Soothsayer
He's not a Stalfos, though. He's a shade; it's completely different, even if they share design similarities.

OoT Link lived his life, died, but had regrets that he couldn't pass on his knowledge. So he became the Hero's Shade to fulfill that longing.

And now he has a chance to fulfill that longing again as the old man training Link in the new game :)

Yeah I agree with pretty much all of this. It would be a very odd choice to single out that one game, especially since we keep hearing so much about how this was inspired heavily by the original Legend of Zelda.

I guess the Twilight Realm was essentially retconned into existence by TP since it wasn't "important" to the story previously. The Great Bridge of Hylia is a bridge which literally crosses Lake Hylia, a lake which is present in OoT, with no "great bridge" to be found. Could they have renamed another lake Lake Hylia, or could they have handwaved that tiny rope bridge in OoT into a huge stone bridge? Sure, but that's kind of exactly my point:

Zelda games very rarely follow each other in a direct and obvious manner. MM and Zelda 1+2 are the obvious exceptions (I guess WW>PH>ST too) but the way that they have introduced this game and this world, talking about breaking with conventions, talking about recreating that experience of Zelda 1, I really don't get the impression that they're trying to tie this game directly to a prequel. I'm sure there will be some subtle hints but I really really doubt this game is about the exact same Link that was defeated* in OoT.

*And I still can't get past this- Nintendo will not give an in depth backstory to this game which consists of "Hey remember Ocarina of Time, that game you all loved and played? Well this Link actually was defeated in that game. Oh, I know you weren't defeated when you played but this Link was, trust us."

It works decently enough as a very vague point in a book, but to actually base an entire backstory on that event which we've all seen doesn't happen in the playthroughs we're familiar with just seems very odd and confusing to me.

I thought I could agree to disagree but I can't. I think Link failing in OoT is as dumb as you think it is but it had to happen. OoT was supposed to be a prequel to aLttP but the way the game ends completely retcons every game made before it. They didn't want that so they came up with the only event that would keep from doing that, a reality in which the Hero of Time is defeated. The fallen timeline still doesn't make a whole lot of sense because there is no information about how and why Link failed and the imprisoning war. That is a huge problem when you want your timeline to be taken seriously. Even if BotW doesn't take place post-OoT on the decline timeline (despite the majority of the evidence pointing that way) there eventually has to be closure on that ending of OoT. There aren't many satisfying ways to do that but the theory of the Link who failed to defeat Ganon getting a chance to right his wrong is one of them.

I dunno, it doesn't have to line up perfect for it to be a nod to earlier games.
It doesn't have to line up perfect but the BotW image is from the Great Plateau and the OoT image is from Hyrule Castle so unless there is some major fuckery going on and random rooms from inside the castle shot out onto the plateau, it isn't the same place.

I mean, you're probably right, but I don't think we have anywhere near enough information to rule it out. In the meantime it's a cool thing to speculate about.

There's no need to explain the Downfall timeline. We know all we need to. Link failed. There doesn't need to be any redemption or closure. Let alone an explanation and a whole game of events about it. Trying to right the wrongs of the timeline is a fools errand. It's supposed to be a general road map of events not a detailed accounting of world history.

Some stuff just happens and should be left alone. The Downfall timeline is the only way they could fit the older games into the post OoT world and make some kind of sense. It does no one any good to try and fix every little problem. These are games about legends. Not all legends end well and not all legends make sense. And that's OK.

Also the Great Plateau was Hyrule Castle and Town most likely, but that window area is just a nod to the old castle, as it was totally destroyed in OoT so it can't be from there plus other evidence ruling it out. The Hyrule Castle we see should be a whole new Castle not the old one, unless they really don't give a damn about accuracy, which would begs the question why even bother trying to fix the timeline or fill in the gaps if this were about the Link who failed.

For anyone who cares :) here's my "Great Plateau Theme" (Forest Version).

I really tried hard to make something that would work while wandering around the Great Plateau, but of course the land is so diverse, so this is just a version that hopefully syncs in well with gameplay in the Forest of Spirits. I'm going to try and make the same theme but match it to the other areas too (plains, dry brush, mountain, enemy approach, and nighttime, maybe others).

Here's the other Main Theme I did last week, and its Peaceful Version.

I still think the 3rd timeline is the most magical bullshit that Nintendo has ever come up with, lol.

No one thought at the time of such a possibility, but they did it. And you know what? It might be for the sole purpose of telling the story in this game. At the time it was singular v. split timelines, but Hyrule Historia came out and was like 'surprise! there's 3!'

I've seen posters here suggest that perhaps you restore/resurrect the towns and buildings in this game. At first I wasn't keen on the idea. However, I'm not particularly sure how else they would be "hiding" the towns. I wouldn't mind an underground city but that'd only be a novelty for one city not for every town. Also looking back at demo footage the ruins seem a little suspicious. The top of the towers somewhat resemble the Sheikah stones in OoT. Since they somehow have the power to resurrect Link through their technology. They could have used the Sheikah stones to in some way preserve the towns and certain other areas. When you activate the towers it could restore ruins or crumbled infrastructure back to its original state with the people that lived there also returning.

Nintendo had confirmed for many years that there was a split timeline. The main argument was whether the classic Zeldas fell after TP or after WW. Not too mention the Capcom games. I still to this day don't understand why they didn't just put the classic Zelda titles after TP as it seemed to fit close enough to go TP-FSA-ALTTP. The only thing I could think of is if they really wanted to tell this story. Given OoT Zelda's actions lead to the split Child and Adult Link timelines, it's possible she does something to alter time and create another split after Link fails to try and save Link/Hyrule. They could find some vague explanation like that.

Even though Link may not be female do people think they may offer a playable female ally? The young developers seem open to wanting to play as other female Zelda characters. Perhaps in this game you encounter a female character such as Linkle, Sheik/Zelda, Impa, Midna, Ilia, etc. The female character could still carry all the same weapons and have all the same basic capabilities. However, slightly different stats and different animations. If you get tired of playing as Link you can switch to playing as the other character.

Like in Dark Cloud?

I was thinking more like the timeshift stones in SS except permanent. You activate a couple towers and then after you reach the top and get access to the region map you activate something that returns the town area back to its original state. However, perhaps they took some influence from dark cloud and the prizes we get from completing the shrine restores a building in the world.

I was actually thinking that they won't be permanent and you'll be able to turn a Timeshift Tower on or off (probably with the Sheikah Slate) once you complete the dungeon tied to it. After all, if the one near Hyrule Castle restores the castle and the town from the past then you'd need to turn it off to face Calamity Ganon in the ruined future. Anyway, it's all speculation.

Did he just pointed out the black areas ?!!

Edit: ofc, take as a grain of salt like its explained below by others.

I wonder if you have to practically go to the black area to reveal it, of do you need a certain item, or a map piece to view it.

I don't think the architectural resemblance there is strong enough. I think there's a lot of reaching going on, here. We get window features like this in practically every medieval fantasy game.

I'm not sure anyone is saying that this ruin is definitely the room where Link and Zelda met... but I think there's enough similarity to say that it is certainly a deliberate allusion. Nintendo tends to know what they're doing in cases like these.

Those black areas are probably map boundaries, like you said.
Thought, they're kinda big, lol

Yup. This size already satisfied me. I don't need a map bigger than Xenoblade Chronicles X lol

I wouldn't count on it. It kind of seems like Reggie doesn't really know that much about the finer details of the game tbh.

Yeah, i remember he even said the game has no dungeon in another interview.

If the map extended to the black area the are at E3 would be nowhere near 1% of the entire game. 1% of a map is 1/10 of the height and 1/10 of the width of the entire map, which seems about right for the plateau.

It's expected but Reggie did also said that the Amiibos of this Zelda will have some features like the Wolf Link amiibo.
I'm curious what they will have specialy the guardian amiibo *_*

Reggie's good at fancy PR talking, but I've never seen him physically interact with a game in any way that made me feel like it wasn't his first time seeing it.

Him pointing at the wrong area of the map is not at all shocking.

I'm kinda not used seeing Reggie show casing games, so thanks for the infos :D

The screenshot comparing the Ocarina of Time location may or may not be the implied location. I think there's a little bit of weight to it because there's a treasure chest there, but who knows. I agree that trying to map locations 1:1 isn't the best way to approach it though. We've seen in past games where structures and locations shift around as necessary, in a lot of the older games some areas are basically non existent.

I wouldn't count on it. It kind of seems like Reggie doesn't really know that much about the finer details of the game tbh.

I'll have to do some digging but I thought that there was one video where Bill puts a waypoint outside the map area and in the black but it was kinda close to the edge.

That would be great if you could find that video. Really interesting!

Maybe it's in the "Beyond the Plateau" video?

Reggie might be right though. Don't you think it's weird there's so much black there? Why wouldn't they use those space? Don't you think it's also weird that you can't see some of the borders of some of those areas that are at the edges of the current map? They are cutoff.

You're right but in the other hand, the map screen scrolls pretty far to the right, if there was a boundary here, why not clearly indicating it? Looks like 25% of the screen to the right is black, so I don't think it's a waste.

Edit: Beaten.

Man, would I get hot and bothered if the other locations on the map are Holodrum and Labrynna complete with portals leading to Subrosia.

As much as we're expecting many content already, let's not forget that Nintendo is into DLC all the way now.
So, yeah, I totally expects DLC at some point (in 2018).

Don't get your hopes up about the black areas. It wouldn't surprise me that they made it so that when placing markers, etc, on the outskirts, you can do so in the relative center of the screen.

Zelda doesn't have a timeline, guys. They threw something together but it's BS. It's like a reimagining every single game. No continuity whatsoever.
