Fighting Games Weekly | June 22-28 | Ryu's in Smash 4, Jigglypuff's in SF5

The Lost Age? TLA was amazing. Had one dungeon that felt like it was too long/annoying for its own good, but otherwise it was just great. You get to explore a much larger part of Gondowan than in vanilla GS. The DS iteration I know next to nothing about.
I wish the game had more time in the oven, it was clear they had to cut a lot of the western hemisphere based on how empty it is comparatively. Game holds a special place in my heart even though I don't think I could replay it today.

I liked Persona 3, but hated the Sickness thing. Let me stay in dungeons for as long as I want without having to worry about lowered stats. Persona 4 fixed things, thankfully, and is my Game of the Generation.

i agree
I am waiting on a P3 remake or complete port at this point. Both versions are missing something.

Devil Survivor is such a beast. I am in the long game on that. I beat a chapter, play for a while in the next until I get my ass kicked, then take a break for months.

I love it though. No mercy in that game.

Count me in the P3/P4 fan group. I thought P1 was okay, but I was waaaaay too underleveled for the final boss and have never gone back to finish it.

Catherine is amazing. SMTIV was fun.

Soul Hackers sitting on my 3DS and P2 on my Vita, both just waiting for me to have time.

Persona Q was *fantastic*
I haven't played DSurv 2. Not sure how it relates to 1, actually.

What made PQ so good?

Catherine is a GOAT game. So much fun. I need to do my second play through.

I won't do a second play of DS1 because my save got erased. :(

That's because of the skill whisper system. You get the most useful thing, and there's no reason to carry them anymore. I don't know if ill ever play Devil survivor. It's not my type of game, and I have Strange Journey to play through.
I think it is more that...in SMT and DS, the demons are your characters. It sucks to sacrifice them and stare at an uggo demon instead. Or lose a good Res set. In P4, the demons are more like "modes" you shift between, so it feels like upgrades to your character. Less personal.

I like Baulder's Gate, X-Com UFO defense and Neverwinter Nights.
My computer couldn't ever handle BG. :(

I liked the art, though. Had a crush on the Drow chick.

Mind Read = crack.

What games?
Too many to name, IMO. I just don't think the Golden Sun games were that great. 8-bit levels of characterization, random battles, your characters feel weird and incomplete until you get all Djinn, some of the Djinn are STUPID hard to get, and the combat amounts to watching summoning animations most of the time. They aren't bad games, but kind of middling. That the first one was so short left a sour taste in my mouth. Still at the start of the second one. :/

Even objectively bad games like Black Sigil are better.

FFVII is GOAT

can I get an amen
Grateful it is getting a remake, but Chrono Trigger doesnt even need a remake.

Persona Q was great because the levels absolutely decimate anything in the Persona series proper. Which is to be expected, of course.
But that combined with the fanservice and cuteness is wonderful.

What made PQ so good?

Well, if you don't like 3/4, you won't have much attraction to it. It was my first Etrian Odyssey style dungeon crawler and I discovered that I love that. Plus it had the Persona 3/4 characters and using demons to mode switch. :)

Once I get done with my current in-play list (Fire Emblem if, DS1, Lost Heroes 2, SRW Z3-2) I'm going to try out Etrian Odyssey 4 to get more of that dungeon crawling.

Phantasy Star is the greatest RPG series, btw. I'm talking the master system/genesis games here. Though PSO on the Dreamcast was legit, too.

RPGs are still a realm I'm only in the kiddie pool for. Can I win FGW points by saying my favorite is a tie between Chrono Trigger, TWEWY and The Thousand Year Door? :p

AWWW SHIT RPG TALK?? I just started Persona Q, and I've been playing Devil Summoner 2 here and there on the side (in Chapter 5 right now). I played a little bit of Persona 1 and 2 back in the day, I really like the style and everything but I also remember being confused by a lot of the systems and negotiation being a pain in the ass. I'm still going to get around to playing the PSP versions of 1 and 2:IS, but I'm worried they haven't aged well at all and I'll feel compelled to use a guide to get through chunks of them :/

Just want to also voice the complaint that the map in SMT4 is amazingly bad. Maybe the worst world map of all time? It's holy shit bad.

Edit: If we're doing top lists my top 4 is FF6, FFT, Chrono Trigger and Suikoden 2. I don't even bother trying to pick one over the others, can't do it. Would probably be FF6 if it came down to it.

I played through Nier for the first time this week. A flawed but very enjoyable game, especially the second play through.

On the topic of fighting games though, I'm glad things are looking so much better for PC after this past month. I already enjoyed things like Melty(which seems more active than uniel these day), SG, and fightcade, so KI, SFV, and DOA5 are icing on the cake.

Oh and I finally tried out the Xrd option select and learned it with Ino's reversal super in seconds; very dumb.

Melty has a very small but very dedicated player base at this point. That and the new netcode hack for it is absurdly good (and shoutouts to the netcode hack having better controller options than 99% of PC games), so the game is much better online than UNIEL is. I would also say that it's the better game in general.

As with all of the PC versions of fighting games coming around, it took long enough but better late than never.

No love for non-J RPGs?

Baldur's Gate II is the greatest WRPG of all time. Ever.

Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect 1, and Dragon Age: Origins were all enjoyable games. Bioware no longer makes games that I really enjoy. I wanted to like DA:I but meh.

I like Oblivion and Skyrim - never the main quest, just exploring + Dark Brotherhood.

I have Project Eternity but no time for it.

I like the Legend of Zelda
Wait, what?

I prefer them over jrpgs these days. I beat divinity original sin like a month ago.
Yes! Online Co-op is goofy but fun.

Can't remember the last one I played that was any good. The west sucks at RPGs tbh
Words hurt Beef.

Oh man I forgot about KoTOR and Fallout Series. Love them. Can I get an Amen Mini?
