Zelda Wii U - Recap of 5 hours gameplay stream

Enduin

No bald cap? Lies!
Has there been any info about respawning trees? I believe I read that trees respawn after you die, but what about distance or time?

They would have to respawn after some distance I would think. I doubt they would waste memory keeping that kind of data after you've traveled a certain distance. As well I would assume if you pass time at a camp fire things will reset, don't know about natural time progression.

I don't have a video handy for parrying melee weapons but here's Link parrying a laser.

This video is great btw, it has a few more gif-worthy moments of things not shown off in the Treehouse stream.
Oh nice, this is the best player I've seen with the game. The more I see of direct feed from the game, the more I'm understanding the decision to do away with an overworked theme. I'm still torn about it, but I don't hate the idea like I used to.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
I hope there are still a few traditional items separate from the weapons that you find in chests throughout the world. Stuff like the Boomerang, Hookshot, Hammer, Whip, Iron Boots, Hover Boots, Ball and Chain, etc. They could be unbreakable weapons that you upgrade with points earned from completing shrines. It would be cool to upgrade from the Boomerang to the Magic Boomerang, or from the Hammer to the Skull Hammer, or the Hookshot to the Double Hookshot.

We know that the Fire Rod exists (although you can break it if you're being careless), so there's a good chance that there are other items which go beyond your sword/spear/axe/club/bow.

Think there might be gestures in the final build? For taunts or
PVP action
? I know I'm dreaming.

I really hope gestures are in.

Hmmm... I figured. But this can both be a hindrance and a blessing depending on the parameters, I guess. For example, that one player who tried stacking boulders only to find the first one he placed has disappeared. I imaging they couldn't have traveled very far for that to happen and yet, still be surprised by it. Having close-proximity spawn distances would help for messing up puzzles that require precise placement, though, like log bridges.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see considering how far the release version is from now.

Thanks :)

l think the permanent items are probably going to be replaced with runes. Some runes could have similar functions though, l could easily see a sort of magical hookshot working on every surface allowing you to freely move around like Spiderman.

It actually happened on the Treehouse stream. They dropped a block in a lake to reach the fake excalibur or something, walked away some distance to find another--not terribly far, as I recall--and the one in the lake had disappeared.

When a sledgehammer to the face doesn't work, then maybe using the Korok Leaf to send your opponents off a cliff will...

EDIT: Lemme make this smaller one sec...

I just love being able to say "fuck it" and throw a sledge hammer directly into someone's face

The description of the hammer says it's good for mining ore (and it is; the ore breaks way faster), so I've been wondering if it would be super effective against Steppe Talus. We've only seen people fight it with blades.

Throwing weapons at enemies does extra damage, right?

It does a crit worth 2x damage. This also happens when your weapon breaks.

Is it me or did like get a lot more... badass?

Chucking sledgehammers in people's faces, burning shit, drop kicking the decapitated heads of his enemies off've cliffs... Shit!

I love how the game just mysteriously starts with Link waking up, getting on some clothes, and heading towards adventure. No tutorial, barely an introduction cutscene. It's such a refreshing take. It's like an NES game. Like how in II you start the game with Zelda sleep and and you have to wonder how in the hell that happened, and you slowly find out just by playing the game. I love that. I read an interview with Aonuma that said they want the story to be organic in terms of flow and the player themselves have to seek it out. That's such a Japanese old school game thing and I fucking LOVE it.

Everything about this game and the fact something like it exists in modern gaming from a major studio blows my fucking mind.

I'd love if this was justified in-universe by this being a battle-hardened Link (which the waking up from a cyro-chamber thing certainly implies)

Yeah, the player who made that video was kinda badass.

I really do love how fluid the combat looks in this game. I don't know if it's because of the physics engine or what, but I can tell it's going to play really well. Wonderful stuff.

I could see that being the case, although that would be a bit disappointing.

Anyone else think Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword's logos should have been swapped?

You'd think SS would prominently feature the Master Sword and BotW would show the earthy Hylian crest.

Is that just me? Not that I'm losing sleep over it, I love both logos - especially BotW's color scheme.

Any chance the demo will be made available for download? That would be cool.

With the current state of Wii U hacking, I don't think it will happen :/

I mean people can data-mine for spoilers, memory edit which can break the game (invincibility, etc) and a lot more stuff...

I think that might break the game, what if I just go through it by throwing weapons?

I expect the hookshot to latch onto every climbable surface. Would be so good! I hope it's extra long, maybe again with a dual wielding iteration.

Say, what happens after a game-over?

Any sighting of a special sheathing animation?

The sheer wonder encapsulated in these gifs is incredible. Unlike anything I've seen in a game in a very long time. Some people have commented on how Nintendo captures that child-like glee we all had for games way back when, but I think this goes beyond that.

They're innovating. It's open world sure, you can take a glance and see that it's Zelda, and physics engines of this nature have been around since the likes of HL2 way back in 2004. BUT, BotW seems to be doing things with all of the above that we've often imagined, but never seen realised.

Trust Nintendo to pull this off on the least powerful console available.
