It's been a long time since I listened to anything with Snoop Dogg, but I am having a hard time believing that's him. Sounds completely different.

Damn there are some nice tracks on this album. So sick to see people like Ice and Xzibit back too.

Loose Cannons
Issues
One Shot One Kill

Top 3 so far. Going to play this album so many times this weekend, tonne of house work to do!

Way too much singing, way too much effects on the voices, overall feels too 'busy'.

However, Animals, One Shot One Kill, Just Another Day I enjoyed a fair bit. Genocide and the Xzibit track were good too.

Nice to see a Turkish psych sample in there

Listened to the album on the way to work. It defines overproduced. Guitar twangs over deep bass while backup vocals loop and a woman sings in a robot voice is just noise. Dre is at his best with simple beats and minimal instrumentals to relay hooks between skillfully written offensive lyrics. Compton fails at achieving this most basic of expectations.

The only track I heard headed in a good direction was Just Another Day, but before I thought I heard a sick hook coming - Asia Bryant started singing before the track abruptly ended at 2:21.

The only track I'm really not feeling is Talking To My Diary. Other than that...it's still a 9/10 in my book.

Listening to a couple tracks - Snoop surprised me on One Shot One Kill, Em's flow was surprisingly fine on his track...until the end where it went choppy as usual.

Will give it a proper listen later on.

Overproduced is right. Did not enjoy this at all on two full listenings. None of it grew on me the second time, but I'll try it again later. I love The Chronic, but this is so weak.

I was hoping this album would somewhat reflect the sounds of the original but it's nothing like it. The album is just whatevers but maybe it will grow on me.

The Game's track is dope, the last track too. I like it overall, but ya know, it could have been better.

On the last track I really wish he would have just looped the initial 2 bars of the beat the entire song. He changes it for every 3rd and 4th bar and it is just worse than the 1st and 2nd. Slight annoyance. haha

Didn't figure it was new thread worthy but since we are praising the West Coast in here Warren G also dropped Regulate G Funk Era Pt. II EP today. It's on Apple music and I'm sure other services.

Seems way too overproduced to me, I wonder how much influence Kendrick had over it. Also I can only hear about Dre rapping about how he's rich so many times, it's different to say that when you're 25 compared to 50

I really gotta question you if you really think this album is "overproduced". Are you a fan of Hip-Hop, just listen to the genre occasionally, a fan of old school only?

In an age when were being drowned in simplistic boring trap beats and basic asf production I'm glad this is "overproduced" the mixture of classic dre and modern influences is put together so well.

Aren't you the member that asked GAF why they like MF DOOM? This album is straight garbage, the only songs that are good are the ones Dre produced by himself because it's not... you know, robotic trash

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compton_(album) he produced four songs on this album, and its pretty obvious which ones those are when listening to it

How the fuck did people hear the second song (the one after the intro) and go "oh yeah! Dre is back!"

Over produced. Over produced. Over produced.

What made Dre's sound so dope was his ability to make the most out of simple instrumentation. This album sounds like he was compensating for something. I don't hate the album but this will likely only get a few spins until I'm done with it.

Just got it and not feeling it at all. I will definitely give it a proper play through and see if I warm up to it. It's way too busy and trying to appeal to a younger audience.

It just doesn't have that westcoast oomf that both chronics had. This could be another aftermath.

I'll hold my final verdict until after this weekend.

This is my general feeling so far, too. Sounds more like a Kendrick album than a Dre album, which isn't a bad thing, just not what I expected at all.

Still going to give it more time, though. I can see it growing on me.

Yeah, I was hoping for an old school / throwback vibe but it just sounds pretty much like all the other current garbage out there now. Meh.

This is where I'm at after my first listen. I don't hate it, but it's not great.

Yup. I'm surprised for an album that is suppose to compliment a movie about NWA and is called Compton by such a legendary artists as Dr. Dre, that he would seemingly conform to a sound that is not really his lane.

Think about the words I put in bold then listen to this album. It doesn't mesh.

I think the album is totally solid. If I had to give it a grade, it would be 7/10. The best choice Dre did was announce the album and release it as soon as possible, that way the hype was at the absolute minimal. What's good is fucking good, and what's bad is, well, the new-age fear of what Detox would be if it existed. If this is the last thing Dre ever makes (album wise), then I'm more than happy. I think it's a solid bookend.

Hearing Xzibit on that beat is nothing less than benevolent and nostalgic.

Like I said in GAFHop thread, this album (unlike it's predecessors which were revolutionary, ahead of their time, and defined the WC sound of their respective eras) really embraced and built upon the sound of its contemporaries instead of trying to replace it.

Like someone above said, sonically it's close to what coming out of the TDE camp right now.

And I don't think that's a bad thing, especially when its executed as well as it was on this CD. But obviously you have people who were looking for something a bit more...vintage Dre.

I think that's the catch-22 when you're following up on a legacy of highly acclaimed albums, especially when there's such a time gap between albums.

Had he come out with 2001 Pt.2, you would now have people calling the record dusty and dated, saying that "the game had passed him by" or that "Dre couldn't adapt to 2015 and is stuck in the past".

Sounds like a Kendrick album. What a waste.

See I disagree with this. There was a significant gap between his first two albums and he was still able to deliver a sound that was true to the West Coast/Dr Dre sound while still presenting a new modern aesthetic (for the time). The glowing reviews from most fans was proof of this.

This album, which granted has an even longer gap, again delivers a modern aesthetic but unfortunately in the process seems to abandon much of what we expect from West Coast/Dr Dre. I think that that is were most of the criticism is rooted. We probably all expected this album to adopt a certain measure of modern hip-hop but not to the extent that what you basically have is a very contemporary hip-pop album.

This album is literally called Compton: A Soundtrack. It's a pop album made to promote the movie. Looking at the credits on Wiki, Dre seemingly produced only four songs out of the 16. There is no way in hell Dre had any real input on producing stuff like the second song (after the intro). The only way you can convince me otherwise is showing me a video of them in the studio/wherever and he's actually co-producing that beat (and the rest of the crappy ones). The amount of hooks on this album is more than enough to tell you what kind of album this is. Yeah, this is his "grand finale"

Not sure anyone wants to convince you of anything

i wanted to love this but i feel like its overproduced - i dig interesting instrumentation as much as the next guy but the sound on some of these tracks is all over the place. It feels incoherent to me but maybe i'm just not next level enough

Anyone giving veredicts based on one listen while wearing shitty stock headphones deserves to be slapped. Shut up and listen to it, from beginning to end, two or three more times. If your opinion remains the same, aight, if it doesn't, look back at how foolish you are.

Nah, it's a busy-ass album. Way too many moving parts. Too many vocal and instrumental arrangements for it's own good. Detracts from the content for someone like me who really wants to listen, not just hear it.

I used Sony Gold and the album almost gave me a headache.
