Love the werewolf and the amazing/horrifying transformation in AWIL. Along with classic Wolfman it's my favorite.

Wolfman in Monster Squad was a favorite as a kid:

Nah, not really. Fun movie though.

I actually like the Underworld Werewolves. They got shat on most of the time, but I found them to be pretty cool. Of course, American Werewolf in London is up there as well.

man this thread - love it and yet it really points out how many bad ones there are. why is it so hard to design a good werewolf you think?

dont forget thriller...

AWiL is my fave. Dog Soldiers is great too.

There's a werewolf scene in Waxwork that's really great. Fun movie too.

American Werewolf in London - GOAT transformation scene 35 years later
The Howling - 2nd GOAT transformation scene
Ginger Snaps

And
Trick r' Treat
- It was done in such a clever way, though it was pretty obvious once you think about it.

This just shows how talented Rick Baker is. His work almost 40 years later is still cited as some of the best. Age and dated designs be damned. His transformation sequence was ground breaking.

Love The Company of Wolves. Not sure how well it's known in the US, but it's well worth checking out:

Also fond of Silver Bullet.

I only discovered The Company of Wolves fairly recently, but was really surprised by it. Great performances surrounded by some creepy practical effects. Really worth checking out.

Didn't see it listed above and I know it's super cheesy, but I have a soft spot for the new wave punk werewolves of Howling 2: Your Sister Is A Werewolf

Going with everyone else and saying Van Helsing easily. They fucking tear off their human skin when transforming! Not to mention they look exactly how I would imagine a werewolf to look: big and agile.

I don't know how I feel about Harry Potter's werewolf. It looks more "realistic" but so frail and creepy.

I really wish Van Helsing was better than it was. It got so much right, nailed the look of everything, but it just got buried under too much mess, pacing, and tone problems.

It's a film that I look at and go "we should try that again". The werewolves were definite highlights; just like speeding whirlwinds of teeth and claws.

My favorite is definitely American Werewolf in London. Also one of my top ten horror films (maybe top 20 overall). Such a great movie.

I'm glad to see others in agreement!!!

Edit: Rethinking, I'd have to say this is actually in my top 5 horror. I'll watch it tonight, I rewatched it back in January for the millionth time. Never gets old.

Put me down for American Werewolf in London (such a great movie) and Ginger Snaps, but man! This reminded me I've never seen Dog Soldiers and I always meant to.

Yeah, American Werewolf in London and Dog Soldiers have already been named, so not much else to say. I can't think of any CGI Werewolves that are up there with the best of practical ones. Not that they won't be some day. Tech just needs to mature a bit more to make all the hair and animations seem more lifelike.

This.

They're still making that sequel, right?

Not yet. Taika Waititi has been tapped for Thor: Ragnarok. Hopefully some day though. Movie was hilarious.

I have always really liked the Lycans from the Underworld series.
I like how they make the torsos look on their werewolves. Puffed out chest and rib cage, really thin stomach and hip area.

I also kinda like the look of the werewolves in the tv show Bitten. They are B-level for sure, but still impressive.

I'm pretty sure it's getting a remake/reboot. Not the same director or anything, but maybe they'll take queues from the Jackman one.

Like you, I'm a huge werewolf nerd. When it comes to the look of the more humanoid werewolves, I like the Dog Soldiers monsters. They'd be better with a bit more fur on the body that wasn't werewolf pubes.

The werewolves in Gladiators vs. Werewolves look really cool, too. Get rid of that armor, though. Can't say the same about the movie, though.

Personally, though, I prefer the real wolf werewolves. I'm really into the transformation scenes. My current favorite are the transformations in Hemlock Grove. Great show, great wolves. It's also one of the forms of media that show a transformation from wolf back to human.

in this thread, i learned that there are people who liked American Werewolf in Paris.

/mindblown.

I'd go with American Werewolf in London, the original Howling, and the Werewolf tv show from the 90s, myself.

Loves the Greater Toronto Area
Favorite: American Werewolf in London and 2010 Wolf Man

Least favorite: The Howling
Came to post those as my favorites.

Can't even count how many times I've seen American Werwwolf in London. Amazing for a 30+ year movie.

Van Helsing is a guilty pleasure for me, and the werewolves in that are great. They're kind of like the Hulk of werewolves, just big massive freight trains of claws and teeth

Right there with you. Van Helsing is one of those movies that I get every criticism about it but just kind of loved what it was going for.
