The Black Culture Thread |OT14| Ruthless: The So Well Spoken Story

Looks great, I can't help but think that a lot of these photos are going to be awkward in hindsight if they end up with other people.

That's the nature of shipping, most of us ain't gonna pay attention to what's canon anyways... Though we will likely be pissed.

That particular couple is married with a baby.

They're actually not married (yet... their wedding date is next month), and the baby-8 isn't quite theirs yet.... They're trying to adopt her.

I don't understand why people are so anxious for more NX/Nintendo rumors after the controller threads.
Yeah I'm cool on most rumors for a while, but Emily has put some good stuff out there so I'm not trippen on her news. I was moreso just talking on how there's gaffers mad about female link.

Where you live - Detroit
What is your age? - 24
Your cultural heritage, lineage and genealogy - African American, with Puerto Rican in half of my dad’s side
Do you know your roots - No farther than my grand parents. Sorry LeVar Burton.
Favorite musical genre - Hip hop.
Your profession/major/career interest - Linguistics, and also IT.
Your religious affiliation - Christian
Hobbies - Games, photography, beer making
KFC, Popeye's, Churches, or Bojangles? - We don’t have Bojangles up here, so Popeye’s wins by default, though I like our local places much better.

Really glad we have this thread. This is my first time venturing out of Gaming-Discussion after being on GAF for years( a lurking for a decade at least), and I guess I assumed there were no black people on GAF, as this is still a part of that old 90s/00s face-less Internet. Why I assumed so is probably a deep subject in itself, but I am glad we have this.

Sup everybody?

I've been watching Hunter X Hunter and this narrator is killing me. It feels like he's been the only person talking for five episodes straight.

That Zelda thread man. It's going to go bad soon and when it does...gloriousness

I am honestly surprised at Gaming Side on this one. I didn't think they were willing to go apeshit over Link.

I don't understand why people are so anxious for more NX/Nintendo rumors after the controller threads.

Anticipation of Nintendo hardware news has always been another kind of hype. On some level, for a lot of people, Nintendo is still the toy we grew up with and on that level it's still exciting to see what they've got coming next. Same thing with rumors/news about Zelda games.

Aye, welcome new blood. Know we got your back in here unless you say some fuck shit, then you're on your own.

Yeah I'm cool on most rumors for a while, but Emily has put some good stuff out there so I'm not trippen on her news. I was moreso just talking on how there's gaffers mad about female link.

Fuck that, my bitch needs to be treated with the utmost respect. 30 years waiting for the spotlight and here's her chance to shine. She could go all ninja mode on suckas, snapping necks and shit and then turn around and rob ya ass pirate style. That shit would be mad dope.

Am I really a terrible person if I don't think a female Link is the best idea (though I'd still buy that game since I assume it would be great)? Like I think there are a lot of people who are opposed to it just on sexist grounds. However I think there are legit reasons for pause. Like I think to myself - "If Nintendo decided to make a Black Link in an aim to be progressive, how would I feel?". The honest answer to that? At least put-off with the possibility of being offended. I would think it were somewhat cheap and lazy. I don't think a gender toggle is the end times but I think its the least appealing option for the sake of representation because:
  • I've never viewed Link as an avatar and I'd rather the series move away from that sort interpretation. Even a just straight up female Link is better than a toggle in that regard.
  • I don't like race/gender/whatever swapping when the option is there for making new characters or promoting ones that deserve a promotion. I much prefer, for example, the stuff Marvel has done when it wanted canonical female characters who took over or adopted the mantles of already establish male characters.
  • Link is a different character in each game.......that looks the same and acts nearly the same in each game (though certain games add their own personality flairs). It's a weird situation but its not surprising that many people see or treat Link as one character since so many aspects of him have been consistent over 30 years.
  • The "title" of Hero (of Time) and Link aren't one and the same. There is no reason to treat them as such.
There's actually non-zero nuance in this conversation. Is it hard to treat the conversation as such.

I mean, a major pitfall of the "Link is already an established character" argument is that it goes against virtually everything the devs have ever said regarding establishing Link. He's not a character that doubles as an avatar, he's an avatar who has a character. Part of the problem is also that the "I've never seen Link as an avatar" argument goes against just about every other argument most of these people have made in the past regarding "censorship" and "artist's creative vision" regarding devs and what should and shouldn't be put in games, etc.

These Nintendo leakers may as well be us discussing permabans IMO. Nothing wrong with being a little skeptical until you see someone with a red name cosigning it.
Nah Emily is good peoples. If she says something I'm not really that skeptical.

A) What an author intends and what a consumer sees aren't always the same. When I play Zelda games, Link isn't me, he's just some pastey white elf. My personal preference is that they take the few opportunities they've used to give a Link a real personality and expand on that. Give him some VA too, I wouldn't mind.

B) I'm not the one making those sorts of arguments about "artistic vision" and I would think a non-insignificant number of people who are "meh" on female Link aren't as well.

i feel like this is your dedicated tuesday hustle.

Nah, but "I've heard" of people finessing up and coming producers out of their publishing as said producer is high and in need of some "botanicals". $5000 and a lot of "botanicals" should do the trick, allegedly.

Sup everybody?

You don't fuck with Churches? Why did you assume that black people are not on GAF? What are your thoughts on the upcoming Noisey doc on Detroit?

Am I the only person expecting a "conversation" between Noisey staff and someone named T**** T**** should this documentary come across as the urban safari shit that was the Migos documentary?

What are your hustles and goals in life?

Your allowed to have your own opinions on the matter but the main crux of the issue is that Miyamoto himself has stated that Link is the avatar for the player. Over the span of the last 25 years of the series existence, Link has picked up certain character traits and somewhat of a defined look among drastically changing art styles but that doesn't dismiss the character from being an avatar. Link has always just been the vehicle for the player to save Hyrule in. A character like Samus has a defined backstory but Link has character traits. His origins change game by game. None of Links traits are specific to males. A female Link could still: don the green tunic, take on a great evil force, be heroic, pick up the Master Sword, terrorize chickens and break into peoples homes to ruin their pottery. I don't think giving the player a choice really changes anything about Link or TLOZ lore in the long run.

Noisey Atlanta was hilarious, I swear I could hear Play It For The Jury the entire time I was watching it.
