out of fucking nowhere!! We just need Emi Evans again and the dream team will be complete. Honestly, if the soundtrack manages to match the original, or even surpass the original, I don't know what I'd do...

It's the opposite for me. I love that way of expanding the universe. Reading Grimoire NieR after getting 100% in the game was so awesome! Same with the book you got with Drakengard 3 CE.

I am so hyped for this new NieR game. Platinum handling the gameplay can be awesome!

This didn't really set in for me during the conference yesterday... I'm suddenly very hyped!

I didn't finish Nier but I had a love affair with it. One of the best soundtracks of last generation... And had two awesome concept albums too. I listened to those to death in the early 2010s.

And that PlatinumGames comnection. Can't go wrong. I love how the "platinum should do every game" meme turned into the reality of the show, haha.

Yeah I think this announcement more than any others (including Shenmue 3, FF7R, etc.) got me the most excited at this year's E3.

Aw man, Emil's theme with just the vocals is so good: https://youtu.be/T8aNJvS58eg

Emi Evans for sequel pls

So, I know I've said it before, and other people too, but...

Say Taro delivers on the story front, and we have the same level of art/soundtrack as the first game (these are all things that can happen), and then Platinum delivers their A-game for this (also not hard)... What would be the game's flaws? Sidequests maybe?

Like, could we actually see a game that excels at everything?

I don't know, I just can't wrap my head around this.

Every time I got stuck in Xenoblade, someone would tell me "Well, you're under leveled, are you doing any sidequests?" :)

Here's a better advice: Well, you're under leveled, go explore the entire map.
Also XB is not that hard of a game to play when underleveled =X

To be honest, I like more the serious but toned down Taro from Nier 1 than the crazy Taro from Drakengard 1 and the short stories from Grimoire Nier/ Drama CD.
Wonder what Taro we will have in Nier 2 lol

We never saw it coming.

I need to play some Platinum games to know what to expect. I've only played Bayonetta 1 & 2.

It just hit me in the last few hours again. Like WTF....a Nier sequel with Platinum Games handling the development? This is crazy. Platinum's action prowess backed by a Keiichi Okabe soundtrack, and Taro Yoko overseeing it making sure it all stays weird, and dark, and emotional.

How did this week even happen.

This E3 is friggin bonkers, no one ever saw this coming.

The story and music will most assuredly be god-tier, and we don't have to worry about the combat part since PG is handling it. Just wow.

So far this is probably my biggest get from e3 along with FO4. Back when I was but a lowly lurker, gaf told me to check this out and so I did. Hearing those tracks again immediately takes me back to how I was feeling when I first played it. The lady in the lighthouse side quest really stuck with me. I just finished The Witcher 3 and might dust off my 360 to play this again. Nier 2 is going to be absolutely nuts what with that team behind it.
