American Truck Simulator |OT| Freedom gives me a Semi with a Heavy Load

When you're coming into Arizona, you'll notice next to the Arizona welcome sign is an Arizona Centennial sign.
D2B48B814FE7900DE3B3E95613DC340A462A80DA

Yes, those are accurate, and yes, those are still up 4 years after the centennial. I see one going down into Phoenix. Speaking of Phoenix, the city is divided into quadrants, and you could practically name them.

Northwest: Glendale
Southwest: Tolleson (or maybe Avondale)
Southeast: Tempe
Northeast: Scottsdale.

EDIT: I should also mention that they've also added a route connecting San Rafael to Eureka, California, which also includes the town of Ukiah.

Man I hate going through California so much with the 55MPH enforcement, you can pay me top dollar and I'm still gonna decline :p

New blog post today about the SKRS realistic Eaton Fuller Shifter knob that was successfully funded on Kickstarter a while back. It is pretty expensive for just a shifting knob, but I received mine today and it really took the manual shifting to the next level. Went from being sort of a hassle to feeling as the most natural thing in the world.

Now I just need to turn off that synchronizer to transcend to the next level of trucking.

Man, the low player count, hopefully they keep working on it, but it doesn't give much incentive for new states. But I guess it comes with the territory when there isn't a ton of content for the game. Did ETS2 start off like this? I skipped that game.

Also, seems people are working on Mexico mods.

Having the Tijuana road sign in the game though gives me hope for an official Baja California DLC.

The biggest problem with ATS is that it released very light on content compared to how incredibly fleshed out ETS2 is right now. A lot of ETS2 diehards also bought ATS and the low price point helped it sell very well, but the low content means that a lot of people played it out pretty quickly. I enjoy playing ATS more than ETS2 but at the moment I’ve taken a break from ATS because it simply needs more states, and more trucks, and more accessories, etc. And it’s taking far longer for that to happen than anyone had anticipated, thus the low player counts and people just waiting for new content to be added to keep playing.

Dope! Going to try the new map out tonight.

I feel kind of guilty for not playing this game more often.

Guys, how do you guys work with the gears in this game? What's the best way to deal with them with a G27? I mean, there are six gears on the shifter that comes with the wheel, but these trucks have much more than that, right? How does it work? Or shoul I avoud using the manual shifter?

The game allows you to decide how advanced you want to make this. There are a number of settings found at the bottom of the gameplay settings.

If you want to play with a realistic manual gearbox, you need to bind the keys called "shifter toggle 1" and "shifter toggle 2" to some keys that are easily reachable. These will toggle what is called range and split. Range toggles between your lower series of gears (typically R-L-1-2-3-4) and high (R-5-6-7-8), while split toggles between the low and high versions of these. On a 18 speed gearbox they are in these positions on your shifter:

If you don't want to be quite that hard core, you may also set your gear box setting to just "range" or just "splitter" and use a 10-speed. This will require you only to toggle between the lower gears and the higher gears using a single button. Since you can usually skip gears, using the splitter toggle in one position allows you to just shift through the odd or even gears and you will do fine most of the time.

You can also just use the Allison 6 speed and drive it like you would a normal car, but if you want to stay somewhat realistic, this is a fully automatic gear box and is meant to be used with the "realistic automatic" setting where it will behave quite differently from the other manual gearboxes in the game.

^ also the allison has a torque converter, so you don't have to put on and disengage the brakes/park brake if you start moving on a upwards incline. If you want to use a manual I'd go for the 13 speed as the 10 speed caps out at about 55 MPH for driving efficiently

I wish this game would come to consoles :"(

They have talked about it in the past, but they said that if they decided to do so, they would most likely have to outsource it.
.... Why though? I'm confused. Like, I mean, they're game developers right? What else are they gonna do? It's a business, and at the end of they day, the goal is to make as much revenue as possible to keep the doors open and put food on people's tables. Why wouldn't getting their games to the largest audience be a top priority?

The target audience for simulator games are not on consoles.

They are already a small company struggling to make content fast enough for what is arguably the biggest platform they could be on. Porting over a custom engine to an ecosystem they have no experience developing for is a major undertaking.

I really hope they do some northern areas with snow in the future. Colorado/MN/Dakota, etc.

We got plenty of deserty/humid areas now we just need some good snowy areas and things.

Maybe eventually work in a seasonal system , that'd be amazing.

Sweet! I’m hoping to do some driving tonight!

They plan to work up the west coast eventually into Oregon and Washington and then along British Columbia and into Alaska too, adding lots of terrain variety. Of course, this is the LONG term plan and it won’t happen quickly at all. But eventually.

You could also just run with an automatic transmission. Takes out a bit of the simulator aspect but allows you to relax a bit more when you approach lights and turns.

That's how I play currently, with an X360 pad. But I was thinking about going manual now that I got a wheel. I'll surely do some tests. :3

You can ease into it. There is no need to go straight for Eaton Fuller 18 with advanced shifting. I drove with automatic for quite a while, even though I had a wheel, before I switched. And doing the full range/split set up can be a hassle because the buttons you need to toggle between everything will never be as simple as those that real truckers use because those are situated directly on the shifter knob.

Which is why I spent a stupid amount of money on the SKRS mod recently. It's basically a real Eaton Fuller shifter knob with those buttons modified for use with a G27 and other popular wheels.

I kinda wish there would be more achievements & you could view them in-game. Such small things but they add a lot of more interesting goals to take on.

I wish they would label the sleeping areas better in the game world, maybe with the floating points like everything else? I've wasted a few ingame hours looking for a spot to sleep that I'm sure isn't even there.

They're marked well enough on the map as it is. I've never had a problem finding them. Now, will I make in time before falling asleep at the wheel is another story....

Well I'm sitting at the exact spot on the map where the icon is and it never prompted me. They're also tiny, so maybe I'm an inch too far.

I really haven't played since release so I'm hoping they fixed some stuff. The game was not very responsive and it wouldn't register key inputs or mouse direction very well. Maybe it was just me, but I stopped playing because it was just too frustrating. Anyone else have this issue and has it been fixed?

Yeah, I think thats just the game being flakey. More often than not I'll pull in no problem, then some spots, for whatever reason I'll have to spend a min or two inching forward or back trying to get it to trigger.
Dont recall it being an issue in ETS though

ETA: and its only a issue with rest stops.

Only found out about this late last night, visiting the thread on a whim!

I'm happy for new territory, and I'm happy to see rumbling now works on my Xbone controller -- that stuff's great for not running off the highway. It's always funny to return from ETS and see how "fast" ATS feels for long distance drives, since the scale of the map feels much smaller.

Yeah I noticed the rumbling in my DS4 as well, pretty neat.

The new state looked pretty sweet, unfortunately most of my driving was at night haha. Should get some more time with it in the upcoming weekend.

New update on ATS development, SCS is rescaling the map.

Having said all that, perhaps the greatest number of complaints from the players of American Truck Simulator have been related to the scale of the map. Your comments are incredibly important to us, and we listen to as many as we can. As such, we had been pondering internally how to meet your feedback for several months while we finished work on the Arizona DLC, and now we have made up our mind: we are, as a free future update, going to increase the scale of the game world of American Truck Simulator. This update will have many clear benefits for you, such as:

  • Upping the map scale from 1:35 to 1:20, meaning 75% longer roads outside the cities
  • Retouching the existing system of roads and intersections and revisiting the placement of cities and crossroads
  • Focusing on a better sense of scale and distance, more space for large vistas
  • Adjusting the timescale - meaning a slower day/night cycle and longer intervals between when the driver needs to rest and refuel
  • Revamping problematic junctions - no more Interstate intersections!
  • Revamping the driver experience system to more closely mirror ETS2's system
  • More room for densely populated areas in future map expansions

ats_rescale_comparsion.jpg

That's a huge work, i guess we'll have to wait even longer for other states.

This is huge news, and also fantastic news. The more I have played ATS, the more I have thought scale to be the biggest drawback. The 1:19 scale of ETS2 was just so much more satisfying, and I felt like I was driving in miniature America whenever I played ATS.

No doubt that the drawback is an even longer wait for new states, but I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks by a huge margin.

I actually enjoy the current map because of the length of some trips. I don't have much time to play so I mostly choose trips that are 30 minutes or so. However, I'm looking forward to the new scale. I'll still be able to pick smaller trips.

I'm surprised they're going back and making these changes already. I figured they'd incorporate the feedback into future states and eventually fix the launch ones. Either way, great news even if it means a longer wait for new states.

Great news! As a California resident, a lot of the drives felt way too short for being one of the largest states in the country, and had me worried how things would feel when they eventually get to the smaller states.

Anyone know what the scale was in ETS2 for comparison's sake?

1:19 as mentioned earlier on this page.

Anyway, great news for the game. Love it as it is so this makes me happier!

I have to say the dedication of the devs in regards to fan feedback is nothing short of incredible. I can't believe they're going to rescale the entire map, let alone all the intersections and everything.

Amazing.

Ahh, I missed that. Thanks!

Yeah, reading the blog they say "The new scale is equivalent to that of Euro Truck Simulator 2, so the flow of time in both games will be the same."

So i guess it's 1:20 then. I've always been under the impression it's 1:19 for ETS2 tho.
